Custom wheels: what is best width and offset for perfect square setup on X?

Hey, fellow Xers.

I'm going to be ordering a forged wheel set and was wondering what would be the best offset and wheel width for a 21" diameter or 22" diameter wheel size to get a perfect square setup that allows for 4-corner wheel rotation.

Thanks very much.

I've been wondering this too. This is my first X, and would prefer to go square if there's no detrimental effects on the suspension dynamics. I was thinking of going 20x9.5 squared wrapped in 265/45. What effect would this have overall?

Two sets of oem front wheels?
My winter setup is a square 20”, I think my wheels are 8.5” but could have gone wider, tires are 265/45/20
Rest of the year I’m on stock staggered 22s but I don’t think there’s any fitment issue using fronts all around.
Does a square setup like this throw off the speedometer/odometer? I’m guessing putting OEM front wheels on the rear might affect this.

No, that just depends on making sure the overall diameter with the tires is the same. Width and offset have no impact on speedometer/odometer.
True, but on my 2023 X the front tire is 265/45R20 and the rear is 275/45R20 which comes out to 29.4” vs 29.7” and 687 rev/mile vs 678 rev/mile. Is that a large enough difference to be noticeable?

Ah, I see what you mean.

Plugging in those numbers into a tire calculator, that’s only 1% difference.
I’m actually not sure where Tesla reads the rotations for speedometer/odometer. Good question.

Did anyone figure out which size tire in a square setup, results in no speedo change?

In other words, is speed determined by the rear tire size or the front?

I'm doing my research for winter tires and have a couple of (20") sizes in mind.

I switch from staggered OEM 22” to square 265/45/20 for winter and don’t notice any change on the speedo but haven’t done a measured mile.
I went with that tire size due to many posts on here recommending it., and it has worked fine for 3 winters.

265/45 R20 is my first choice for a square 9" setup, but also exploring 245/50 R20's, but haven't explored the load rating, tire availability, etc. I just know they're the same diameter as 275's. I haven't even researched what winter tire I want. Had good luck with X-Ice on my '18 LR3 and '22 PY, both square.

Considering my 20" setup (20x9.5 +40 / 20x10.5 +40) with 15mm spacers (F/R) and OEM sized tires (265/45 & 275/45) as shown in attached.....

Ideal custom wheel order STAGGERED would be 20x9.5 +25 (Front) & 20x10.5 +25. ✅

So IMO for a square setup I would run 9.5" wide (20" or 21" or 22" doesn't matter) Front +25 offset and Rear 9.5 +0 offset since the 1" difference in width in the rear vs. what I'm currently running is about 25mm. 1/2" is about 13mm.

Wheel Example: 20x9.5 +25 (Front) 20x9.5 +0 (Rear)

Square 10" setup you would just need to play with the numbers and confirm fitment clearance especially in the front which I can't confirm.

In theory wheel example: 20x10 +38 (Front) and 20x10 +12 (Rear)

Appropriate tire sizing for the square setups are unknown to me... 🤷‍♂️
