The reason this problem happens is the code is not clear enough IMO. Electrcians will tell you because there is no 55 amp breaker they can round up. They will also say that the EV charger is hard wired and will not pull more than 48 amps (less than the rated ampacity). Lastly they will say...

Per Tesla they have to be on seperate breakers. They will count as one load though for load calcs. Two options that come to mind are some tandem breakers (to make room for a second double pole breaker) or a sub panel. I have two 60 amp breakers in my setup and 60 amps of allocation so its 120...
