A slightly tangential question... This thread has great information but appears to only describe a noise as the problem, not some sort of mechanical failure. Is the problem only the noise? Or is the noise an indicator of a failure or pending failure?

There are long threads of USB drive recommendations here on this site. A simple search should get to one of them. That said, we have Samsung T7 SSD drives in our Model 3 and Model Y. They work find and reliably, even in the Arizona hot summers.
