    Autonomous Car Progress

Not all of that map is in safe areas. I wonder what the cars response would or should be if one person came off the curb to stop the car and then others robbed the occupants, they would seem to be sitting ducks trapped in a car with no where to go.

    No radar, no problem?

I would think radar or other safety control should sit above autopilot or driver to make sure neither did does something wrong and it it the one to listen to in the case of a conflict not autopilot or fsd, just like it currently can override the driver it should override autopilot or fsd

[UPDATED] 2 die in Tesla crash - NHTSA reports driver seat occupied

Harris County Constable Precinct 4 deputies said the vehicle was traveling at a high speed when it failed to negotiate a cul-de-sac turn, ran off the road and hit the tree. KPRC 2 reporter Deven Clarke spoke to one man’s brother-in-law who said he was taking the car out for a spin with his best...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

Yes the software did decide to run off the road, it went through a decision tree to choose the appropriate action to take for the current road condition. The algorithm did not give up and transfer control back to the driver or continue to go straight, it decided that veering left was the correct...

because lack of seatbelts increases injury to the driver and is not the same as the software deciding to veer off the road and injure a third party requiring constant attention to override bad decisions. And if people want to compared it cruise control your talking about a short period of time...

And the 64 thousand dollar question will be if the manufacturers will be held partially liable to ensure the driver is engaged while autopilot or driver assist type systems are active, its to soon to tell but with all the model 3 sales its only a matter of time until a third party is injured and...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

this NTSB report kinda says it all, “read the manual” and “pay attention” may not be enough to avoid lawsuits and taking measures to insure compliance may be needed From LA Times I think: “The death of Model S driver Joshua Brown in May 2016 spurred a NTSB report in September in which the...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

For the purposes of public safety I am less concerned about coverage and more concerned about assigning liability. I do not think “read the manual” and “always pay attention” will be enough to shield automakers. The amount of time before ignoring the warning and an accident could be hours...

I dont have I dont have either, just a curious observer, but was only commenting on the best driver awareness technology no matter who it is from would be seem to be preferred if you are going to insist the driver needs to be aware and make them liable. If there is technology to do this and...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

I would disagree here, unless extra sensors completely eliminates the need to pay attention (full autonomy) you would just make the problem worse by having more people lulled into a false sense of safety and your vehicle will still take an action to kill you or others. I feel the problem is that...

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

true but that is the same as distracted driving now, I cant disengage from paying attention for many minutes at a time or more. plus I think there needs to be a clean way to assign liability and if the defense is you must pay attention then whatever is the best way to determine that would seem...

why do you like hand on wheel better? I dont see how you can infer any level of paying attention ftom a hand on the wheel but it seems you could if you could monitor eyes on the road

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

the thing I like most supercruise is the “eyes on the road” monitoring since roads can change overnight due to construction, weather, etc. until we are at full autonomy keep your eyes on the road or disengage self driving!!!

Blog Tesla: Autopilot Was Activated During Fatal Model X Crash

the reality here is the tesla took an action to cause a fatality, if the drivers attention is a requirement to override this action then the GM supercruise seems a better supervisor since it monitors if you have your eyes on the road, who cares if your hands are on the steering wheel
