    Thank you @Cheffromage - I have been struggling with this, and the Tesla rep had never heard of it (amazing given this whole thread of others experiencing it) but I tried what you did and it works great now. You're awesome for posting this simple solution.

    Update on this: After my post, SmarTesla responded and sent me a new kit. The new electronic controller from it (the first thing I tried as the most likely) fixed it, without replacing anything else. It now works every time (vs. the previous behavior of not working the first time every time)...

    Yes, he confirmed the latch is right. I hope to get in on the group buy of the Tesla Offer one since I need to replace the SmarTesla defective one and they are not even responding.
