Winter Storm Nick Jonas - What if your Model S was on one of the closed roads?

Im not defending ICE-cars here, just stating some facts. My 2012 Golf 6 1.6 petrol uses (according to the trip-computer) 0.7 liters of fuel per hour at idle. Full tank capacity is 55 liters. A full tank would give me: 55/0.7=78.6 hours of idling. Half a tank: (55/2)/0.7=39.3 hours. A...

Elon Musk Interview with a Danish Newspaper 9/23

Also heard this, sounds interesting. Model 3? :)

12V Usage Info? Potentially avenue to adding a couple of miles of range?

I think it's a great idea. Also if you were to replace the lead-acid battery, a good size (lead) weight would also be saved! Every % counts.

Model X Signature Configuration has begun!

You are very much correct, I´ve never seen the forum load as slow as today...

    Cooling pump probems

Are you measuring when the pump is supposed to be enabled? Otherwise the 1 Volt could be a signal from the PCM to search for the pump being connected, and it would never enable output to the DC-motor without sensing the appropriate resistance from the Pump itself. It should be a two pole...

Transitioning home heating from carbon fuel burning to electricity

In Europe most people uses heat pumps. Using any kind of combustion of gas or oil is unheard of, at least since the 90s in Sweden anyway. Modern heat pumps work below -20 C, sure not as efficient but they are sized to deal with this and there is always an auxiliary electric heating element. In...

Why do Americans like Pickup trucks?

If you need to haul more "nasty" stuff, why can't you just use a small trailer? Why do you need a Pickup truck for that?

Why do Americans like Pickup trucks?

We don't need to mostly. New furniture is often Ikea-style, so flat packs which you can fit in the back of any Golf or Audi. If for some reason you need to haul a whole chair or something weirdly shaped, you could just call a friend who has a Volvo V70 or any other estate car. This covers 99.5%...

    top speed tuning

Maybe you could deactivate the ABS (speed-sensors) so the car dosen't know how fast it's going. If the car uses onboard GPS as backup, you could just get an GPS-jammer to block that out aswell. A little crazy, has anyone tried something like this?

Multi-gear EVs are probably the future

No gearing required. Makes more sense to drive the gearing down, thus giving the engine more top speed. This isn't an ICE, and there is more than plenty of torque available from rest. To compensate for the lost acceleration the manufacturers will just increase the engines output, cooling is a...

    EU brake light vs US

Even if you were to use an accelerometer, wouldn't you still need a controller like the Arduino? Otherwise all the logic, computing and Input/Output would have to be inside one accelerometer module? Never seen that before.

    EU brake light vs US

I guess that would work as well, and accelerometers are cheap as chips on ebay. How about downhills, would it recognize it as braking and turn the lights on? Bumps, potholes and so on, this could also trigger the lights. I believe "my" method is more in line with what Tesla actually uses, but...

    EU brake light vs US

Yes, it was just an extreme example :) Anyway come to think of it, here's how I would do it. 1. Get an Analog/Digital controller (I think an Arduino would work) 2. Obtain an Analog feed from the ABS-sensors (this indicates your speed) 3. Obtain the secondary feed from the Variable Resistance...

    EU brake light vs US

Sure it could be possible to do a DIY-retrofit, but I wouldn't like hacking into the main loom, warranties and so on... It would also most certain have to involve an accelerometer, since the throttle is electronic and you would need an on/off signal wire from somewhere. Maybe you could splice...

[updated with *] P85D 691HP should have an asterisk * next to it.. "Up to 691HP"

That means you would be averaging 130 km/h. Im not sure that is really possible to achieve (legally?). Maybe if you went through Germany, but that´s a huge detour.
