SpaceX vs. Everyone - ULA, NG, Boeing, Lockheed, etc.

As bxr140 has noted on a number of occasions, for the military, getting their payload exactly where they want it safely will have a priority over price. So if Vulcan and New Glenn prove themselves to be reliable, then they can potentially win some of the more exotic launches that the military...

    SpaceX Starship - IFT-5 - Starbase TX - Pre-Launch Preparations Thread

Keep in mind that SpaceX crashed three or four boosters into the ASDS. Those were extremely explosive and none of them damaged the ASDS to any greater extent. It's a nearly empty booster with very little momentum left.

SpaceX Starship - IFT-4 - Starbase TX - Launch Thread and Post Launch Discussion

This is not surprising. Those are just the video feeds. There are probably hundreds to thousands of data feeds. Most impressive considering this is only the second try. It was off target from the single engine out. If that happens on IFT-5 then there is no way they would try for a "catch."

Charity bet #5: First Starship Booster Intact Landing

I suppose this is an early IFT-5 pre-launch I'll take December 2024. My assumption is that the first try will fail and there will be some damage that needs to be repaired and they get it on the second try.

    SpaceX Starship - IFT-5 - Starbase TX - Pre-Launch Preparations Thread

I'm not sure that a landing failure back at the launch site would be destructive in a significant way. I'd expect it to be along the lines of the damage from the IFT-1 launch. The booster will not be going too fast and it will be almost empty of fuel. If you compare that to the incredible...

Breaking: Congress bans use of Russian rocket engine: RD-180

ULA had a stockpile of RD-180s that they've held onto for the few remaining Atlas V launches. They have enough Atlas Vs and RD-180s to fulfill all the Starliner launches. The Vulcan has not been man-rated yet. So Vulcan would have to go through the extensive process of being man-rated before...
