How much has your Model S' battery degraded?

In my experience it is just calculation issue. Frankly I have been just charging to 90% for well over a year and half now, so I am not sure if the firmware has gotten better at dealing with this. If you have done the charge to 100% then drive to near zero in a single drive then repeated another...

Article on Supercharging effect on Model S battery capacity

I found this article and it's methodology complete BS. In my case on my 60 I have about 1% or so degradation at 51K miles. My last range charge:

    19' Michelin Primacy Tire Upgrade

My car came with the Goodyear tires. I replaced them with the Michelin Primacy tires. My opinion is the Michelin tires are WAY better. Worth paying almost twice as much for them? Yes.

    Drive Units (Small)

I hope you understand the challenge you will have to get them to work. This would not be a simple undertaking. My understanding is the front drive unit won't work unless connected to the rear drive unit via CAN bus. Take a look at what Jack Rickard has been doing to get an original RWD drive...

Vampire drain a considerable cost on the long run

Anecdotal data point: my original "old style" (grey I think) 12 volt battery lasted almost 2 years. It did not fail or ever give error messages. It's just that during my second annual, knowing it hadn't been replaced yet and all the horror stories on the forum I asked them to replace it. And...

Help the wife and I decide between the 70D or the 85!

One other minor thing to mention. If you plan on keeping your car for a while, say long enough to look forward to a battery replacement or upgrade then choose a flavor of 85 or 90 equipped car. It seems that Tesla has closed the door on upgrades to 60/70 type cars. This is not for technical...

What range will 90D battery really have? how much more than 85D does $3k get you?

Agree in principal, but losing 5kwh in 50K seems a bit steep. I haven't even lost 1kwh in my 60 battery at 50K miles.

Harris Ranch is getting first battery swap station

From someone who has had the swap done on their car, a while ago. Caveat: that was with a coil equipped car. But my guess is that it doesn't make a difference. My thinking is that there are dampening and spring rate changes required. So they would have to put in new struts. Edit: Final comment...

Sounds like Ludicrous upgrade may reduce incidence of catastrophic contactor failure

I would like to see the Inconel upgraded contactors in my 60. Not for performance (obviously can't pull any more amps out of my pack), but reliability. One less thing to worry about, can't overheat them. I have yet to receive a contactor replacement yet... still have the original ol' clickity...

Harris Ranch is getting first battery swap station

Yep.. to reiterate, suspension must be modified/changed to support the added mass of the larger pack. The pack upgrade can be done, it's just not cheap. Also, you will likely have to make your Tesla service manager's life hell before he will even consider doing it. At least until Tesla...

Upgrading to a 90kwh from a 60kwh is perfectly doable. Just needs a suspension components upgrade and a whole lot of cash!

60 Owners : How much less are our cars worth today?

I can't say much about the value of the car, but it would be nice if the drive train warranty got bumped to unlimited miles like every other Tesla. In fact even if it was just the drive unit and not the battery. Mostly because of the drive unit issues. It is the same drive unit that the S85 has...

Does the 70D have new batteries and will the 85D become a 100D?

So with all the back and forth when the 70D was released about being a new chemistry or not... I was predicting it was a new chemistry.... So now that the 90kwh pack has been released and has been confirmed that it was new chemistry, does the 70 pack also contain the new chemistry (just not...

    Press Conference July 17

I would be interested to see if there are a lot of existing 85 cars opting to upgrade to 90kwh batteries, that it may create a glut of used 85kwh batteries for value buyers such as myself. Therefore I could upgrade to a gently used 85kwh battery in my 60 for a reasonable cost. My car would still...

Valet Service No Longer Free at Service Center, instead $3 per mile

Bummer. This has always been a huge convenience factor for me. One of the features I like to impress upon people when extoling the virtues of Tesla's top notch service. Seems like a downward slip to me.

    Drive unit, new or refurbishishid?

I am curious about the Rev number of the drive unit that failed too. In my case all previous drive units were Rev "A" and my latest replacement is a Rev "M".
  24. glhs272

Statistical poll of the drive unit issue

Mine did too. I think that is an indication that the pitting happens on the outer race of the bearing on the side carrying the load. That would make sense in that the current is going to flow through the path of least resistance. The least resistance would be on the side most in contact with the...

Statistical poll of the drive unit issue

Yes, but those are my words and recollection of a conversation and not in anyway documented. For the specific failure of my drive unit anyway. Said articles about this issue is just me adding color to the conversation to explain it better than I can. My judgement on Tesla's engineering may be a...

  27. glhs272

Statistical poll of the drive unit issue

Respectfully, drive units being replaced due to noise are failures. I agree there are a lot of noises that the drive unit can make, and not all of them are an indication of failure. A mature inverter will make more noise than a new one, that's normal and nothing wrong with that. Early on, Tesla...

Lake Hubert, Minnesota- Suggestions for charging?

There are a number of Chademo charging stations in the Twin Cities area. So if you have the adapter or can borrow one, that would help. I just did a road trip to Brainerd, MN and used the Chademo charger in Ramsey MN at connexus energy with no issues (see my post on Plugshare). I charged via 110...

$961 bucks to replace bushings on rear suspension upper control links?

I know, I have been following your issues with your car... not very encouraging. Not including drive unit issues, the first 50K on my car would not equal $4,000 worth or repairs. I can tolerate cosmetic issues, squeeks and rattles, and some basic wear parts. I can't tolerate major repair...

$961 bucks to replace bushings on rear suspension upper control links?

Well according to the description they are High Intensity Discharge (HID) Xeon bulbs (they also sell the non-HID halogen bulbs of which my car is not equipped, islandbay's car has them) and Xeon ballasts. That looks like a direct replacement for what I have in the car. It's one of those silly...

$961 bucks to replace bushings on rear suspension upper control links?

I think so... But I really, really, really, REALLY, don't want to have to purchase the extended warranty. $4,000 is a bit much for 50K of early life miles. The car should be in the more favorable part of the bath tub failure curve right now (design defects aside *cough* Drive unit * cough*). It...

New Noise immediately after 6,500 mile road trip, opinions?

Good to hear. Tesla service has always been top-notch for me. Aside from minor creeks and rattles, my car too is issue free as I am now rolling past 50K miles. So the warranty honeymoon period is over. A new phase of Tesla Model S ownership has begun. I am hopeful that my refurbished Rev M drive...

New Noise immediately after 6,500 mile road trip, opinions?

Minor data point... As I have gone through drive units, the Tesla part number has gone from:1025276-00-A on 5-8-2014 to 1025276-00-M on 6-22-2015. Same part number with different rev levels like the batteries have gone through? This may indicate that Tesla has been trying to get this issue...

Surpercharging difficulty for my new 70D

Like DFibRL8R says, make sure it is plugged all the way in. When I first got my car, I seemed to have similar issues. Turned out, I just wasn't doing it right. It actually takes a surprising amount of force to fully seat the connector properly. Much more than the standard UMC/HPWC plug. I...

New Noise immediately after 6,500 mile road trip, opinions?

There is definitely something in there wearing out...rotor bearings. As described to me by Tesla: induced electrical current is flowing from the rotor through the bearings to the motor housing. This will cause arcing in the bearing races, which makes them pitted over time, therefore causing a...

New Noise immediately after 6,500 mile road trip, opinions?

How many miles on this refurb drive unit? I have been getting about 25K from mine. Recently got another, although my car has had the month off while I have been away on business. This refurb unit that I just got seems... mature... Inverter is actually noisier than my prior one. No bearing noise...

    Drive Unit Replacement Poll

I would recommend a D series car if your worried about these RWD drive units. They have an completely new design drive unit. 70D and 85D anyway. Also, all cars now have 8 year unlimited mile warranties on drive units and batteries (I know, you still want to keep it longer than the warranty)...

    Drive Unit Replacement Poll

Cheap? No. $20 Bucks is cheap. But cheaper than a full replacement. If I had to guess it would take 8 to 12 hours labor to remove, repair, then reinstall. @$150 per hour that would be about $1,200 to $1,800 labor plus parts (guess $200). So I would estimate $2,000 for an out of warranty repair...

    Drive Unit Replacement Poll

So I wanted to follow up on an earlier post that I sort of miss-posted in the EU Market Situation and Outlook thread. My main point was that it appeared rear drive units were hard to come by. I got my Model S back from the Highland Park service center today. As usual, their service has been...

    SolarCity (SCTY)

I got to see a little of this first hand a few weeks ago. I was on a road trip through Minnesota with my Model S and there was a (then) available free Chademo charger in Ramsey, MN. Real World Comparison of a S85 to an 85D Efficiency

breser, Minor thought... It looks like you both left from your house. Did the S85 also leave from your house cold soaked or did ThortsMD drive to your place, top off then continue on? Just thinking that maybe the early on results were higher for your S85D because it still had to warm up, where...

    CHAdeMO charging efficiency

Huh. I wouldn't think you would see that much charging loss between the shunt on the battery and the shunt on the charger. It's just a wire between the two (more or less). That brings up an interesting question. Will charging stations be required to pass annual exams for accuracy like a gas...
