Hacking the Model S for evil...

I'm still not understanding the motivation of these alleged black hat hackers. While there are plenty of examples of black hat attacks on various devices, I have yet to see a case where murder is the intent. As a software engineer myself, I certainly want to see security done well, but I fail...

Consumer Reports - Winter chills limit range of the Tesla Model S electric car

One of the things that strikes me as odd with many of these reviews is that the journalists don't seem to have gotten the simple walk through that all of us owners got at delivery, explaining how the car works and how it differs from an ICE. I'd even venture to say that at minimum Tesla needs...

Hacking the Model S for evil...

I think it would make more sense to worry about some driver intentionally hitting your car that some anonymous hacker intentionally causing your car to crash.

How Is The Model S Build Quality Holding Up So Far?

Five weeks, ~5000km, no service visits, excellent initial quality. Some firmware issues noted by many, but nothing that requires immediate attention. Two firmware updates from the shipped version, both improvements (I was on 4.0, 4.2, and now 4.2 .42). I'm not new to early adoption, but I've...

Installing a Passport 9500ci radar detector / laser diffuser

I was wondering what the spare nosecone was for. Depending on the location and spacing of the sensors, it may be possible to mount them behind the plastic grill, but I have no idea how you'd get in there as it looks like the entire front fender assembly has to come off in order to get the grill...

    Traction Control/Swaying under Firmware v4.2 ?

For those that have experienced the swaying, have you checked your tire pressures? I have experienced a reaction like you describe, but I found that my tires were all at 39psi. I haven't been able to reproduce the same effect since bringing them all to 45 (19" winters). I suspect that the...

    Lacewood interior photos?

Do the rest of you that have Lacewood interiors actually have Lacewood that looks like the pictures at the start of this thread? Mine doesn't have the same contrast pattern, but is more muted in texture and colour. I'll try to remember to snap a pic to show the difference.

    Fogging

Personally, I can see where this issue might not have come up in testing. I'm an hour north of Toronto and have driven in plenty of snowy and cold conditions. I've only experience fogging once, quickly cured by increasing fan speed and shifting to fresh air. I did note the problem with the...

    Winter Tires

That's been my concern as well, mnox. I put 90k on my last car in just over a year, so none of the service plans appear to be of great benefit and the "annual" checkup will be pretty durn frequent, more like an ICE oil change interval. FWIW, I was offered tire storage when I picked up my car...

    Model S Software/Firmware Updates

I just got my first update from 4.0 at delivery to 4.2, which appears to have been rolled out to everyone. Quite simply, the update progress and planning for car firmware is not any business of the owner. When it comes in, you can choose to update, but asking for full transparency in their day...

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

I'm around the same and haven't had any real issues. I've noted a few things that could be improved, but the software has been solid for me and I'm a picky software developer myself.

Pressure Buffeting - Has anyone experienced it?

I agree with Doug, every newer car I've owned or driven had this issue, most of them rather badly. My older cars (87 Mercedes, 90 Range Rover, 94 Miata) don't do this. I can't speak for the Tesla yet, it is too cold for windows down operation.

    Hypothetical 60kWh Performance Option

I thought that the 85kwh battery was needed in order to supply enough power for the bigger motor and inverter on the perf model. With electric conversions, this is often an issue as you need more battery amps in short burst than you can provide without having a large number of cells, which...

Model S Brake & Accelerator Pedal Positions

I'm a heel-toe manual driver and I've never gotten the two pedal warning, even with bulky winter boots. With the S, I also rarely use the brake pedal at all, but I had to specifically try to get the warning to pop up in order to verify its existence. Perhaps this explains so many recalls from...

Anyone considered waiting and buying used?

With the reservations outpacing production, I don't know that we'll see discount priced used vehicles for a while yet. It took quite a while for the used Roadster market to become affordable and even then the most modern revisions still sell for a pretty penny. There's also the fuel savings in...

Model S floor mats in Tesla Store

Given the season, it would have made more sense to have the all season ones first. i seem to vaguely recall that some Signature owners were promised mats on their due bill. Any word on whether these are them and if one will get a choice between all season and standard?

    Winter Driving Experiences

There's truthful experience and there's scare tactic subject lines. The TM forum thread is obnoxious, especially before dealing with the issue through Tesla. There are a lot of positive winter experiences, some from the very same area and snowstorm. While there might be an issue with one car...

Can I set the charger to pull more than 40a from a NEMA 14-50?

My understanding is that 40a is the limit for continuous draw on a 50a circuit. Above 40a is ok for burst, but not long term.

I wouldn't be too worried about being pulled over in the HOV lanes as I've never seen any of the twits that cross the double lines or drive solo pulled over.

    Service requirement for home chargers

Exactly so. My home has 600A service due to being built in the 70's when hydro was dirt cheap and electric resistance baseboard heaters were common. I've been on a geothermal system for 25 years and have tons of unused capacity. Unfortunately, only 100A is wired to the garage and that...

How to make sense of VINs?

The Canadian Signature VINs started at 2000, leaving a gap from the highest US Signatures. However, there are tons of reasons why they wouldn't deliver them sequentially, such as transport time, options produced, customer delays, availability of a DS, etc. If they waited until 3000 was...

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

Most new cars now come with a gas-brake shutoff after all of the folks that were unable to drive their vehicles caused massive recalls. I don't think that this is any different than your average 2012 Toyota.

Why is turning off the alarm an option?

I've never found car alarms to be useful for much of anything. People ignore them or are annoyed by them, but they don't stop someone who knows what they are doing. I especially don't like my car honking the horn as a signal for anything. I'd much rather have the alarm response go to my phone...
