    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

I wish it were possible to put in multiple destinations in the nav system. It would certainly help it with supercharging and choosing where to charge. The nav system also needs to wait before changing the route for traffic. At one point it was changing its mind every couple of minutes when...

I will never buy 21" tires again

I have 21's and never had a problem until a couple weeks ago when I noticed a bubble in the sidewall of one of my tires. There's no sign that it hit anything there. Even though my tires (Michelin Super Sports) are under warranty (Tirerack) I had to replace two of them due to the wear. To make...

    Gapless Playback

For umlauts and other special characters I just format my USB drive as EXT4 which handles all the special characters. FAT is limited in the characters it supports in the filenames, at least as far as Linux is concerned.

Should Model S have a solar panel?

The cost will still be high. For one thing there are a lot of differences between the panoramic roof and solar. For one thing, you would need a totally different type of glass that lets through as much light as possible which means it will also let through a lot more heat. Then comes the problem...

Should Model S have a solar panel?

The Fisker solar panel also cost around $5,000 to make due to it being curved the way it is (which they also patented). It would be far more economical to use that money to install fixed panels on the home which will provide well over 260+ EV miles per year. I'm having solar installed on my...

Should Model S have a solar panel?

I have left an ICE sitting for 6 months also and ended up with a dead battery (and it was charged and desulfated monthly). I still say one would be crazy to leave any 70K car sitting in an airport parking lot under the weather for six months is idiotic. That's why there's these things called...

Should Model S have a solar panel?

Making a curved panel like that is quite expensive and I certainly would not consider the pano roof useless, especially when it increases the head room, plus it is just nice to open it on a nice day. Leaving a car at an airport for 6 months is downright dumb when it is far less expensive to take...

Should Model S have a solar panel?

The Fisker Karma has a large solar panel on the roof. I follow the forums there and for the amount of power generated and the cost of the panel it is estimated that the return on investment is around 500 years. The amount of power produced by the large panel on the roof is negligible compared to...

    Dash cam install experience

I installed a Blackvue 550 HD dash cam in my P85. The front camera was easy, especially since power is available above the rear-view mirror. The rear camera was a big pain in the butt. I ran the cable along the sill under the doors and putting the C pillar back in place was difficult. In order...

Any experience placing exterior cell phone antenna on roof?

I have a Wilson Cell phone booster. When I mentioned the problem that their magnetic antenna won't stick they sent me a painted steel plate to put on the inside of glass so the antenna can stick to the outside. I haven't actually used it with my Tesla though.

Tesla to Owners. Please Don't Pimp Your Ride.

The funny thing is that yesterday I took my car in because I was having weird issues with my rear-view mirrors not returning to the proper location after going from reverse to drive and the guy at the desk was asking me what mods I had done to the car. (It turns out that if you have the mirrors...

    Mirrors are possessed!

I now know the root cause(s). I took my car in and the fellow at the desk had seen this problem before. The previous time it took them several days to identify the problem going so far as to bring in one of the lead engineers. There is a problem if the mirror is pointed too far down in reverse...

    Mirrors are possessed!

My car started doing it again on the passenger side. I adjust the mirror position for drive and press save yet the next time I put the car into reverse then back into drive it does not use the saved position. I have tried both with and without the side mirror adjustment enabled when I hit save...

My Reus sound system install: Photos and comments

It sounds like the phone signal is getting fed back into the amp. It's actually fairly easy to fix by installing a few ferrite beads in the proper locations on the speaker wire. I haven't had this problem with my Reus system. I had a similar problem with a USB headphone DAC though.

It looks like things have settled down for now and it's working. I have had this issue a number of times as if the profile gets corrupted or something.

Why isn't there storage under the armrests?

I completely disassembled the center console. There isn't much room in there for anything due to the rear vents and the electronics (which don't take up too much space).

    Mirrors are possessed!

It seems lately that my side rear view mirrors are possessed! When I put the car into reverse the mirrors may or may not point down. Usually they do. When I put the car back into drive, however, often either the left or right mirror does not return to the proper position forcing me to manually...

    How about a DashCam option?

I put it all the way at the top to the right of the mirror. The left edge of the camera is about 3 inches to the right of the right-side of the top of the rear-view camera bracket with the left side of the camera bracket about six inches from the top of the plastic mirror bracket.

    How about a DashCam option?

I installed my BV550 right at the top to the right of my mirror so it doesn't affect the extra tweeter I have installed behind the mirror and I have no problems getting the GPS to work. My biggest problem turned out to be running the cable for the rear camera. I chose to run it down the A pillar...

Heads up: Tesla no longer manufacturing NEMA 14-30 adapter

I used my NEMA 14-30 adapter until I installed a HPWC in my garage. I upgraded the dryer outlet in my garage from a NEMA 10-30 to the 14-30. I even ended up making a NEMA 14-30 extension cord since nobody sells those.

Austin roads just destroyed two wheels

Given how bad the roads are around where I live I bought Tesla's tire and rim insurance when it was briefly available. I'm glad I haven't had to use it. *knocks on wood* I'm constantly dodging potholes in San Jose.

50 AMP Extension Cord--important to Have??

I have a 50A extension cord and have found it to be useful. At one of the places I visit the parking space where a NEMA 14-50 outlet exists the parking spot is very narrow and next to a wall, making it impossible to back in. If I park normally the UMC cable has trouble reaching the outlet so I...

DIY solution to deadening tire noise

I look forward to your results. I have the Michelin Super Sports and the road noise drives me insane with my P85. I was convinced I had a wheel bearing going out due to the vibration I get from these tires (even on fresh wet pavement!). Tesla thought something was off too until they put some...

Near annual replacement of 12V battery is typical according to Tesla Service Tech

Deciding which 21" summer tires to buy...

I have the Michelin Pilot Sport 2s on my P85 and while they handle nice and are quite grippy the road noise is quite annoying. For the longest time I thought I had a wheel bearing going out due to the grinding I could feel in the steering wheel. Tesla finally popped some 19's on and proved it...

Hum coming from rear of car

I brought the car in and they think it may be the alignment. Apparently they replaced some bolts in the suspension to adjust the camber and the new bolts tend to slip. My tires were scrubbing and there's a lot of wear on them (after only 5K miles!).

How many UMC's have you been through?

I'm also on my original UMC from 5/2013. While I was using it I was limited to 24A since I had to use a NEMA 14-30 in my garage until I installed a HPWC where I now charge at 80A. I've used it a few times at 50A on road trips. Generally I didn't have any problems though there were a few times...

Speed Assist and Lane Departure Warning

I just got a loaner today while they try and sort out the alignment on my car. The loaner has under 200 miles on it and it includes the lane departure and speed limit support. I haven't yet had a chance to try out the lane departure since traffic was rather heavy but I'll try it tonight. The...

A Tesla Hater just told me "Batteries Cause Cancer"

There is no strong evidence to support this. It is certainly far safer than the lead and sulfuric acid used in the lead acid batteries found in most cars (including the Tesla model S). See myth #4. http://www.alz.org/alzheimers_disease_myths_about_alzheimers.asp and...

Who's black Tesla is this in California?

Are you sure that somebody didn't just unplug the Tesla? Without the key fob the Tesla doesn't really indicate if it is charging or not. The glow around the plug and the screens go dark after a while. If the J1772 adapter is plugged in to the car then the car was unplugged by somebody else.

A Tesla Hater just told me "Batteries Cause Cancer"

Yes, lead acid batteries cause all sorts of problems. They tend to explode and cause fires and contain a strong caustic acid as well as a toxic heavy metal (lead). The lithium aluminum cobalt oxide batteries used by Tesla are fairly benign. Cobalt is an essential nutrient. Aluminum is not very...

Hum coming from rear of car

The noise started at high speeds but now it is at fairly low speeds as well. Additionally it feels like something is grinding and is definitely getting worse. I spoke to a friend of mine who was one of the designers of the drivetrain at Tesla. He said he knows exactly what the problem is (but...

Hum coming from rear of car

I am hearing a hum coming from the back end of my model S. The pitch does not change however it grows louder at higher speed. It also does not matter what type of road surface I drive over, but some like grooved concrete make it a lot louder. It is almost as if something is resonating. That's...

Something I didn't know I could do with a USB drive

I have come across a few flakey USB sticks in my driver development. For example, I had a lot of issues with a Sandisk Cruzer causing the driver to crash due to the Cruzer reporting that the maximum LUN was 1 when it should have been zero. In my investigation I came across a table in the Linux...

Supercharger - Truckee, CA - Donner Pass Rd. (LIVE Aug 2014, 11 V2 stalls)

It's useful for planning routes using tools like Google Maps, where I can drag the route around, add multiple destinations, etc. The Tesla Model S nav system still needs a lot of work. The nav system in my 2006 Prius is better in many ways than the Tesla one. For one thing it allowed me to enter...

    10-30 extension

Sure you can. I found everything I needed at my local Ace hardware store. I got a NEMA 14-30R plug and a NEMA 14-30R receptacle and 20 feet of 10-3 cable and wired it up. I used that for several months until I got my HPWC installed. I plugged my UMC NEMA 14-30 adapter into the receptacle without...

Supercharger - Truckee, CA - Donner Pass Rd. (LIVE Aug 2014, 11 V2 stalls)

I'm putting together my own Google Maps of the Tesla Superchargers and filled it in with the Truckee Supercharger. Hopefully I'll have it finished soon. Charging etiquette on the local news

For one thing it was an EV ONLY parking spot, not a plug-in hybrid parking spot. Second of all, when there are a limited number of charging spots those should be reserved for those who need them. I generally do not park in EV parking spots when I don't need to. I know enough people with Leafs...

Charging etiquette on the local news

I once unplugged a Volt at a mall in Monterey. There were only two charging stations available and I did not have enough charge left to reach the Gilroy supercharger.
