How to make your Android phone into an automatic Tesla hotspot

What would be really nice is if the Tesla app could automatically enable wi-fi tethering. In my case I use FoxFi since I have unlimited 4G with Verizon but don't feel like paying an extra $30/month for tethering support which normally I only rarely use. I just wish they'd fix the location bug in...

Should Model S have a solar panel?

Quick answer is no. The Fisker Karma has one. I've seen cost estimates of $5000 and payback on the order of 500 years. A 100 watt solar panel will provide roughly 1 mile of range after 3 hours of sitting in the sun assuming it's actually generating 100 watts. I would much rather have the...

    Playing FLAC files?

I'm using EXT4 myself. I found I have a lot fewer problems with illegal characters in long file names if I use EXT2/4 instead of FAT32. The artist and album information also shows up just fine for me, though in my case I ripped all of my own CDs to FLAC.

    Playing FLAC files?

FLAC files work great for me as long as they're in stereo. I tried some 5.1 FLAC files but they don't play unfortunately. Most of my music is in FLAC format. Also I tried a USB drive formatted with the Linux EXT4 filesystem. It works great!

    Replacement Key Fob Cost?

I complained about my key fob wearing out and they replaced it. I had to bring in both of my key fobs and they replaced my other one as well which I have never used. I suggested that they make them waterproof like my Toyota fob which has gone through the washing machine several times.

NHTSA Tire issue reported on Tesla 21 Inch tires

I had to get my wheels realigned right after I got my car and I recall they adjusted the toe. I'm at 9000 miles and so far my 21" tires are still OK despite a lot of quick acceleration. I've had them rotated twice, the second time a few hundred miles back. I noticed a lot more wheel slippage...

I finally found a way to secure the floor mats

In my case I gave up and replaced the front mats with the Lloyd's Luxe floor mats. They're much nicer than the Tesla mats and don't suffer from ED when I accelerate. The funny thing is that Tesla replaced my mats once and the new ones were worse than the old ones.

Trouble re iTunes MP4a files playing on usb

I think part of the problem is that ALAC is a proprietary audio format. Given that they're running Linux my guess is that it's just a lot easier to support the other open formats.

No longer allowed to respond on SA based on my comments defending Tesla

I have to laugh at some of the articles and posts. The worst one was one posted by Patent News which is so bad I don't even know where to begin. http://seekingalpha.com/article/1730442-will-tesla-design-new-vehicles-in-time-to-prevent-more-devastating-battery-fires I also see articles making...

    Nissan Leaf

I know range is a serious issue for the Leaf. A friend of mine in the Bay Area leases one and it seems he's always worried about where he can get a charge to get to his next destination just around the Bay. I'm glad that Tesla uses their own standard for their Superchargers otherwise they would...

Poll: How long did it take for the keyfob "string" to snap from your keychain?

Mine didn't come with a string so I picked up a nice one on Amazon. I've had it since March with no problems to date, though the top of my fob is showing signs of wear.

Limited to 50A - ordered with a HPWC - what to do?

In my case I doubt my house could have even handled a 50A outlet for charging. I had my main panel replaced and a second meter installed. It was a good thing too. Any electrical work the previous owner of my house did was wrong. In the main breaker panel we found he put 30A breakers on 15A...

How do you get voice command to work?

I hope they improve the voice commands. It was nice in my Prius to say "Go home" and it would navigate me to home. I could also do things like change the temperature and perform other actions by voice.

    Waterproof KeyFob?

This is something that I have always been bothered with. The key fob for my Prius has gone through the laundry several times.

    Nissan Leaf

My problem with the Leafs is that they're clogging up all the charging stations. In the rare case when I need to charge, all the spots are taken up by Leafs since they have so little range.

12v battery issue explanation, sort of...

Years ago I had the belt on my Ford Probe break. I didn't realize there was a problem until several days later when I was driving home from work at night. My car suddenly died and I pulled over to the side of the freeway and put it in park and ran the blinkers. The first tow truck that I called...

    P85 Loaner Cars! Sweet!!

When I picked up a Pearl White P85 loaner in Fremont I was surprised that it did not appear to have active air suspension. I thought all P85s had it. It also had a low hum when I drove it over 70MPh. I went over 80, but not by a lot. I'm wondering if the software disabled adjusting the air...

    P85 Loaner Cars! Sweet!!

I had the same problem with the P85 Pearl White loaner car I picked up from the Fremont service center last week. I reported the noise to them. It was very noticeable at 70MPH and above. It did not appear to be speed limited. They also had a brown loaner but they couldn't get the key fob to work.

    Firmware 4.5

I had the same thing happen. I also have had one of my doors open when I closed the driver's door. When I took my car in for service they replaced both door handles with the updated ones, though I think the passenger issue is likely a firmware issue. Now I have two updated door handles and two...

TeslaOS: What will connect via the USB port?

I have a USB hard drive formatted with the Linux EXT4 filesystem. It works great for my FLAC music collection. I also have a bluetooth keyboard with a bluetooth to USB adapter. No luck there with either the adapter or bluetooth. I also tried a USB DVD ROM drive. Again, no luck.

    Firmware 4.5

I got a notice last night that a new version of firmware is available, unfortunately I keep getting the error that the 12v battery is too low. I'm scheduled to go in for service tomorrow anyway so hopefully they can resolve it.

Firmware 5.5 in EU Spec Cars...

At Teslive it was hinted that the wiring connector is there for parking sensors on US models (not behind the bumper but not far away) so the retrofit should be possible.

Disappointed in the media situation so far (No CD player in Model S)

There really isn't a good place to put a CD player or a changer in the model S and though CDs are cheap and sound superior to MP3s they're disappearing. Tesla is not alone in not having a CD player. My father's Fisker Karma lacks a CD player as well. He has the added disadvantage in that unlike...

Disappointed in the media situation so far (No CD player in Model S)

It usually only takes a few seconds to convert the wav files from a CD to flac. The tools I use automatically do this when ripping CDs. I just pop in a CD and out pops a folder full of flac files. The ripping itself takes much longer than the conversion. With flac I can store twice as much on a...

Disappointed in the media situation so far (No CD player in Model S)

I would suggest that all Tesla has to do is add support for a USB CD/DVD ROM drive. I have one for my netbook but Tesla doesn't recognize it. Since it's running Linux it shouldn't be that hard to support.

    Fisker Karma

$5000 install for 100 amp service.....

That's not that different from what I'm paying. I'm paying $4500 to replace my main panel with a 200A panel (and 2 meters) and running conduit for a HPWC. I just wish the electrician wasn't so bloody slow getting back to me about stuff I needed to get the permits.

How busy are the Folsom superchargers?

I stopped at Folsom on 6/28 and 6/30 on my way to and from Lake Tahoe and there was only one other car there each time. There was one other silver Tesla at the timeshare, though and only one charging spot. Fortunately for me they did not use the 14-50 outlet when I did. As far as I can tell they...

Pano Roof cracked opened by itself

    Firmware 4.5

I've had a few issues since getting the 4.5 firmware release. Today the front passenger side door refused to open (even though the door handle popped out). One time the rear left passenger door just opened. The UI also feels more sluggish and I sometimes hear a funny squeal from the inverter...

What's with the tabs on the roof above the doors?

They are for a roof rack and yes, they are delicate. I broke one of them and it ended up costing me $275 to fix. They had to replace the entire roof panel ($100 for the panel, $175 labor).

2 Different Cracked Rims in 5 months

About 4K miles so far and no problems, though I have hit a few potholes (SF Bay Area). I recently read an article about the 10 worst cities for repair costs due to bad roads and San Jose was #1. I am glad I bought the tire and rim insurance when it was available.

    Dogs in a Model S??

Charging regularly from a 10-30 outlet

Multiple Model S Sightings in a Single Day

I saw a couple on Sunday when driving home from Big Sur. Due to a head wind and the fact that dirt roads use more energy than expected I had to stop and charge in Monterey for a bit before heading off to Gilroy. I had to unplug a Volt in an EV only spot to get some charge and saw a blue Model S...

What my Prius has and Tesla doesn't.

I have both a 2006 Prius and a Model S. One big difference is that Tesla will improve the software, including the GPS in future updates. Toyota won't add new functionality (and at least for me, charges $$$ for map updates). There's really no comparison. My model S is much more comfortable to...

    Big Sur Camping Trip Report

This weekend I took a road trip down Big Sur to meet up with some friends and do some camping. I took it easy driving there, stopping in Gilroy to do a full range charge before heading...

Help talk me away from the ledge

Model S Fun to Drive and Practical I think you will be very pleased with the Model S. Not only is it fun to drive but it is a very practical car. No Parts Available

Exactly. Fisker outsourced not just the battery packs but the motors, the engine and everything else and that's what ended up killing them. They outsourced their technology to companies like A123 and Quantum Technologies. They spent a lot more money so their suppliers like Quantum and A123 could...

    USB Charging

I noticed that plugging my Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone into the USB port that it does not seem to charge much, if at all and in fact may be losing charge. Has anyone else experienced issues charging via the USB ports? I'm guessing that the USB ports don't put out all that much current, though...

    Voice/speech recognition sensitivity and accuracy

I haven't been all that impressed by the voice recognition. I will be glad when the navigation system allows me to mark various destinations since I can't even speak my home address into it (I have to use the on-screen keyboard or the history if it's there).
