Will Model 3 be your first American car?

Nope. Have owned at various times a Pontiac (Fiero), Ford (Probe), Acura (NSX), Audi (A4 and A6), Volkswagen (Jetta), and Tesla (Model S). Yeah, not a lot of brand loyalty in there. But prior to the Model S the last American car I bought was in the 1980s... so make of that what you will!

    Stratechery article on Tesla

I don't know that that is an EV hit piece, though perhaps it is indirectly. I am Pro-EV, pro-solar, about as green as you can get and I HATE that the monopoly power companies are trying to build "charging networks." Our local utility PG&E is trying to get this approved. They want to build a...

Anyone Else Having Trouble Getting Service Loaners?

I've had my car in many times in the last 3 years for a variety of early car problems, some taking more than a week to get fixed. In all the visits (about a dozen now) to the service center, which is more than 50 miles away, I have exactly once gotten a Tesla loaner. All the rest were various...

Cautionary Tale - Buying a used Tesla from a used car Dealer

I don't want to say you are wrong, but my wife's car was attacked by rodents. Apparently they like to chew the wiring insulation because it tastes sweet. I thought it was a freak thing, but according to our insurer, it is actually not all that uncommon, especially in more rural areas. Edit: to...

What type of car is Model 3 replacing for you?

2009 VW Jetta TDI. Assuming VW hasn't been forced to take it back by that time. The dirty rotten scoundrels.

Current owner appetite for a Model 3

We're planning on getting a Model 3 to replace our 2005 VW Jetta "clean" Diesel. Yeah, I wonder if I will have to pay someone to haul that thing away...

    Production Constrained, Not Order Constrained

Not really. It does take money to do that of course, but the real gating factor is batteries. Until the Gigafactory (currently under construction in Nevada) is online and pumping out battery packs they could expand the Fremont factory all they wanted and not make that many more cars. That's...

Would you pay $2k for supercharger access?

This is essentially why I voted no (and we plan to get a Model III in addition to our Model S when it comes out.) We haven't used the superchargers enough for it to be worth much (8 times in 2.5 years) and I don't see that changing too much based on where we live and where we tend to travel. So...

How much are you saving from your Model S Charging Costs vs Gas for your Car?

Our situation is a bit complicated due to the fact that we got a solar system in anticipation of the Model S delivery. Technically that means I've spent far MORE on fuel (so far) than with the Audi A6 we replaced. However, the payback on the panels is unreal and over time we'll save boat loads...

Will you regret buying MS too soon if immensely better model comes out soon?

I voted No, for other reasons. I've already had 2.5 years and plan to keep the car for a long time. What's to regret? It's the best car I've ever owned and even if it has gotten better, I was driving it way before a lot of people. Technology always changes, you buy it when you do and take your...

How long do you plan on keeping the Model S?

I've had it for 2.5 years now and plan to drive it another 8. It will then be given to my daughter as her first car. That's the plan anyway, we'll see how it goes!

Volkswagen Is Ordered to Recall Nearly 500,000 Vehicles Over Emissions Software

Sure they will. Their product mix is not exactly all diesel for starters, they sell a lot more gasoline vehicles than diesels in the US. This will certainly tarnish the brand, no doubt, but I don't think it is a death blow. Attention span from car buyers is too short, it will blow over...

Volkswagen Is Ordered to Recall Nearly 500,000 Vehicles Over Emissions Software

I actually suggested we get a used Model S to have two of them to replace the TDI. She doesn't want it! She'd like a Model X, but she only drives 6K miles a year and it's not economically viable for us to get one. Once Model 3 is out, we are all over that. It's getting to that point...

Volkswagen Is Ordered to Recall Nearly 500,000 Vehicles Over Emissions Software

Anybody want to buy a 2009 Jetta TDI? Only 40K miles... oh my word my wife is PISSED at VW. Considering I've owned two Audi's and the VW as the last three cars prior to Tesla and was considering an eGolf to replace the Jetta, they are going to lose a longstanding customer here. I can't imagine...

FULLY LOADED 2013 Tesla Model S P85 (RARE METALLIC GREEN) at reasonable price / Seldom Driven / <20k

I don't think 09083 could possibly be that late in 2013 as a build date. More like April to June some time. I have 07073 and it is an early March built car.

Poll: How Actively Are You Promoting Your Referral Code?

I've probably "sold" five Model S in the last two years to various people (mostly other families at my daughter's school, we were the first Tesla and now in the mornings there are 7 or 8 and in all but one case I gave them a test drive or showed off the car and talked about it prior to them...

No EV rebate on Model X if you're rich in California or live in Georgia

Even if you count Solar City, SpaceX and Tesla together as employees of Elon Musk, he still would not be the largest employer in California. Not counting goverment agencies, I believe Disneyland is the top employer at about 26000 people.

    Preventing audio auto-play

I'm not sure then. It may come down to a combination of the fact that clearly Model S is forgetting the play/pause state and the track location state on wake combined with some oddity with how it deals with creating the virtual play list in the first place (in my example, all my tracks are in a...

    Preventing audio auto-play

What you're seeing is entirely consistent with the behavior I describe. Your "album" is one track long. It wakes up, continues playing and completes the entire track. It then stops (as the album is over) and when you get into the car it is "at the beginning" which is of course the same as at the...

    Elon Musk's 3-Biggest Powerwall Whoppers

We have a 3400 sq ft house and our average consumption per day over the last year was 41 KWh, including charging our Model S for average use of 50 miles per day! However, we have a newer house with now mostly LED lighting, gas dryer/cooktop/heat/on demand water heater so that knocks off a lot of...

Will economics of new Tesla PowerWall product will work for you?

Won't be economically or technically (as far as I can see) viable for our home use. We already have a grid tied solar system on micro inverters with net metering and no time of use plan available. The net metering and no time of use plan availability make it economically a non-starter and the...

    Preventing audio auto-play

It's actually, I think, related to charging. I listen to albums from USB (and sometimes streaming from Slacker for my daughter) and I always pause the music when I exit the car. Since the latest firmware when I return to the car after it has charged over night it is ALWAYS on the last track of...

    Smart Air Suspension: Worth it?

For me it was totally worth it. We have a VERY steep driveway that bottomed out our old Audi A6 in the rear quite often (and every delivery truck that come by, there are GOUGES in the street in front of our driveway.) The price was worth it just for that and when you combine this with...

What category of car did your Tesla replace?

Replaced a 2006 Audi A6 Quattro with 80000 miles on it. Was a very comfortable and solid performing car, but maintenance and fuel economy were eating me alive! Until the release of Model S I was going to get an A7 Diesel as my next car.

Anyone have experience with Cooper Zeon RS3-A tires on Model S?

After two years and over 24000 miles my OEM Goodyear Eagle RS-A2 tires are coming to the end of their lives. I'm planning on the next set of tires to get. I don't want to spend a huge fortune as I don't really drive our Model S 85 all that aggressively (with a kid in the car most of the time.)...

OK - the GPS based suspention is starting to annoy me

Even if they do, the issue would just never show up in Fremont or wherever in CA they are doing the software development because we don't have snow/winter. So you really only raise the suspension for things like steep driveways and so forth (like mine) and you want that every time. I agree it...

    19" stock tire life?

We're at about 22500 miles on the stock Goodyear Eagles, still holding up pretty well (7/32 all around at last measurement.) I expect to change them somewhere between the two year service (25K miles) and the 30K mile mark if tread wear remains the same as it has been. I've had the tires rotated...

Is Tesla the most American car company ever?

Well, my sticker from early 2013 put the US/Canadian content of the Model S at 55%. Once the gigafactory is cranking out cells, I imagine that would rise substantially. Would be interesting to see if the current US/Canadian content is markedly different than it was early on. Does that make...

    Funny Model S Album Art

Love my car, but the music player really needs a lot of work. As you mention, the album art is some very strange stuff sometimes. And to make it worse, it does not seem to use any album art information in your MP3 files but sources them from wherever it is (seemingly) randomly getting them from...

Wait almost 3 weeks for a flatbed Tesla pickup?

It all depends on where you live. In Northern CA at least the service wait times are indeed very long. So many cars on the road here that they underestimated service needs. I have hopes they will get better (I understand at least my closest service center is actively looking for a new much...

    Lifetime Average Wh/mi

Another update for our Model S lifetime energy use: 20,509 miles 6,337.6 Wh 309 Wh/mi I continue to get better and better average Wh/mi. This last 1000 miles was under 300 Wh/mi. Original factory tires still holding up OK as well, though I think I'll probably have to replace before 30000 miles.

    Color choice

I've had the chance to see all of the colors on real cars in person (except the new Grey.) All of them have their good points. My personal feeling is that this is a BIG car and it looks even bigger in the lighter colors. I think white is by far the worst of the color choices. The silver is OK...

    2013 Tesla P85+ Immaculate! $83k

$4200 for insurance?? If comfortable, please share what you pay?

Any guesses when we will see P85D loaners?

My car has been in for service 8 times in the last 18 months for various reasons. I've yet to get a Tesla loaner, so I am not going to hold out much hope of ever getting a D! :frown:

20 mile range gain with D? Mileage estimates seem to be all over the map.

Concision is to be desired in debate, well done. I went back and looked again at the new US site and it says the range "at 65 mph" will be 275 miles for the P85D and for the S85D it will be 295 miles whereas the base P85 and S85 both are quoted at 265 miles by the EPA. Obviously it is not...

20 mile range gain with D? Mileage estimates seem to be all over the map.

Be sure you are comparing the same spec level. The P85D will have lower range than the P85. However, the S60/85D will have longer range than the S60/85. The reasons for this as I understand it, is that the "new" S85D and S60D actually have two smaller (more efficient) motors instead of the...

    Wh/mi increasing with age?

I am also in the steadily decreasing lifetime Wh/mi group. After 3 months we were at 320 or thereabouts, 314 after a year and it is now at 311 at almost 18 months. My last 1000 miles was at 304. My guess is lifetime is heading down to mid 30x over the next 12 months. Part of this is probably...

How many miles will you put on your Tesla in 8 years? To infinity... and beyond!

Probably just over 110K I would imagine. Hard to say though as a lot depends on how awesome Model X and Model 3 are... If I end up with one of those in addition to Model S, my S miles may be lower.

Tesla warranty now has 8 year/infinite mile battery & drive unit warranty retroactive

Clearly you are correct, the value of the warranty goes down significantly. You can't make everybody happy all the time, of course, but it seems to me that Tesla could in this case by allowing anyone who already purchased the warranty to request a refund. I'm not really expecting it, but I will...

Tesla warranty now has 8 year/infinite mile battery & drive unit warranty retroactive

This is a good thing. However, I wonder what this means to those of us who purchased the extended warranty already. Clarification on this would be welcome from Tesla.

Any minor/major problems with vehicles produced in 2014?
