    Handling on AWD 3

Well, I would assume that people generally don't buy a BMW M3 solely for drag racing, particularly when considering the history that spawned the first M3s and subsequent models. Seems silly to me for a company targeting the performance of that car to solely focus on drag racing. (and likely...

    Handling on AWD 3

It’s my understanding that they’re targeting the BMW M3 with the Model 3 Performance based on this Tweet: “Cost of all options, wheels, paint, etc is included (apart from Autopilot). Cost is $78k. About same as BMW M3, but 15% quicker & with better handling. Will beat anything in its class on...

    Handling on AWD 3

I think they may still be finalizing all those little details with things changing daily. The focus is really on getting production up and vehicles out the door to Canada until the end of the month. I bet we'll see a lot more come July 1.

    Handling on AWD 3

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by the wheel size being the same? I'm assuming you mean width? ~$25k is a lot of play room for simply "more capable" inverters and motors, and bigger brakes. We also only know what size tires were offered with Tesla website 20" Sport wheel combo, and not...

    Handling on AWD 3

Objective measurements include pretty much anything the auto magazines do. Motor Trend, Road & Track, Automobile, etc... Usually includes skidpad, figure 8, some sort of slalom, a lane change maneuver, time around a race track, and some others. Subjective measurements usually include things...

18" Model 3 Tire Recommendation for Model 3

Michelin Pilot Sport AS3+ in 245/45/18. Slightly larger overall diameter, but load rating is similar. The speedo would likely read about 1.3% slow (assuming reported diameter is true to life), unless there's an auto calibration against GPS on the 3 that fixes it. Rated section width is 0.3"...

    Let's discuss Dual Motor range

A couple of things: - It is not actually a 5 cycle test for BEVs. OEMs are only required to do 2 cycle testing and then apply a 0.7 conversion factor to get their label number. Tesla chooses to do a custom conversion factor. - The PM motor and new inverter combo is likely to be much more...

Vendor Mountain Pass Performance Intro - Updates

I'd like to raise my hand for an AWD coil-over setup that is of the more comfort oriented variety that you spoke about possibly doing awhile back. Something with rebound adjustment, but a little on the softer side without as much ride height drop. Along the lines of a KW Street Comfort line :)...

Found a LOT of Model 3's in a Tesla lot - Pictures inside

Thanks for taking the pictures. But, if you're on a public street taking pictures of things in view of that public street, the security guard can't make you do anything. :)

I don’t think you undertstand what Munro does and I’m not sure what your comment has to do with their analysis of quality and design. They dont do market and sales analysis. They take apart vehicles (and planes, jets, appliances, mobile devices, etc...), benchmark, analyze, and cost. Some...

Some are obvious just from pictures. Look at what people have been posting on the forum. Visual data is still data, and more than a single point at that.

But their work is not their opinion. It is objective measurement. That’s why so many companies hire them. Now, the opinions about how to change the design or what is good/bad (unless its on a scale comparing measurements) is different.

Having personal experience with the work that Munro does, I agree. They are phenomenal at what they do. If you haven’t seen one of their reports, you likely don’t have a concept of their analysis and costing methodologies. Anyone that chooses to dismiss their work and opinions simply because...

The gap sizes themselves aren’t necessarily that important, but the consistency is. Too much variability in a manufacturing process leads to issues and points to the possibility that those designing and executing the process don’t fully understand it. End of line fixes, or post production fixes...

But, Sandy’s experience doesnt exist in a vacuum. His company is taking apart, cataloging, and costing cars, planes, appliances, phones, etc... everyday. Assuming perfect decision making and execution on Tesla’s part is a dangerous road to go down.

Finally some real data on 18 vs 19 inch tire/wheels

Be interesting to see someone test some Michelin Pilot Sport A/S3+ or Pilot Sport 4s on the 18s and compare.

    Watt/Mile to rated range

Actually, it does take into account charging losses from my understanding, because the range calculation is based on the amount of energy that is delivered to the vehicle after the range cycle testing is completed, as measured at the wall (A/C Input).

Everything I've Been Able To Learn About The Model 3 Motor: Welcome to the Machine

Bolt is a PM machine using switched reluctance effects, similar to what is being claimed of the Model 3 machine. BMW i3 did it before the both of them. This is nothing new. Here's a link about the BMW: BMW’s hybrid motor design seeks to deliver high efficiency and power density with lower rare...

Model 3 Teardown - What's under the Frunk?

Permanent magnet machine that utilizes switched reluctance effects. If it were pure switched reluctance, there would be no permanent magnets on the rotor. Both BMW and Chevy have done this with the i3 and Bolt, respectively.

Model 3 Track Day: Laguna Seca

Get yourself out to some track days. You're embarrassing yourself. I see lots of Googling and not much understanding of how things work. Nor a good understanding of what track days can do to a vehicle, particularly in the hands of a driver that knows what they are doing. BTW, tires are a...

Battery energy density of new roadster vs Model 3?

My guess is that the Roadster 2.0 pack will have to be at least 2x the volumetric energy density of the current 100kWh S/X packs. Twice the capacity and in a smaller vehicle. Leads me to believe that Tesla is looking to use a battery technology that is not yet in mass production.

Fair to say the Model 3 killed Hydrogen!

Year Wrap-Up: Who Sells More? 2016 Pickup Truck Sales Report (USA) - The Fast Lane Truck Almost 2.25 million full size pick-up trucks were sold in 2016 alone. Tesla has a national Supercharger network for roughly 150k vehicles or so. The new Clarity Fuel Cell can do 366 miles on 5.46kg of...

Fair to say the Model 3 killed Hydrogen!

My point is that physics makes hydrogen advantageous on long haul, heavy vehicles against current battery technology. How many miles has Tesla said they'll get? The rumor is maybe 300 miles? How many kWh will it take for a 80,000lb truck and trailer combo to do 500+ miles? What about 1500 miles...

Here's hoping that the July 28 event will be a complete reveal

Advertising comes in lots of different forms. They sure have a lot of videos on Youtube (Tesla) and on their website. I imagine those weren't done for free. Same goes for Tesla stores in malls where its tough to test drive and take delivery. Seem to be more focused on in person advertising of...

    Model 3 AWD option, why?

AWD adds safety only on acceleration, but not under braking or cornering (unless trying to accelerate out of a corner).
