Force Powerwalls to charge from grid

Anyone know if we will be allowed to charge Powerwalls after 5 years? The Solar ITC only requires that batteries are charged from solar for 5 years.

Tesla: we need more control over our PowerWalls

This appears to be good news. It's not exactly what I have been asking/hoping for but it could be close enough to be workable. Oct 31st is the last day of my utility demand plan's summer season. Hopefully I get the updates before then. I figure the best way to configure my custom plan is to use...

Tesla: we need more control over our PowerWalls

@xWren I agree that depending on the cloud is problematic. For me it only takes one delay sending config changes to cause a spike in my power bill. Local control is the most logical route. I have not played with the gateway API in a long time. I am sure someone can answer your question. I do...

Tesla: we need more control over our PowerWalls

I started one of those referenced threads and nothing has changed. I have the same complaints that you do. In true Tesla fashion they spend a lot of time and money developing features that would be "nice to have" rather than the practical everyday features that we have been asking for. They...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

I think it's a 30 minute period. in self-consumption mode it was 0.033. The one day test of time based control, cost savings moved it to 0.386. That was just the AC running. I imagine it would have increased with the AC, oven, stove, and washer.

App changes for utility demand customers

The powerwall app could use some improvement for users with utility demand plans. I wanted to get some ideas from other users in order to send a feature request to tesla. Of the existing modes, self-consumption responds the fastest to changes in demand changes. I would like to see a scheduled...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

Monday, Time based control, cost savings, notice the grid pulls. Those are just the ones that were recorded. Tuesday, self-consumption

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

For solar customers, my utility lowered the per kWh cost of electricity and added a demand charge. This may be why we get get 1:1 credits. A standard customer pays about $0.091 and a solar customer pays $0.065. The demand charge is $5.27/kW. Self-powered works really well for shaving my demand...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

There is no specific setting for demand plans. The "Self-powered" mode works well for demand plans. We pretty much use all the major appliances during the demand period except water heater and clothes dryer. This typically results in a demand of 0.015 kW to 0.033 kW. The only problem with this...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

I experimented with time based control this weekend. As suggested I did not define a peak. These are the balanced mode results, lots of discharging and pulling from the grid during the shoulder period. My reserve was set to 20%. The highest pull from the grid during the shoulder period was...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

It seems clear that Tesla is not concerned with demand customers. Before I purchased the powerwalls I told Tesla my intended use case and they agreed that the powerwall would work fine. They told me that the ability to schedule changes was coming. When I was finally given access, it was clear...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

That is not the behavior I want. It wish Tesla would keep things simple and implement scheduled self-consumption before jumping into estimating my needs tomorrow. My observations are that they are not taking local weather conditions into account (today and tomorrow) when deciding how much to...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

That's new to me but describes the unwanted behavior I see when in time based control.

    Communication to Gateway/Powerwall

Has your firmware version gone from 1.17.x to 1.34.x? The newer firmware sends everything over HTTPS with a really weird self-signed certificate that Chrome refuses to allow access to. On my desktop, only Firefox works. I think mobile chrome works. Does your python script disable certificate...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

Can you post a screenshot of your settings? Are you using balanced or cost savings? I think I tried this before, but I am willing to try again. I can experiment on the weekends where failure does not cost anything. Also, how do you interpret the charge and discharge priority or advanced time...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

Here's something I learned along the way. Our Tesla Energy Gateway (TEG) is connected via ethernet to a switch. If I change the reserve in the app power down the port or unplug the ethernet cable wait 30 to 60 seconds power up the port or plug the cable back in The TEG syncs with Tesla and...

Strategies for Powerwalls and Utility Demand Plans

My utility puts new solar customers on a demand plan called the "Solar Price Plan". The Solar Price Plan is the price plan for residential customers who choose to produce some of their own energy using rooftop solar. The plan encourages customers to shift their energy usage away from peak...

    Newbie to Solar/Powerwall

I forgot to mention this before, checkout the mayor of South Miami's blog. He ran a test to see if he could survive off grid for 1 week using his Powerwalls. On day 6 he does some rough calculations about whole house generators vs Powerwalls. Our area was affected by hurricane Irma in 2017. We...

    Newbie to Solar/Powerwall

@SouthFLGuy there have been a lot of useful information in this post. I would also suggest you look into a solar co-op. Solar United Neighbors is a multi-state organization that has co-ops in many Florida counties. It's a non-profit organization that helps people considering solar to install in...
