Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I sort of doubt that we will see big increases in charging speed with the 4680s. The battery day presentation made it clear that the focus for the form factor was price and scalability, not performance. The slide showing the charging speed showed a five time reduction of heat for the 4680s...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I'm not disputing any of your points, I mostly just wanted to correct the incorrect prior statement and add some speculation about clever engineering. Of course a self-sustaining civilisation on Mars, especially with true terraforming as you seem to be alluding to, is no question far beyond...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

It's not quite as bad as you make it out to be. Mars' solar constant is around 590 W/m² as compared to Earth's 1360 W/m² (43%). As Mars has a very thin atmosphere, most of that irradiation also reaches the surface while Earth's atmosphere filters out quite a bit, so the potential for solar is...

Tesla, TSLA & the Investment World: the Perpetual Investors' Roundtable

I sold some TSLA yesterday... ... to pay for my Model 3 SR+ which is due to arrive on September 27th! This marks the fulfillment of a dream pretty much exactly eight years in the making, since I first rode in the back of a Model S in 2013. And it would never have been possible without the...

Just added some at 677$. Quite a nice surprise, I did not expect to get another opportunity at this price before the battery day. Tomorrow I will have a bit more dry powder, let's look how the stock behaves then.

Couldn't resist and picked up two more at 727€. Let's see whether I will regret that or not. But hey, last time I bought with that doubtful feeling in my stomach was right after the Q4 numbers, and that went quite OK really.

Having been a luker here for the last couple of months I just wanted to thank you all for providing great investment advice over that time. I just wished I had trusted you bunch more and bought a few more shares when they were at 230$. As a total newbie in trading, at first I planned on trying...

... Which is of course why delithiation is limited to ~55% in all commercial applications.

Once your battery reaches 200°C, I suspect you have bigger things to worry about than degradation. ;) Point taken, though, some of the recent fires might not have happened with NMC chemistry. Then again, there was a recent case with a Hyundai Kona EV spontaneously bursting into flames as well...

Yep, that's why the first Nissan Leaf was particularly suspectible to that failure mode. You are right with the stability (which mostly means resistance to thermal runaway), but that does not say anything about Mn dissolution and deposition. NCA does of course not have that particular problem...

True, but the problem is inherent in all cells containing manganese. By the way, I stumbled on the forum post that led me to believe that A and B packs contain different cells. The guy salvages totalled Model S packs and sells custom welded packs from the cells. However, unfortunately he did...

As far as I know Tesla is the only major manufacturer to use NCA chemistry.

Well, I did not really forget to include that section, I merely decided to keep my post a bit shorter. What to include in such a post is every bit as much of a compromise as finding the right charging speed for electric vehicles. ;) But yes, the section is important. With those results, we can...

Thanks for the detailed reply! I'm not disagreeing with you at all. I just wanted to show the relevant charts for supercharging from the paper as well and that the exact charging protocol can make quite a difference to cycle performance. I might have misinterpreted that you wanted to say the 3A...

I think you are confusing two different changes - What I'm talking about are the muliple revisions of the "85" battery pack which went from A over B to at least D or E (I lost track there somewhere). Those had some differences that Tesla never really disclosed, but the most noticeable change was...

Allright, I might have misremembered there. Was there any official confirmation of this back then?

Bear in mind that the NCR18650A is a very different cell from the NCR1865PD or the Tesla 18650s. The former is rated for a max discharge of 2C (6A) while the PD is rated for 10A and can therefore take higher currents.

Just FYI, this site is more or less a scam. While most information is at least somewhat factual, there are no sources to back up any of the claims of the author. Also, there are a lot of generalizations that are just not applicable for most use cases or just plain wrong. There is definitely not...

To be honest, this threw me off a bit as well. Unfortunately, I have no further source on the Sanyo case apart from that post and a bit of personal experience with affected cells. However, it is true that Sanyo changed the specified maximum charging temperature from 45°C to 40°C and I know that...

Whether a pack is likely to be affected depends very much on the battery chemistry, the form factor has a negligible influence. Li plating and dendrite formation is a possible failure mode for all Li batteries, but obviously one of the deadliest. This is why most companies today put great effort...

Hi everyone, I've been a longtime silent lurker, but this topic certainly has grabbed my attention a lot and so I decided to make a lengthy post in the German Tesla forum (tff-forum.de) a few days back. It was well recieved and several members suggested I also post my findings here, which is...
