What stops you from retrofitting a demand manager to your panel after the install?

From what I can tell, if I order Powerwalls from Tesla and have solar, I can't configure it to charge from grid. Just posted a response to another thread just now regarding 3rd party certified installer somebody used in California for just the Powerwall, as an add on to existing Tesla solar...

That's pretty interesting as we have a similar SRP rebate in Arizona. Did you have any opportunity to configure your Powerwall differently for grid charge since it was installed separately? I would conceptually lose the ITC but for my purposes, grid charge would be more important to shift time...

Alternatively maybe the power input needs to happen as DC on the other side of the inverter to seem like solar power, and I suppose one could run a big honking AC to DC converter on a timer relay and take an efficiency hit of 10-20%, but that would add less than a penny still to low cost off...

It doesn't seem that challenging to build a control circuit to bypass the gateway and allow grid charging then, I'm surprised I haven't seen this done. Theoretically you could wire grid power around the gateway, and run it through an isolation transformer or something (we'd only need 30a, so...
