Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

I'm wondering if the delay in releasing the CCS retrofit in North America is some compatibility issue. I've been having troubles with CCS charging at everything but Electrify America stations (have tried both EVgo and FPL EVolution stations). Symptom being the car starts charging, and...

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Sources tell me that entering Service Mode no longer requires being next to a service center as of around 2022.16.x firmware... Have confirmed this myself on 2022.16.1.2. There's a fancy new warning, so I assume this is done on-purpose by Tesla and not some loophole.

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Y'all, I stand corrected... by none other than the car itself: fwiw the 3 never yelled at me. This is my first time charging the X...

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

The one station I looked for it, it was on the side up near the top (along with the manufacturer and safety certification standards).

Can't see too well in the pic, but it looks like just the "deadfront" is dislodged. Should be a simple replacement if that's all it is, it's a ~$10 part.

About the radio not working (maybe this is only applicable to cars with the premium interior), there's an option all the way at the bottom called "premium amp power off" or something like that. Make sure that's not checked.

You don't need to rip anything apart in the service center parking lot. Once the car is in service mode, it will stay that way even if you leave the service center. Then you can go home, take apart the car and swap out the ECU, then trigger a reinstall, no rush.

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Yes definitely. Only Model 3s built after Oct '20 (the ones that come with the 1537264-80-B ECU) can get away with just the ECU swap.

My experience (at EA stations) has been: 1a. The car unlocks the charge port when it's done charging, or... 1b. I press the button on the CCS handle as far as it will go, which is far enough to signal to the car to unlock the charge port. 2. I pull the CCS handle to disconnect it from the car...

https://electrek.co/2022/05/27/tesla-delays-deliveries-missing-charge-port-part/ Makes sense that the charge port ECU would be hard to get :D

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

First time taking my Model 3 outside of a 200 mile radius from my house, thanks to the CCS retrofit. EA 350kW locations have been pretty hit-or-miss. 2 out of 3 locations were super slow (one maxed out at 35kW, the other one maxed out at 7kW! The mobile charger is faster than that!). The EA...

Wait, you're not supposed to close CD/DVD trays by pushing them in? I've always given them a light push and they always take the hint. Knock on wood, my charge port door has been closing normally after the upgrade.

No, just Tesla-approved body shops (or I guess they're called collision centers now). There's way more of those than service centers around here. (from Collision Support | Tesla) Only 4 of those pins are service centers.

Also wanted to add that it tapered down to ~80kW by the time it got to 60% SOC. I seem to not be able to edit my own posts either. Nvm, new member thing, all good now.

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Haha it worked! Thanks again @FalconFour. Theoretically it should be able to pull a lot closer to 180kW (It's a 350kW, 500A station), but even this is a huge upgrade over the 50kW joke that was CHAdeMO. Speaking of which, anyone want to buy it from me? :D Also weird, I'm not being able to...

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

When you sign in to EPC I think there's a link for a parts ordering application form. That's what I was told to submit. I left the parts about workers insurance and shop photos and stuff blank (cause I don't have any of that). I did have a used car dealer business license that I was able to use...

Context-free bundle of wires? Check. Gen4 charge port ECU? Check. Friendly visit to the parking lot of the nearest Tesla-approved body shop? Check. And now I wait... In my quest to get a Gen4 ECU, I visited 3 service centers. My local pointed me to EPC, where I discovered the ridiculous $200...

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Yeah, I've got a used car dealership set up so I was able to use that business license. I left most of the fields blank if they didn't apply to me (like shop address, pictures, work insurance, etc). They took their sweet time reviewing the application... almost 3 weeks. Local SC was definitely...

Retrofit CCS compatibility onto earlier (NA) Model 3 - DIY approach

Just got my context-free bundle of wires! Really excited, although I'm not particularly sure why... Jokes aside, great work Falcon! All I need now is a Gen4 ECU. The local service center (Decatur, GA) just points people to EPC to order parts, which wants $200 just for shipping (not including...
