    Electrify America general discussion

The "good times" are over - but I'm not surprised. I figured EA must be operating at a considerable loss to run some of the stations at the prices they were at, especially in California. EVs are getting really expensive to use for travel.... the higher number of EVs in general is making...

They don't have to - but it's better for the EV industry in general. A monopoly is not great - a healthy, competitive ecosystem can only benefit the general public in the long term. I get that American Tesla owners may feel like a big reason for buying a Tesla is the "exclusivity" of the...

In California at least, I've switched over to use EA almost exclusively - the pricing difference is hard to ignore. 36c/kWh versus 45+ is too high - it adds up quickly on road trips which I do often, e.g. 50kWh saves at least about $4.50 per charge, which already exceeds the monthly...

Tesla x Konig Model Y Chains Destroyed My Rims...Need Some Advice

Even with AWD + dedicated snow tires, chains continue to give me grief 😭 A broken tire chain link got embedded in one of my tires as I was driving over the I-80 in California to Reno, NV. I was lucky enough to be within 3-5 miles of downtown Reno when I noticed my tire air pressure dropping...

Which gaps are you looking to fill? As in, which route are you referring to that lacks superchargers? Asking because I’m curious to know - I’ve seen a few in US-50 in Nevada, southern Colorado and in the reservations in Arizona.

    Electrify America general discussion

Yes! This is the best way to do it. EA should be used as a supplement to Tesla Superchargers. Lower prices are great, but it's a nightmare if it doesn't work and you're stuck with no way to charge (quickly). It takes a bit of getting used to, but strategically filtering via the Plugshare app +...

    Electrify America general discussion

Using EA properly requires a bit of planning - and careful use of the plug share app. If you’re just starting out, only pick EA stations that are adjacent to Tesla Superchargers. * you get the advantage of preconditioning by setting your Tesla nav to that supercharger. * there’s a backup if...

    CCS Adapter for North America

Yeah this is the main plus of the CCS adapter for me - it adds a lot more options. They may not be as fast as the superchargers, but it's better to have something than nothing.

    CCS Adapter for North America

I agree with the rest about Tesla always having had supply issues (although it's unclear to me why Korea doesn't have the same issues and were available for order) - but for the retrofit issue why not just require users to enter their VIN? I believe that's what Tesla Korea already does? That way...

    CCS Adapter for North America

Ah I didn't know that, thanks for the info. But surely now there wouldn't be? One thing I considered is that there could be a components shortage for it. On the flip side, my understanding is that it's more or less a dumb pass-through adapter without a microprocessor it should be easier to...

    CCS Adapter for North America

At this point I think Tesla NA is just being unnecessarily annoying with the CCS adapter rollout. If the concern is that people buying might not have a Tesla that supports it, just do the same as Tesla Korea is - request that users enter their Tesla's VIN before attempting a purchase. That...

How much extra would you pay for a Hotel with Destination Charging that you could Reserve?

I think the bigger issue here is that this is needed at all. It shouldn’t be needed - destination charging should be a nice-to-have convenience, not a make-it-or-break-it thing on road trips. A person shouldn’t have to make a 50 mile detour just because they can’t guarantee access to...

    CCS Adapter for North America

Inflation is making everything really expensive now. The EA flat rate charges are now relatively cheap in comparison (especially if you get the membership) while still having ample fast charge options. I suspect they will be raising rates soon.
  17. masotime

    Supercharging prices decrease

It’s basically worse all around in California. If you can still get it, the official Tesla CCS adapter is a compelling option for road trips now when you have less likelihood of being able to get off peak hour rates at superchargers.

    CCS Adapter for North America

I guess you might have been looking at the EA line instead? It's interesting that Tesla allows the EA to sustain a "higher" (180kW+) charge rate over a longer period for the EA charger. I wonder if there's some kind of automatic "safety cutoff" that prevents charging at 250kW for too long from...

Model 3 Review after 5 months

In my experience, EPA ranges in general are overstated. The car I owned before my Model Y was a Prius with a rated range of 571 miles. I really only got 400 miles (i.e. 70%) out of it on a full tank. I think 70% is a good ballpark of “real world” range - so in your case, 290 * 70% = 203 miles…...

Yes the length makes me feel uncomfortable. It confuses me that 14ft is the "supercharger" version - to me that is a non-trivial length to extend for that much power flowing (250kW+) through the circuit - the added resistance will, if nothing else, waste power due to unwanted heating. I...

Yes - that's my approach - at least until the dust settles and there's 1. a common connector across all EVs 2. EV charging stations with the same frequency as gas stations across the US. I do road trips often to remote areas and regularly plan my steps with all the tools I can find - having...

The Harumio adapter has been really easy to purchase though, and the price isn't too bad. I think you might not need to drive around - maybe try this sequence while parked * Ensure you're reasonably near a supercharger (not more than 30mi / 50km away) * Set the navigation to a supercharger * Press the brake pedal once I believe preconditioning will automatically trigger, although...

    Preheat for CCS usage

Yeah this is a good point. I think Tesla internally calculates time to warm to ideal temperatures (I think 40C?) and time to destination, and starts preheating if time to destination <= time to 40C.

    Preheat for CCS usage

Yeah my impression is that it turns on at about 30 miles, which roughly corresponds to your 50km estimate. From my testing you don't actually have to be driving though. It is enough to set the destination and if you activate the brakes it will begin pre-conditioning (assuming one is already in...

Interesting - I’m not sure how accurate TeslaFi is, but I subscribe to it and checked - it also lists “efficiency” numbers during my charges. Hmmm… I don’t think that’s true - I’ve done the math before while waiting at a supercharger - the indicated +kWh on the screen doesn’t match the accumulated money I’m paying (I calculated $ / kWh). It might not work though? I feel like there’s not a lot of confidence that it will, which is a big factor for me in any consideration to buy this. CCS Adapter for North America

The lack of availability in the NA store is the most frustrating part for me. Being able to hit 150kW+ speeds using a first-party adapter is a game changer IMO - especially...

Yeah this is my experience as well. I've driven several hundred miles using this approach so far - during the winter snowstorm in Tahoe in December 2021. Winter handling Subaru vs dual-motor model Y

I'm curious if you'll experience better handling if you turn on Off-road assist? That forces power to all four wheels, which for me makes the handling more stable although the car "feels" slower because you have to push the acceleration pedal harder for the same effect as without Off-road assist.
