An update on this. I called my local center and was able to get the refund.

haha, yes exactly ;) to be honest, i had the reinforcement learning intuition before watching that talk (just due to the nature of the problem) and I wasn't sure why others weren't doing it already, but I was quite happy when geohotz mentioned it's the future.

transformers are great and all, but I think long term they're probably going to switch to a more end-to-end learned model, with some kind of reinforcement learning. Kind of like AlphaGo. What they're doing right now is essentially large scale feature engineering, which is almost always inferior...
