You have to own the car and drive it to figure out if it works for you though. There has to be at least a few percent of potential buyers who refuse to buy a Tesla just because of this one small issue. Are they wrong and lack of stalks is better in every way? Maybe but they'll never buy the car...
They could easily do a market test. Charge $250 (or make it free) option for stalks when ordering. See if people are willing to cover the difference in price.
This is what some of the experts here discount other people's opinions when they say they dislike lack of stalks or center horn telling...
I finally got this resolved. A person at the tax office said to email
[email protected]
with your purchase agreement. They might want some other things to best to e-mail and ask.
Talking about center horn update here. Your opinion was Tesla will never change it and those complaining about it were wrong and needed to get over it. So odd that you ended up being wrong there. Apparently it wasn't that clear. Equally odd they brought it back for the Cybertruck, Model 3, Model...
People can have opinions about all kinds of things. That doesn't make them right or well shared opinions. "lol" I guess why not get rid of all the physical buttons? A small mousepad could havel all kinds of gestures drawn on it while driving and turning the steering wheel without looking. Change...
It's funny the people who disagree that Tesla has done anything wrong with their design of steering wheel controls. Should they maybe get rid of the remaining two school wheels for volume/song selection...etc and replace them with two small mousepad style areas on steering wheel sides to swipe...
It works, the target is narrow and partially blocked from view. It doesn't have to be. It's an LCD screen so they can program it to look however they want. This is a software wishlist thread, that's my request. Make it suck less.
I've said this before but they could easily keep both camps happy. Yoke with flat buttons for some, round steering wheel with stalks for everyone else.
It's very narrow and reverse is blocked by the wheel without me moving my head so yes, they could make it easier to simply swipe up and down. But I have a button for reverse now anyway so far easier and faster to hit that. It's just a bad UI. Massive screen yet you need to hit a small thing...
I probably wouldn't get either at this point either with a $20,000 budget unless you can afford repairs down the road. Better to keep the car you have if possible and save up for something a few years from now.
They are very unlikely to make this change so that third party option would be the only way to keep Tesla for you. Such a dumb move on Tesla to lose even a single sale for a $20 part.
So explain then so I'm not assuming anything. You disliked my statement saying I think Tesla went to far eliminating almost all physical buttons so assume you disagree there.
Put it this way. From 2012-2020 how many threads are there about "I can't stand this steering wheel" or "What's the deal...
You want less physical controls that the two steering wheel scroll wheels? You think the current implementation is well done with no need for improvement (the fact we have a center horn again kind of discounts that theory).
Agree. I am hoping they force a push back to physical control for some functions. It's great to have a screen for most of the lesser used settings but I think Tesla went a little too far with 2 buttons for the entire car.
The stalks are not an expensive part of the car and wouldn't slow down production of a car that sells 20,000 a year or so. The Model S isn't a price sensitive model so if it costs $74,990 versus $75,120 I'm sure it would sell just as well.
I see. Still seems to be it depends on how the EU regulators interpret the language of a 'physical control' or whatever was in that post from before. But maybe we haven't seen the final language of the regulation. I wouldn't consider a flat button with no physical feedback a physical button or...
He just said he'd place an order and get back to me. I'm not even sure if it will work yet but I'll find out and report back. I have a service scheduled in a week but I should have asked the price though. I was just surprised he didn't say immediately it wasn't possible.
Are you playing music through a service on the Tesla screen like Apple Music? If so, audio from your phone won’t connect. You have to click the Bluetooth icon.
I see. I figured they wouldn't want a black bar there to shift things right but putting important things there like the gear selector isn't ideal. That and the car icon to get to settings are both blocked from view.
I went to my local service center with the part numbers @EtherMN posted and they seemed to be able to find them and said he could order the parts. So will see if they can get it done. Thanks for the post.
The amount of money they save on the Model S and X for those buttons has to be rather small. It just pisses customers off to save $50 at most I'd assume. Maybe someone knows that actual savings.
The need to put dead space on the left side of the screen since it's being blocked for some by the round steering wheel.
Put the word TESLA or something going up.
The main reason they should take care of this for customers is there is a tweet from the CEO promising all cars from Nov 2021 have the hardware there just pending software update (not true at all) and it was never retracted or corrected by Tesla's non-existent PR department.
I think that is probably likely but they are also facing more competition now. If they can squeeze and extra $2,000 out of someone post sale without too much effort, they might do it.
They did offer the USS upgrade to 2012-2014 (or so) Model Ss as well but they asked around $7,000 for it when...
Still on 2023.33.30.8 update. 2023 Model S and car says it’s up to date. So just waiting I guess. You’d think there would be a faster update of the fleet over time.
Your only safe bet is to wait and hope they offer it again. I jumped as they said 'one time offer expires Dec 31st' and I was waiting for front bumper camera too. But a month later, they offer the transfer again until March 31st. So odds are, they'll do it again now and then to boost sales.
If we are happy with 19" rims, what setup would you recommend in a 2023 Model S? I'd like to be able to rotate tires but don't want to create any issues changing from factory setup either. Thanks.
The EU is a large market so it’d be an incredibly stupid decision to ignore lost sales over $100 in parts or something. So the board would need to act if CEO didn’t.
But as pointed out above, they can still sell, it will just impact their safety rating. Which might impact sales though.
Again, they aren't physical clickable buttons but rather capactive touch buttons. The old Model S had physical buttons and stalks. A physical hazard button that you didn't have to tap top wake up, wait, and then tap again. They do say 'overuse of touchscreen' but then also say 'physical...
They are counting the flat non-physical buttons on the steering wheel as not being valid for their safety rating I assume. So don't think that's sensational.
Looks like the EU might take care of this (for EU at least).

But I don't think it's too confusing. Mercedes has had it this way...
