    Corrective steering ruining everything

As OP, I thought I’d just finish off this thread from my point of view. At the start of September, I talked to another Tesla Service employee who sounded genuinely horrified at the fact that my ordering, driving and service experiences have all been absolute disasters. He repeated many times...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Looks to me as though you’re talking about Forward Collision Warnings, and there’s certainly an option to turn them off (but I *think* if you choose “off” rather than, say, “late” it might turn itself back on the next time you drive the car - I can’t check as mine is still away being worked on)...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

I’ve written a letter that I thought I’d send to the head of Tesla Europe on the matter of unwanted/dangerous corrective steering events. From what I can tell, that person would be Mark Hewitt, but I haven’t yet found an address for him. Anyone out there know where I could send my letter? I...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks for taking the time to share that! And I quite agree with your conclusion. In my case, it will take many hundreds of hours of trouble-free driving to erase the experience of one major scare. You don’t need a car to steer you towards danger many times - or even make you think it’s going to...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Really appreciate you sharing your experience, thanks! My current thought is that I’ll write to someone fairly high up in Tesla Europe and ask for a definitive ruling on this issue. Alarms that make accidents more rather than less likely to happen are not to be taken lightly in my opinion, even...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

I’m looking forward to the day when it’s easy to buy an old gas-powered car retrofitted to be electric. I reckon an older LeSabre could be a good candidate for that. I haven’t driven a LeSabre for about 20 years (coincidentally) but I remember them being about as comfortable as my living room...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks so much for commenting! Your post was both exactly what I was hoping for and exactly what I feared. It would be much easier if my car is the problem rather than the roads. Aberdeenshire, like Wiltshire, has a lot of narrow, winding roads with what I think are called “soft verges”, i.e...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks for taking the time to read and reply. I appreciate it. Yes, this “Road Departure Detected - Corrective Steering Applied” seems to be a pretty rare message. So much so that most people (including, I think, the folks at the Service Centre) sometimes seem to think that I’m talking about...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

I tried this, BTW, for the last few alarms I got before taking the car in. But my local Service Centre told me that they don’t have access to these logged service messages. They told me that they go straight to Engineering and the repair team can’t see them. Sounds farfetched, but that’s what...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks, All. I think this thread might have served its purpose as far as it can. I got my S back and the little bit of good news is that they fixed the auto-present handles problem. I can unlock the car now by approaching it with the key fob. Never been able to do that before and it’s apparently...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Mini-update: My S is at the Service Centre and is apparently undergoing a “firmware upgrade”. I haven‘t been able to find out much about the software stack of Teslas, so I don’t know what lives in firmware, but I’m assuming it’s closer to the hardware than the typical OTA software upgrade, so...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks! Every owner I learn about who never gets spurious alarms gets me a bit closer to getting mine fixed, I reckon. It’s something more to tell the Service Centre people when they’re being noncommittal about whether there’s a problem or not.

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Oh, wow! That’s really very kind of you. Your point certainly makes sense: that the car would be more concerned about crossing a line on the road if there’s no clear sign (i.e steering wheel pressure) that it’s intentional. On the other hand, I’m one of these old-fashioned types that always (and...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

That’s very kind, thanks! And yes, problems are unavoidable, but if they’re combined with feeling ignored they become a real irritation. I happened to buy my car during the early days of lockdown and I guess Tesla were really short of staff for a while. I couldn’t get anyone on the phone and no...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

That’s a great tip, thanks. I’ll definitely try that if tomorrow’s Service Centre visit doesn’t yield some results. You mentioned problems with Lane Departure Warnings; do you ever get issues with Road Departure Detected warnings? Those seem to cause me the most trouble and be the most...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks for that ! I have to say, I don’t really understand it from the marketing angle. If you try to sell a people-carrier to folks who find driving a chore and who just want safety, then a pushy car that interferes a lot might be fine. But if you make it look nice, make it fast, price it more...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Really appreciate the kind words! Thanks! I think you’re exactly right that the logs are too extensive just to wade through. On the other hand, I don’t think anyone on this thread has mentioned getting a Road Departure warning. And I’ve certainly never come anywhere close to accidentally driving...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Oh, that’s sneaky! Sadly I just tried it and I was blocked at every turn. First problem: on the Model S that message appears on the display above the steering wheel, which isn’t a touch screen. But a bit of digging and it seems that those same warnings appear under Service/Notifications. But...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Anyone technical know anything about how Tesla OTA diagnostics work? Apparently I need to provide an exact date & time for one of my unwanted alarms so the Service people can check the logs on my car to learn more. Seems reasonable, but it’s not really convenient for me to drive around waiting...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

I need to slightly correct that last grumpy rant. I’m still very disappointed in Tesla’s customer service, especially the buying process which was absolutely farcical in my case. But I’ve just learned that my local Service Centra have texted me twice in the recent past to let me know they’re on...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks! I really appreciate it. It’s a puzzle to me that there isn’t what you might call a “full manual” mode that just puts the driver in sole control. How would anyone drive an S on a race track, for instance? The Road Departure warning would have a fit. As a kind of once-in-a-lifetime splurge...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Wow, that sounds amazing! Next you’re going to tell me that everything on the car works and the wind never makes a whistling sound as it blows through the panel gaps. If it’s OK, I might show your post to my local Service Centre and see if they have any comments.

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks so much for the info! I was beginning to think that no one else’s car threw alarms at them, but I think your experience goes in the “The car sometimes beeps and wriggles; don’t much care” column rather than the “Never beeps and wriggles” column. Not doubting your word for a second, but I...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Oh, that’s excellent! If that works, I could drive the car any way I want, without worrying about upsetting the software. I could imagine owning a Tesla might be pretty good fun under those circumstances! Sorry to sound like a broken record, but can I ask if you get many alarms and do they...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

No luck with the driver profile, but it seemed like a great idea, thanks. I deleted the profile associated with my keyfob and created a new one. I was at least hoping it might fix my inability to get the car to unlock and auto-present handles just by walking up to it, but alas, I still need to...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve got it booked into the Service Centre for next week so I’ll ask them to look into that. Can I ask how often you get alarms when driving? And does it happen more on narrow roads?

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks so much for that! This is exactly the kind of info that I’m desperate for. Until I can understand whether the problems I’m complaining about are things that everyone else is fine with - or whether they’re things no one else is experiencing - then I can’t really plot my next move. I am...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks for the comments! I’d be really interested to know how often users of this forum get alarms sounding in their cars. And of those, how many were useful. As you can imagine, an alarm going off convinces my passengers (and me, really) that something serious is happening, so I don’t think...

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Thanks for the reminder. I’m pretty well trained to indicate when changing lanes, with the possible exception of being on a completely empty road. The thing is, when I’ve been able to read a message following an alarm it usually mentions “road departure” not “lane departure”.

    Corrective steering ruining everything

Wow, thanks for that. I’ve also never been able to unlock the car just by walking up to it with the key, plus auto present door handles doesn’t work. The service centre have been puzzled by that, but perhaps a corrupted driver profile could explain both. Will try that tomorrow. Thanks!

    Corrective steering ruining everything

I want to say first that I don’t use autopilot, self-driving or (after a few bad experiences) adaptive cruise control. So I’m not talking about those things. I’ve also turned off as many forms of driver assistance as I can (though of course several turn themselves back on every drive cycle). I...
