How hard is it to drive a long trip in Australia (900+ Km)

I did Brisbane to Darwin twice in an ICE. Even that is challenging. You hit a 550 km (280 mi) stretch from Camooweal to the three ways with no gas stations in between (let alone superchargers). There are signs warning motorists that a headwind may increase fuel consumption enough to strand them...

Exactly. I experience phantom braking as a passenger in my wife's Honda all the time.

I have the same issue, but if you start parking, the option to start auto park comes up midway and it will complete it for you. For me it’s the only practical way to use it.

Anyone own a red Model 3 or Y?

My 2021 M3 is red. My wife pushed for the color (I didn’t see the point in $2k for a color), but I’m glad she did. It’s a beautiful look.

    My Off Grid Solar System

Interesting set up. I have a much smaller solar setup on my much smaller shed. Just 2x 100 W 12 V panels, a 30 A PWM solar charger, and old car battery (~700 Wh), and a 800/1600 W inverter. The first panel and charger came as a kit for about $100 from Amazon, the second panel and additional...

FSD price increase on Jan 17

Which is why I said marginal cost. And the FSD computing requirements are already paid by every Tesla purchaser since they were dubbed FSD ready whether they have FSD or not.

FSD price increase on Jan 17

To be fair, those are services with non-zero marginal cost to provide an additional unit to a customer. Once FSD and rival software have been developed, addition of another user to the system costs effectively nothing, and price competition drives the market price to the marginal cost. I just...

FSD price increase on Jan 17

Adaptive cruise control has been available since the 1990's but my 2011 Lexus RX350 didn't have it standard. Maybe with shorter development cycles the newer tech upgrades of today will be standard after a shorter gap, but it looks like FSD's main competitors are either looking at subscription...

FSD price increase on Jan 17

What I’m responding to is the idea that Apple is an exception to the general trend of preference for ongoing revenue over upfront revenue. At the same time that the rest of the market, and in particular the tech sector, starting moving towards SaaS, so did Apple.

FSD price increase on Jan 17

Absolute revenue from iPhone sales have been stagnant since 2015, while services have grown from 9% to 22% of revenue: Apple didn’t hit the mark of worlds most valuable company until 2020 when it over took Aramco. No doubt, the gross revue from upfront sale of hardware is the larger share...

    $12K for FSD is insane

Depends how close they are to a release, and how final that release is. They will hike the price bit by bit as release gets closer, and as the software goes from level 2+ to 3 and beyond. The upfront payment model is definitely going away, just like free unlimited supercharging. And just like...

FSD price increase on Jan 17

Apple also offer subscription services like Apple TV+, Apple Music, iCloud storage and Apple care, plus iOS developers need a yearly subscription to access the SDK. They also generate steady ongoing revenue through their take on their App Store.

    $12K for FSD is insane

The closer we get to a release, the closer we get to the service going subscription only. Offering FSD as an outright purchase was just for initial early adopters. Raising the upfront cost is just being done because they don’t need more takers to fund the development, and because they don’t want...

Are the cameras on the FSD good enough so that I don't have to worry about things like it clipping another car that's on the road?

If you don’t like putting torque on the wheel, as an alternative you can flick the volume control or cruise control up one notch and then back down again to dismiss the nag. But you absolutely need to keep hands on the wheel and for god’s sake don’t stick a cell phone on there.

Are the cameras on the FSD good enough so that I don't have to worry about things like it clipping another car that's on the road?

Well, all I can suggest is that you re-calibrate the cameras and make sure that some of the calibration time is spent driving on the roads where you experience this issue. That will allow the car to get accurate distances to the objects with the ultrasonic sensors and compare those with camera...

Teslas and other Evs in the I-95 24-hour backup

Assuming we're talking about the Tesla equipped with the smallest battery (M3 SR with 56 kWh battery) and then assume that you get stuck with a half charge (so 23 kWh available). A large space heater draws 1500 W i.e. 1.5 kW so 1.5 kWh per hour, so assume the car's climate control is no less...

Are the cameras on the FSD good enough so that I don't have to worry about things like it clipping another car that's on the road?

I also have the beta and it's much better at lane centering than AP. It keeps a better distance from parked vehicles, but also handles situations where a 1-lane abruptly transitions to 2 lanes, or a turning lane suddenly begins much better. The AP would just act as though it was one big lane...

Are the cameras on the FSD good enough so that I don't have to worry about things like it clipping another car that's on the road?

You must have calibrated the cameras, otherwise you wouldn't even be able to activate autosteer.

Tesla's AEB system fails according to Jalopnik/Luminar. Beware of FUD

I just got through watching the joint Luminar-Volvo-Zenseact press conference from the CEC. This might be petty, but the first thing that struck me is how poorly a company specialized in the collection and interpretation of visual and spatial data was at mastering simple audio-visuals. They play...

Are the cameras on the FSD good enough so that I don't have to worry about things like it clipping another car that's on the road?

How close you get to parked cars may depend on your camera calibration. Did you calibrate the cameras while driving on city streets, or on the highway? How long since your most recent calibration?

Tesla's AEB system fails according to Jalopnik/Luminar. Beware of FUD

It seems like this thread could benefit from actually reading Tesla own description of what AEB does. It does not avoid collisions and is not designed to. It is designed to lessen the severity of collisions by slowing down. As such it only deploys once the collision is unavoidable i.e. stopping...

    Terrible accessory ordering experience online

Our laundry is kinda near the bedroom, so we never dry at night. Would disturb our sleep. And the scheduled charging is purely for avoiding charging at the same time as drying, not for off-peak power rates (we have a flat rate here). I guess it’s in principle possible that due to a Tesla...

Paid for FSD, when will I get the software?

It’s amazing how closely our experiences parallel. I haven’t tried it yet. Have friends visiting and don’t want to scare them with it. For the release notes I just took the version number (2021.44.25.6) and googled it. First hit was release notes on notateslaapp.com When you say it doesn’t like...

Paid for FSD, when will I get the software?

Over the past few days I’ve had a safety score of between 98 and 100 depending on what I’ve been doing. Just now (30 minutes ago) I got notice of a new software update (2021.44.25.6) which is an FSB beta 10.8 with the holiday update stuff (UI v11). It’s installing now.

    Should I trade my 2015 WRX for a 2022 M3 RWD ?

If your plan is to avoid the repair on the WRX by replacing it with a new M3, have you factored wait time on new Tesla orders? My parents just ordered an M3 LR in Queensland and it is expected in April.

    FSD or no FSD?

FSD on a leased car is ridiculous. If you really want the features, do the $199/month plan. There’s no reason for you to pay $10k for something that would cost less than that over the period of the lease. Selling fully prepaid FSD on a leased car is the Tesla’s equivalent of upselling you on the...

Paid for FSD, when will I get the software?

No worries 🙂 My safety score dropped to 98 after it says I did “hard braking” and “aggressive turning”. I managed to get it back up to 99, but I’m driving extremely carefully even for me, and this is getting to be a bit much. FCW = Forward Collision Warning NOA = Navigate on Autopilot SAE =...

Paid for FSD, when will I get the software?

I just took my first ever trip after signing up for Safety Score Beta. I had one phantom FCW event while using auto-steer and my safety score after the trip was concluded is 100. So I can confirm: FCWs while using AP doesn’t affect your score. Keep in mind that what does affect your safety score...

Paid for FSD, when will I get the software?

The latest information I've seen said there are about 11,000 current FSD Beta users and about 150,000 waiting in the queue. It was a fairly rapid expansion from the initial 1,000 FSD Beta users to the current level, so I'd expect to get all of those in the queue that don't have abysmal safety...

Getting a handle on cost of home charging

Looks like we’re on the same update schedule. Did you also get 2021.44.6? I opted in, with the understanding that it could be a long time before I actually see any FSD beta download, if ever. I drive pretty chill anyway, especially if my wife is in the car.

Supercharger charging costs delivered or accepted?

I’d think the opposite is true. Direct DC fast charging generates a lot of heat which is energy that is delivered not accepted. It definitely varies by region. Tesla even implies this is the case on their website where they state, “Whenever possible, owners are billed per kWh (kilowatt-hour)...

Does Tesla charge sales tax at its chargers?

Next week I plan to do some supercharging in GA. Would be good to collate data on sales tax in different jurisdictions. It may even vary down to the county level as counties impose sales tax on top of state sales taxes.

Ford Decides to Double Production Plan for EVs

My guess is battery technology and price will improve at such a rate that before I would need a replacement due to a failure I will want a replacement to upgrade to something with more range/better chemistry/faster charging. Tesla patents are open source so even the 4680s could be copied by...

Ford Decides to Double Production Plan for EVs

    Terrible accessory ordering experience online

Did they communicate with you over the defective tire pump kit? Or fully automated system for applying for a return, printing a shipping label, etc.? Terrible accessory ordering experience online

My (limited) understanding of the car sales industry as it applies to legacy manufacturers is that they make very high profits on the accessory sales. Basically, they compete for your business as far as selling you a car by slashing margins, but then once you’ve bought a particular model they...
