Does a battery ever have a positive ROI with net metering

I agree, to clarify I think dynamic tariffs make sense for homes with solar/battery, not everyone. Maybe I'd also include homes with EVs, heat pumps and other large loads that could be smart about when they pull from the grid.

Does a battery ever have a positive ROI with net metering

One approach that should both help the grid and improve battery ROI is real-time/wholesale/dynamic pricing -- utility rates that change hourly or even more frequently, track wholesale prices more closely, and are generally announced 24h ahead. These plans are not common in the US yet, but I've...

    Netzero App

I would suggest turning off all of these while investigating this problem. Try accessing it via the TEG wifi network when it's not responsive (scan the QR code behind the door, then access https://192.168.91.1). If that works, it's likely a connectivity issue with your home wifi network. If...

    Netzero App

FleetAPI is a cloud API, it doesn't talk to the gateway API directly. Netzero can also talk to your gateway, but only while using Diagnostics in the mobile app. Powerwall-Dashboard will send frequent gateway API requests, but is pretty stable. Unless you have other gateway API use, I doubt...

Uptime comes from /api/status (which doesn't require authentication). For debugging the issue: You've probably done this already, but step 1 is to stop your API calls if you believe this to be the cause :) I've read about cases where gateways get into a bad state while trying to update the...

You can likely accomplish this with scheduling. For example, if it takes 2h to charge your battery from the grid, turn off grid charging 1h after the start of free time and turn it back on 1h before the end of free time. Or, to keep it simpler and independent of your starting state-of-charge...

    Netzero App

Thanks for the suggestions! Agreed about manual control. You can accomplish this with the "Test Now" button when creating an automation (and then abandon the automation), but that's obviously not a great UI. For your storm example: I plan on adding weather alert integration, so you can have a...

Does a battery ever have a positive ROI with net metering

The peak load is probably for backup heat / strip heat. That is a lot less efficient, but will only kick in if the geothermal system fails (or in case of air-source heat pumps, if the outdoor temperature is too low). You don't usually see backup heat installed in milder climates like CA.

You can now create automations based on Powerwall state of charge, e.g. turn Export Everything on/off when SoC crosses predefined thresholds. Would that allow you to make use of the incentive program?

Post Installation / Pre-PTO System Intentionally Limited?

With 4 Powerwalls you should be fine, as long as you can also discharge them to charge them up again the following day. Also, if you can charge your EVs during the day, that's a great way to use up excess solar that would have otherwise been curtailed. I don't think you'll be able to use...

Can't see other vehicle charging graphs in Tesla app

Yes, this is a bug in the Tesla app. I have the same problem and I also looked at this in detail as part of my work on the Netzero app. Tesla has two sources of data for vehicle charging: the wall connector and the vehicle itself (both via Tesla's cloud). The wall connector is part of your...

I'll think about that. The billing cycles for my utility (PG&E) range anywhere from 28 days to 33 days, without any clear pattern.
  15. offandonagain

    Netzero App

It's common that there will be some fluctuation in the measured capacity. Powerwalls constantly estimate their "full pack energy", but that's not a precise measurement -- it relies on measuring voltage/current and is sensitive to temperature, charge/discharge rates, etc. I won't pretend to...

    Netzero App

I spent some more time in the rabbit hole that is vehicle charging data, so this should be more reliable now in Netzero. Let me know if you still run into issues. The rabbit hole is deep, even Tesla gets it wrong sometimes: in my case (wall connector present, Tesla car where I'm the driver but...

Powerwall panic button, what if it gets pushed?

The big red button is a DC disconnect, it will disable solar output. Used by emergency responders or when power-cycling the system. To turn it back on, twist it clockwise a few times and it will pop back out. I'm not familiar with PW3, but later versions of PW2 had a little plastic cover like...

    Netzero App

That's quite a conundrum, thanks for sharing. I may add support for multiple accounts in the future, in the meantime I would suggest you look at something like Emporia Energy monitors to track the combined view.
  19. offandonagain

    Netzero App

That may very well be the case, but I always try to learn about such requirements because it allows me to improve the app in the future (and multiple systems is not an uncommon scenario). You mentioned the Tesla gateway cannot measure your Enphase production, I'm curious why. With multiple...

    Netzero App

Which data are you hoping to get from Green Button downloads? From my experience (PG&E), the only data available is 15-min resolution historical grid import/export, with a day delay. Tesla already has both live data and 5-min resolution historical data for grid import/export. A related...

Thanks, this was another case of spurious wall connector states. I made these checks more robust now, but let me know if you run into any other issues.

Possibly, but if you send me a note from the app I can investigate in more detail.

    Netzero App

Thanks for the report. I actually had the same thing happen today and was able to investigate in more detail. Wall Connectors sometimes erroneously report a charging_completed state. I fixed this specific issue (fix is already live), and I'll think about other ways to make it more robust.

    SPAN.io and Powerwall interface

I don't use SPAN, so these are just assumptions based on what I know about Tesla hardware and I've read about how SPAN works: SPAN uses the ethernet cable as a reliable connection to the gateway/Powerwall+. It presents itself as a "router" to the gateway, which solves two problems: no need to...

    Netzero App

Yup, thanks! Fix already out for this timezone -- it was meant to show totality in the US, but I realized that's confusing for parts that will only see a partial eclipse.

    Netzero App

Oops! I'll blame this one on PVWatts -- it's based on historical weather, and on average there is no solar eclipse :)
  27. offandonagain

    Netzero App

Thanks :) Looks like you'll be on the path of totality, hope the weather is clear and you get a nice dip in solar production. And bump your Powerwall reserve in case the grid has problems tomorrow!
  28. offandonagain

    Netzero App

Netzero doesn't have access to vehicle controls currently. You could create an automation that would bump your Powerwall reserve to 100% when the vehicle is charging, but I'm not sure if that would have the desired effect.

New to this, Tesla energy app a little confusing, need help on MY HOME screen.

Ok, all good then, sorry for the false alarm. It's important that your system is aware of your permission to export, otherwise in some cases you might actually get charged for the energy that you export before PTO. From my experience (2 years ago) you'll get an email from PG&E when you get...

    Netzero App

Emporia Vue is a good product, I use it myself. It gives you better visibility into where your home usage goes -- other than the large loads (EVs, heat pumps), it's hard to tell otherwise. You'll get a better understanding of your base load, find vampire drain, etc. It does mean you'll have...

New to this, Tesla energy app a little confusing, need help on MY HOME screen.

The app usually indicates that it's in pre-PTO mode, and I don't see this in your case. So I would go to Powerwall settings and turn off "Permission to Export" just in case. If the app is aware of pre-PTO mode that option will be disabled, so you can just leave it as-is.

Tesla replaced my MCI units because of poor production in the winter, but now it's much worse.

I'll second that. When Tesla replaced my MCIs, they went from model MCI-1 to MCI2 (specs). They claimed MCI-2 is more reliable. @1SciChick, I'm also surprised they only replaced 3 MCIs. There should be 1 MCI per 3 panels and based on your post (65 kwh/day in the summer months) your system...

Costs are low right now. If that changes in the future (e.g. Tesla starts charging for the API), I'll re-evaluate. I might need to make this clearer: the message you see after testing an automation describes the state you can RESTORE to (i.e. the state before testing the automation). The...

Tesla Powerwall II and Octopus Agile

Yes, Netzero would automatically update the tariffs to track the dynamic pricing, as frequently as needed. Amber doesn't seem to allow API access unless you're a customer, and I haven't seen any public sources for tariffs; I'll send them an email to see if they would consider a developer...

Thanks for the feedback! Yes, the automations run in the cloud (on multiple servers for redundancy purposes), so no need to keep the app running. I'll add a note about this in the app as well.

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

To clarify, I meant look at the Wi-Fi networks reachable by your phone. The gateway might have a label with a TEG SSID, but the network can be deactivated. Right, the passwords for these are behind the glass covers.

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

From what I've seen, in PW3 installations the gateway does not act as the "site controller". Instead, one of the PW3 is the site controller. You can confirm by listing the Wi-Fi networks when nearby. If a network name starts with TEG, it's the gateway. If it starts with TeslaPW, it's the...

Discussion: Powerwall 3 [Speculation / Discussion etc]

Tesla clearly does not want you to have access to that: it's behind the glass cover printed on a QR code. And the cover is not something you want to be removing yourself, because in addition to the safety and warranty risks, @Vines pointed out that the screws are single-use. Your best bet is...

Is the error you're getting "failed to connect" or "failed to authenticate"? Are you on the same wifi network as the gateway? (Powerwall-Dashboard is probably running on a Raspberry Pi that might be on a different network.) One way to confirm connectivity and credentials is to open a web...

What is your highest solar production?

Not meaningless at all, all good observations! Tesla charts are 5-min energy averages that show data in units of power, so like you observed all peaks are troughs are smoothed out. This is especially relevant for bursty home loads, where peaks can be much higher than the charts make you...

Turn off WiFi in Powerwall Gateway?

The TEG network doesn't have access to your home network or internet -- it's a private network just for the gateway. If you wanted to improve security there, you'd have to start by making sure the password and qr-code are not printed on a label outside, and make sure the password is stronger...
