Can I hard reboot without powering off the car?

Bookmarked, thanks. Just curious, why would a battery charger not work? I have a switchable 2A/10A one, I wonder if the higher setting would work.

    36.X and Steering Wheel Weight?

A weight attached to a wheel imparts torque. Having to touch the wheel is what people are trying to avoid.

    36.X and Steering Wheel Weight?

I'm curious, then, what you believe is the reason for these reports of being suddenly kicked out of AP until next drive without warning. As for the camera, depending on the model the steering wheel is not in view: https://teslanorth.com/2021/04/05/watch-tesla-in-cabin-camera-videos-shown-in-color/

Perhaps it's miscalibrated but my sarcasmometer was beeping loudly at @2101Guy 's post ;)

    36.X and Steering Wheel Weight?

If the device had a wheel that rolls against the scroll wheel that wheel could be accessible to roll with your thumb manually. Presumably it would work on either side. Personally I wouldn't want to modify the car's wiring.

    36.X and Steering Wheel Weight?

What might work is a device that goes over the left scroll wheel and nudges the volume alternately up and down every X time.

    36.X and Steering Wheel Weight?

"We haven't bugged you enough lately so you must be cheating" speaks volumes about why people may choose to use a weight :D I wonder if the variability in experiences expressed here is due to how people attach their weights. For example a hanging weight should provide more variation of the...

    36.X and Steering Wheel Weight?

Exactly, having to keep your hands on the wheel is the real problem. On highways I believe having your hands on your legs right next to the wheel and not having to deal with constant nags is just as safe.

Well you know humans can figure out the exact temperature with their eyes so cars should be able to do it too.

Mobile Connector no longer included with new cars [posted 04/16/2022 - Tesla confirms adapter included with cars ordered before 04/17/22]

I would add emergencies. I consider mine part of my emergency kit, safe in the knowledge that if somehow I couldn't make it to a charger I could at least find an outlet somewhere.

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

ha, yeah I did hear even the new ones aren't as responsive as they should be, but that otherwise they were pretty usable. I still have a 2014 Kia Cadenza, top of the line but still terrible!

How is CarPlay 2 irrelevant to a discussion about CarPlay wrt Tesla?
  17. Graham J

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

I'm talking about it :) Of course no car today supports an Apple MCU because they don't offer one yet. Today it's screen mirroring but did you see the interface they showed in the keynote? That's some pretty serious mirroring. I have a hard time believing manufacturers will write UIs for all...

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

Currently, agreed, but CarPlay 2 shows Apple's ambitions go much further. It looks like nothing less than a MCU replacement to me, for manufacturers who can't or don't want to create their own Tesla-level UI. Apple is a hardware company and they have a whole car team beyond the CarPlay stuff. I...

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

This is a quandary CarPlay-supporting manufacturers are going to run into I think. The car needs to know the destination for certain features to work optimally but drivers would like to use CarPlay nav software. Maybe in the future we'll see a car API that lets the software provide the...

Prediction, in Which Year Will New Electric Vehicle Sales Exceed 50% in the United States "Poll"

I think you forgot what we're talking about. I'm saying EV adoption will track inversely with EV pricing. Obviously there are people who will buy them at current prices - like, you know, us. But since a lot of people aren't buying $50k cars I think it's relevant to predict at what rate EV...

Prediction, in Which Year Will New Electric Vehicle Sales Exceed 50% in the United States "Poll"

Of course many consider them but people who are used to buying lower end cars aren't going to suddenly start buying more expensive cars just because their TCO is lower. TCO does help level the playing field but price of car is still going to track with budget in most cases and since EVs on...

Prediction, in Which Year Will New Electric Vehicle Sales Exceed 50% in the United States "Poll"

It would be interesting to see a chart of new car sales vs. vehicle price. What percentage of cars are in the ballpark of EVs or up? Those are the sales that will be converted first. Seems reasonable to assume the rate at which the cheaper ones are converted to EV sales will largely be a factor...

Prediction, in Which Year Will New Electric Vehicle Sales Exceed 50% in the United States "Poll"

I had a thought about this. A quick search suggests the home ownership rate in the US is 65%. We've all been talking about the first 50% of sales but if we assume it's home owners that switch first the second 50% may be the more interesting half. I suspect it will take a lot longer to reach...

    [UK] 2022.24

I wonder if this means each profile will have its own favourites. I would actually rather not have it that way as my wife and I largely go to the same places and I don't want to have to add new ones twice. Maybe when you create one you could choose to add it for all profiles and/or have...

    Enhanced AutoPilot (EAP) Has Returned!

Apparently includes auto-cutoff :D Hard pass for me. All I want is auto lane changing. Or even change via manual signal. Or even auto re-engage after manual lane change.
  28. Graham J

Seriously. What is your max amount you'd pay for EAP?

Options I'd prefer: - $1000 per feature, á la carte - Low monthly subscription ($10-20) per feature - Free, since the engineering for these has likely been paid for and other comparable cars come with some of these features

    software update 2022.16.1.1

My understanding is that the brakes will only activate if you're requesting to slow down faster than reduced regen will allow. That means you can still begin slowing down from further out and avoid the brakes activating if you want to. But if you don't do that and expect the braking distance to...

Is a backup mobile connector necessary?

I wouldn't call it necessarily but it's peace of mind. There are a number of scenarios where it could be useful: What if you get to a charger with a low SoC and it's out of order? Maybe you want to go camping and charge overnight. Or to an AirBnB.

Elon implies Tesla will be worth nothing if L4 (minimum) isn’t achieved

Absolutely. I guess the antithesis of focusing on being a better car company is that once Tesla does have robotaxis will we even be the customers anymore? Maybe they won't need to be a better car company from a consumer perspective. The economics of an autonomous fleet might make things like...

Elon implies Tesla will be worth nothing if L4 (minimum) isn’t achieved

I realize this thread is more about the valuation part of the quote but this is the part that concerns me. IMO the transition to electric vehicles is more important than getting FSD working. I feel they should be placing more emphasis on increasing quality (both soft- and hardware), perfecting...

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

And even if Tesla wasn't a tiny fraction of their userbases, why would Apple or Google spend time developing apps for a manufacturer who refuses to support their car systems? Tit for tat and all that. No, what we should be pushing Tesla to do is support them. It's the only way we'll get those apps.

Interesting Bloomberg article from this morning about how the CarPlay updates indicate an Apple Car in the workds, which they specifically call a "Tesla rival" https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2022-06-12/apple-s-aapl-ios-16-carplay-is-precursor-to-apple-car-wwdc-2022-recap-l4bczhc6

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

Great post. It's interesting to think about the dynamics of manufacturer-Apple partnerships. On the one hand relinquishing control of the UX to Apple makes things easier and naturally draws in Apple's massive customer base, but on the other alienates Android users and hands any future secondary...

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

The 79% number is from the Apple keynote where they said "car buyers" - Tesla was never mentioned. Still sounds high but there it is. The idea is lots of "car buyers" want CarPlay yet Tesla doesn't have it so c'mon Tesla, let's have it :) But it's true plenty of current Tesla owners claim they...

  44. Graham J

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

Yep. Today even cars with CarPlay/AA have to have their own UI too since the phone might not be present. There are some platforms like QNX that manufacturers can use to build that and some have built their own I believe. I'm pretty sure Apple's goal is to compete with those platforms and become...

2022 Apple CarPlay update vs Tesla UI

It may be true that the sampled people are not Tesla owners but 79% of users that have CarPlay saying it's must-have is still a pretty big endorsement. There must be some portion of the perceived benefits that would apply to Teslas. I agree in many cars CarPlay is making up for an otherwise...

    Elon Musk documentary/factual tonight

But a loan is not a gain. Using shares as collateral is a risk to the lender but doesn't enrich the borrower. If the loan provides gains then those gains are taxed.
