It's my understanding that credit cards can be used only for the initial $250 order fee. The down payment is collected by Tesla via ACH. Third-party lenders may have different policies, but I think openness to credit cards for down payments (or even the entire purchase amount) is more common...

It was updated to 8/1 - 8/15 on 7/30, so nice to see it narrowing a bit. That said, there doesn't seem to have been much - if any - movement for those of us near the Fremont factory, so I'm not really sure what to make of it.
