Does a battery ever have a positive ROI with net metering

My ROI on batteries is about 9.5 years at current electric rates (after federal tax incentives, and after solar ROI is reached @ 5 years 7 months). My utility has raised rates twice since I installed, so I can only assume that timeframe will reduce over time. That's just about at warranty...

Annual (temporary) goodbye to grid power?

I drew power from the grid on April 4th, haven't touched it since. Well, other than grid sync. The graph below shows my set of powerwalls charge rate (reserve set to 20%) - April 1st to today. Here's my import vs export graph. This is a cumulative graph - blue line is export and purple...

How long between inspection and PTO? [various areas]

Yes! My install completed on Aug 31, 2022, received PTO on Jan 17, 2023. Ran for about five months before I had to make a payment.

Three Consecutive Perfect Sunny Days - Variation in Output

I have a 20.4kW Tesla system, 51 T400 panels with two 7.6kW inverters. My max daily production (to date) was 137kWh.

Three Consecutive Perfect Sunny Days - Variation in Output

Adding more data. Not trying to decipher specific reasons, just think it is an interesting exercise in looking at variables. Wind speed was pretty close on each day. Wind direction was slightly different... I bet that is a key factor.

Three Consecutive Perfect Sunny Days - Variation in Output

Yes, there were some clouds at the tail end of April 14th, around 6:45pm. Around then I am typically down to 2.1kW production. It probably impacted slightly. I actually seem to have had more high clouds on the highest production day, April 13th, throughout most of the afternoon.

Three Consecutive Perfect Sunny Days - Variation in Output

This is more of a dissertation than a question. I had three perfect, consecutive sunny days, April 13th through April 15th. I know temperature affects solar output, but what about humidity and barometric pressure? The production variations are not very big, less than 5%, but I expected them...

    Overproduction error on Tesla inverter

Yeah, don't think an inverter would run consistently at 165% production. The 7.6kW inverters barely do 125%. Plus, unless you have giant magnifying lenses pointed at your panels, not likely that 4.8kW of panels will produce 6.1kW.

Powerwall 3 set to 45% backup reserve, at 43% now

From my experience, this is normal. My reserve is set at 20%, and on those times I reach that threshold (sometime in the middle of the night usually), by morning the PWs are down to 18 or 17%.

Constant Grid Power Usage Despite plenty of Solar and/or Powerwall Power to cover home load

Amazing accomplishment! Next up? Cancelling Comcast/Xfinity? That'd put you 2/0 into superhero status! That is a long time to go with issues, I can understand the frustration. Glad you got it sorted, and thank you for sharing your experience and resolution. It will definitely help someone...

Tesla Says I Can Only Get *ONE* Powerwall bc of my Utility's Rules

There are bypass diodes in each panel to reduce this. When researching this last year, I found this video helpful:

Tesla Says I Can Only Get *ONE* Powerwall bc of my Utility's Rules

There was several, but one was around how the inverters are designed to run consistently at 125% output. They also said that running two strings in parallel would serve better across the south facing roof. I thought I knew enough, but the wonderful people on this forum have helped me learn so...

    Powerwall 2 Questions

There is not any feedback for the PWs provided from the units themselves. The communication wires to the gateway relate all the PW status. I suppose it is possible to get the green glow if you hook it up and power it on, but I've never done that so can't say for sure.

Tesla Says I Can Only Get *ONE* Powerwall bc of my Utility's Rules

There is the possibility that the installers will alter the plans, not to fit your best energy strategy, but to make for the simplest install. I had shared shading timelapse with my designer who altered strings based on the information I provided. The installers looked at the plans and made...

    Powerwall 2 Questions

Why am I not 100% self-powered? App doesn't take into account exports?

I think something might not be setup properly. Mine is similar to yours in graphs, but it only shows 1% for grid. The 1% makes up for the occasional sync/spike draws.

    Questions about Solar+Powerwall3+Two Model Ys

Just to add here, keep track of what your designer creates vs what your installers will want to install. In my instance, I had provided shading details to the designer and he created multiple stings to accommodate on paper. However, the installers changed the design to match what was easier...

    Questions about Solar+Powerwall3+Two Model Ys

    Tesla Loan Transfer?

@morbidz is right, most realtors will tell their prospective buyers to run away from residual loans, especially solar. Your best bet is to calculate paying it off and asking a higher sales price to compensate.

Powerwall 2 Available Energy After 2 Years

This footnote seems to mark a change to PW2 hardware, prior to March 2019. You could be on to something @jjrandorin Compared with 2017 PW 2 specs: The newer version is lighter, but most likely a change to internal battery types. It also was slimmed down slightly, 2mm in width and 8 mm...

    Powerwall % Degradation

Powerwall 2 Available Energy After 2 Years

My powerwalls all started at just over 15.2kWh at install. At 19 months, they are each between 14.3 and 14.6, so just over 6% degradation from the original starting kWh, but still 107% of warranted capacity (13.5kWh in US). Mine are set to 20% reserve, but typically drain to about 50% at night...

    Tesla App visuals

    Tax Question

My system was installed in August, 2022, but PTO didn't happen until January, 2023. Taking my tax attorney's advice, I went with the installation date. That is the warranty start date, not when it is billed or invoiced.

Is Tesla offering QCells's latest Q.Tron panel?

My experience with Tesla direct is they have switched to mostly using their own T400 series panels. I'm not sure who manufactures them for Tesla, but they swapped out the Qcells with T400s on my install about 1.5 years ago. The installer said they are moving towards the full Tesla product line...

Powerwall Companion - updated Windows app

I'm sure it is collecting the granular data, but only graphing for every 15 minutes. Probably saves them a lot of CPU cycles for their Azure or Amazon hosting, only having to process and display 4 points versus 60 every hour.

Constant Grid Power Usage Despite plenty of Solar and/or Powerwall Power to cover home load

Could it be that the load CTs are pulling wattage from the other non-backed-up panel(s)? Your first screenshot is not showing you pulling from the grid, but your second screenshot is showing you are. I'm thinking a CT placement issue possibly.

Constant Grid Power Usage Despite plenty of Solar and/or Powerwall Power to cover home load

What is your Powerwall reserve set to? Unless they are set at 100%, they should be providing power to the house. It would appear that it is acting like reserve is set at 100%, as you see the grid usage reduce once the sun comes out. However, it should reduce to zero, unless your house is...

It's shocking Tesla does not hand over direct control of their PW in the app.

I'm using the 'dummy' system - I've got a Unifi EV Station, that I set to allow charging from 1:30pm to 5:30pm daily. Typically by 1:30pm my 4 PWs are full and I start exporting. However, if it is a cloudy day, I have this automated process that disconnects the car (it's called 'sneaker-net').

    Powerwall Reset During Grid Outage

You mention a UPS, which may be why your system only increased frequency to 62Hz. The default is ~65Hz, however you can contact Tesla to have that reduced to keep more sensitive devices like UPS from thinking they are still offline. I did that for mine, and my frequency shift is only to 62Hz...

Now possible to add Tesla Inverter to Tesla app

I'm running Netzero, Home Assistant, Powerwall Companion, Powerwall Dashboard. All great data. However, since I have the v2 inverters, string data is not provided, well, except for the first 15 minutes after rebooting one and connecting directly to its SSID. Been considering using a DC Hall...

Now possible to add Tesla Inverter to Tesla app

The picture is definitely the V2, not the +. I'm hoping also that these can be added to provide more details on individual strings (on v2 inverters), but I'm wondering if these have already been added by the installers during installation. Not sure if we can add a second time. I am crossing...

    Powerwall Reset During Grid Outage

I know when you are in an off-grid situation, once the powerwalls are full the Gateway adjusts the AC frequency to somewhere around 65hz, which tells the inverters to turn off until some battery % is siphoned off. Yours changed to 62hz for the first 20-30 minutes according to the graph in your...

TurboTax Delays in Filing for Home Solar Rebate

I am using HR Block, and was in the same boat. However, I was able to file mine after the 2/15 update. However, my energy credit was a leftover from 2022 taxes, not a full install credit. Not sure if that had any impact, but figured I'd share.
  47. Matt-FL

It's shocking Tesla does not hand over direct control of their PW in the app.

My 2 cents - we don't have granular control over our PWs because of litigation concerns. If you decide to set a granular knob that could put your Powerwall somewhere outside of specs, who becomes liable? Common sense would say the person who set the device outside of specs, but, for the same...
