DIY fixing a failed charger in a 2013 P85 and how to fix and prevent failure

Was just quoted $4285 to replace HV charger/distribution unit on a one owner 2014 Model S, 102k miles. It charges on lower 220v and 110v, but not at the superchargers. Wow, what an expensive repair! That, the MCU replacement, and door handles...making me rethink my commitment to EVs.

California renewable energy production with falling demand

So...do you think Duke Energy is missing an opportunity by incentivizing solar but not batteries for nighttime supplement? After all, even their own solar farms are useless at night.

Is Tesla service deteriorating as they scale??

I think you just convinced me not to trade in for a newer model.

Long Road trip with Y or ICE????

I have made that exact trip. For this time of year, my concern would be air conditioning. By myself, its marginal. With other people generating a 98.6 degree influence on the interior with no help from the exterior, I suspect some sweating and perhaps some edgy emotions will be predictable.

    My "Ultra Blue" Model 3

If you are ever in Chapel Hill, NC, you will receive a lot of special reverence for painting your car the color called 'Carolina Blue' by the faithful Tarheel fans.

    The argument *against* a 2nd gen Model S & X

I basically agree that they made a 'perfect' car, so why change the looks. And yet, I think at some point we have admit that there is a little of bit of 'want something different' in all of us. There are 'cheap' upgrades that could be made to keep an iterative styling gradient moving along...

    The argument *against* a 2nd gen Model S & X

Some might argue that Tesla's $180/hr for service work is a lot of 'ka ching' compared to ICE dealers. In my area, service for my Honda Ridgeline is half of what I would pay for Tesla services. Still, to your point, service is not something my Tesla has a lot of need for.

High pitched buzz from front of car and strange battery behavior

I just noticed the same exact symptoms on my 2014 S 85. Did yours turn out to be the coolant pump? I rebooted my car's system, both the display and the car itself. That was a temporary fix.

MASTER THREAD: Tesla Insurance Services in California

Its makes a pretty bold statement when a car manufacturer is willing to bet on its cars against an insurance industry that has far more data points to work with. It is also a little crazy as a business decision. However, I want to keep this positive, for I see a huge positive upside. Many...

Things my wife said about Navigate on Autopilot tonight

Reading through the thread....Somehow 'Autopilot' just became an clinical initiator of espousal associated neurotic hypersensitivity. Lets be real. Even without autopilot, a spouse can be very capable of auto-generating an unrelaxed state of mind. It does not seem to be a unique skill. Its...

Sentry Mode catches door dinger and saves me $1000.

My 2014 doesn't have a side cam, thus no sentry mode. I recently acquired a ding, courtesy of an unknown and perhaps unsavory, low class, poor performing, unethical, degraded, corrupt, careless, and perhaps even scary excuse of a human being. I have no recourse. Some of you have sentry mode...

Would you join the Elon's Robo-Taxi Fleet with your Tesla?

Tesla's stated depreciation/mile for Model S is $1. That is lower than what they offered me in trade, which was $1.10/mile loss of value over four years. This is the Achilles heel. If I allow a new Tesla to be rented out, not only does the mileage rate have to be above $1.10/mile, but it...

    Unpopular Question

These are not cheap cars, so it is expected that their owners would be accustomed to a certain level of perfectionism. And, of course, no car is perfect, not even the million dollar+ models. So, your point is valid to a degree. However, more importantly, I think Elon sometimes assumes too...

Lightweight tape (painter's tape) the door joints to keep the gas from...

Supercharger price hikes: what's your opinion?

Good point. Kind of like double taxation....except we did not get to vote on it. Of course, buying a Tesla is a 'vote'. Still, changing the rules after the vote? I think it is called finances by the seat of one's pants.

I hope Tesla Lowers the Supercharging Rates

Yours is a reasoned response because we all need Tesla to beat the odds and continue thriving. Otherwise, our already challenged resale value would be somewhere south of an Edsel. Still, though I did not buy a Tesla to a make money on it, I did hope to reduce my incremental driving costs...

    Does smart preconditioning work?

Mine is a 2014 S and the only A/C preconditioning I get is if I manually turn it on in the app. One option I wish existed on the nights I am charging is to have the house power pre-warm the battery for my morning commute instead of dealing with the heater sucking up the energy via the car's...

Interesting: Maybe that explains the large number of Model 3s on a used car dealer's lot on South Wilmington Street.

Must be that expensive California air.

US Southeast: I-95 Charging notes for travelers

Went from NC to Port Canaveral Florida: Nov, 2018 Lumberton, NC: Not many bays but not heavily used. Good kW rate. Florence, SC: 20+ bays but in front of the food court of a shopping center. A lot of non-Tesla vehicles were parked there and I had to squeeze in next to another Tesla, sharing...

Daily charging/topping up the battery (even only to 80%) could be very bad

I have no opinion on the technical merits involved in daily vs more weekly charging. One thing that is missing from the discussion is that over time, the charge frequency tends to increase as the total capacity diminishes. Meaning...new it had 300 miles of range, but at 100,000 miles it has...

Blog Tesla Partners With Liberty Mutual for Insurance Program

Try Erie Insurance. Your driving history needs to be really good, and its better if you are using some form of their other insurance, home or commercial offerings. But that said, I got my best quote from them.

Blog Model 3: Is The Long Range Battery Worth It?

Data: 2014 S85, 39,000 miles. Current range charge provides 257 miles. 40 mile round trip commute. 7 trips/year over 200 miles/day. There was some great info for almost every situation in the threads already. The one thing I did not see was the battery life anxiety (not range anxiety) that comes...

    Model 3 customizing?

One thing that any automotive manufacturer needs to pay close attention to is the interior. After all, when you are driving, the interior is a large percentage of the user experience. Other brands are really stepping up to catch and exceed Tesla and some are doing some pretty edgy stuff...

Transferability of reservations to immediate family

There seems to be some confusion on this. I asked about this specifically at the local Tesla store and was told, NO, because it unfairly offers non-owners an advantage in the queue.
