    What's your 90%?

    25,000 miles on my 2014 P85D : 90% = 222 miles. Hasn't really changed much since new.

    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

Here's one that should be easy to fix... and yet. Stop wifi from pointlessly trying to connect to a net for which it does not have the password. If my car is parked anywhere were it might pick up a tiny signal from some random wifi it'll sit there and not switch to LTE, effectively blocking my...

    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

Ok this is a pet peeve of mine for the last two years with my Model S. I have wifi at the house to support faster downloads/map syncs/etc. and it works fine. But when driving around the car will frequently find wifi hot spots and try to log into them, and usually fails of course. The car will...

    Supercharger - Channelview, TX

Yes it does add 1.9 miles for the eastbound folks post-charge but that's not too bad. Just be sure to put on that extra 0.7 KwH when charging. ;)

    Short-Term TSLA Price Movements - 2016

Any thoughts on how long it will take to recover from this -3.5% slam?

    Firmware 8.0

IMHO I would suspect the metal arched street lights could be a strong radar return signature. The fact that it was slowing down at a medium level implies that it was picking up something fairly far down the road which is where those light poles would be in the field of view. Secondly, and I know...

    Ludicrous Upgrade Scheduling?

Yea! Finally got my call and Houston-Westchase will be doing my upgrade on 2/23. They said it should be done the next day. Another data point is that I head at Houston-North that they are doing 8 upgrades/week.

    Ludicrous Upgrade Scheduling?

Great to hear Houston is getting close! I was told the N. Houston SC was the location for the L upgrades. Hopefully I will get a call soon too.

    Firmware 7.1

    A) Agree this blows. B) The clowns on YouTube acting out with AutoPilot are not really to blame. That stuff is inevitable. It's the lawyers that advise Tesla to do this for liability reasons. Lawsuits based on people doing stupid things and wanting compensation from the manufacturer should be...

    Tesla Gigafactory

Exactly. Here we have ample wind farms out west generating 9% of the electricity in Texas. So it's easy to contract for wind energy at $0.087/kwh so my car (and house) can be zero-carbon. Solar may be viable here but it's simply more trouble than the alternatives. It's nice to have your own...

Seriously, this is why I blacklist news sources which demonstrate gross incompetence in reporting technical matters. That statement should never have gotten past an editor. OH YEA they don't have editors anymore.

Good choices. You won't be disappointed.

Why does Tesla use Wh/mi instead of miles per KWh?

Actually I think it boiled down to a marketing decision. WHr/mi is a large number (333 say) while mi/kWh is a small number (3 say). 333 is better than 3 in the reptile brain.

Road-trip updates: SF to LA and back, on electricity. And Autopilot!

This same phenomenon of the car underestimating charge to destination and rerouting effected me a few weeks ago. I was on a day trip to the county which represented about 150 miles round trip. No problem I thought, just take the precaution of charging to 100% and it should be no sweat. Well, at...

Last time I was killing time at the Westchase SC the tech mentioned (in response to my comment about how far it was from Clear Lake) that Tesla will be opening a new SC in the Clear Lake area in 2016. Does anyone hear any more rumored details about location or timing than that?

Second Stenn's comments. The adjustable suspension has other uses like boosting the chassis when driving through shallow standing water. (had to do that two weeks ago) And lowering at highway speeds for slight aerodynamic savings.

    Houston, TX

Congrats! You will love it. By all means stick with the 19" wheels. Only reason to get 21" would be if you wanted maximum performance with the 'P' package. You will have fewer problems with the 19" -- not as likely to get nicked by curbs and less likely to cut the tire on a pot hole, and tires...

    Future Tesla Batteries

When Elon talks about a 20% smaller Model 3 v. S, I'm pretty sure he is referring to mass (being the physics nerd that he is). The 20% reduction in weight of the chassis is easy with dimension reductions. The 20% reduction in battery pack weight is more challenging as it implies a smaller pack...

    2014 P85D Owners... hindsight? regrets?

I have only one regret with my P85D configuration. (That's saying a lot since I had very high expectations for this car being the best car in the world.) It's a relatively mundane one really. If I had it to do over again I would not have opted for the 21" wheels. I've not had such low profile...

    P85D shock issue (air suspension)

Just my experience, but my car was built Christmas week so it must of had this 'stiffer' equipment. Since the replacement which eradicated the sounds, I have not noticed any difference at all. I've been very happy with the car's ride and handing ever since day one.

That's odd. What section of the legal code did you see this? I was looking in Sec. 547.613 and I can't see that. TRANSPORTATION CODE CHAPTER 547. VEHICLE EQUIPMENT

Agreed. I've often wondered though; what about stickers on the inside windshield like inspection stickers. How are those dealt with?
  30. RobinF

    Houston, TX

I too would like to have more IR filtration on the windshield. It's the biggest window on the car after all. But in Texas, Sec. 547.613 makes that a misdemeanor. I don't know if anyone has been prosecuted for using clear film to screen IR though. I just accept the the moderate IR screening...
  31. RobinF

    Houston, TX

The reason the quote was so high is because of your desire to cover the windshield and roof which is not advisable. First of all it's illegal in Texas to cover the windshield so you should not do that. The roof is already tinted down to a 15 level and has IR rejection properties too it does not...

    P85D shock issue (air suspension)

I promised to circle back with the part number for the redesigned struts that I had installed, and Saturday I finally learned that it was indeed a fully different part, not a rev. Part number 6006352-07-A.

Completely agree! Time well spent. The Nissan guys were there giving test drives in LEAFs. It's a shame Tesla is not allowed to do that. We provided about 7 Teslas to Represent. Talked at length with the event organizer Kevin Douglass about the best way to overcome the foolish prohibition on...

    Tesla Gigafactory

Here's an idea Elon would love. (are you listening?) Since the roof will be covered with a huge PV Array, just calibrate a subset of the arrays with a 2 degree different angle to the sun. The energy collection difference would be negligible and that subset would form the letters TESLA and be...

Any integration foreseen with brand new Apple Music?

I agree the logical approach would be for Tesla to support CarPlay(tm) in an app. Although it seems Tesla is a bit adversarial toward Apple these days so they may not bother with it. The media app in model S really does need a refresh.

Does Your Tesla Make You A More Aggressive Driver?

Completely concur with roblab. The mere mortal ICE cars may find my rapid accelerations aggressive, that really is just a conditioned perception. From my perspective I am being alert and de-conflicting my car from others quickly. Of course I have not yet had to explain this perspective to a...

    Supercharging letter from Tesla 8-13-2015

I'm not sure it's the responsibility of Tesla to solve individuals' domicile charging issues. Tesla makes the HPWC (and other options) with the expectation that the new EV owner provision according to their needs. Potential customers should be smart enough to think ahead as to charging their new...

    Supercharging letter from Tesla 8-13-2015

    P85D shock issue (air suspension)

Marc, I have asked for the rev numbers on the struts they put in last week. When I get the email I'll post the info here. Also for more background, my car was built Christmas week and I noticed the rattle on day one. I had the car into the service center in April to have the noise worked on...

    2014 P85D Owners... hindsight? regrets?

Indeed stop and go driving without much sustained speed is going to hamper efficiency simply because a greater fraction of those miles are spent in acceleration. Add to that the energy burden of the AC (energy expenditure not yielding distance traveled will always hurt the Wh/mile figure)...

Even better look (maybe) at the Model 3

Why would they have a rough clay model of a Model X car nearly in production?

    2014 P85D Owners... hindsight? regrets?

I had a P85 on order when the D was announced and upgraded which pushed the build date out to Christmas. I do not regret that in the least. I've had a couple P85's to drive when the beast has been at the SC, and there's no comparing for low end torque and neck snapping acceleration. I don't care...

    Tesla Gigafactory

True. But remember folks lithium is not the supply constraint in LiOn battery production, it's cobalt. I believe Tesla uses the lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) formulation. Lithium is actually pretty common in the earth's crust.

    P85D shock issue (air suspension)

Just got the long standing rattle noise in the rear suspension fixed. It involved replacing both struts (not the shocks).
