I did nothing beyond phyiscally installing the module and trying to initiate the Homelink retrofit. I assume he just remotely bypassed the auth issue to enable Homelink.

I was 100% honest and said I installed it myself using a new OEM part. He was friendly about it and didn't care at all. Your mileage may vary depending on the mood of the service tech I suppose.
