Tesla drops prices on X/S $20k. All colors free. Bye bye resale

Tesla doesn’t set prices, the market does. Buying a new car at the height of a massive bubble is not a “sound financial decision.” Buying a new car rarely if ever is, bubble or not. Blaming an automaker - whose literal job is to sell cars at a price the market will bear - for your bad...

Of course they aren’t needed. They’ve never been needed.

Does a battery ever have a positive ROI with net metering

I guess I fundamentally reject the idea that one is better than the other or that it’s somehow “big solar’s” fault and they’re ruining it for everyone like the word “culprit” implies. Grid-scale renewables would seem to have a very important part in the overall greening of the grid and it’s...

Best Way To Hardwire Tesla Wall Connector with Existing Wires?

A clarification that those aren't knockouts... they're just molded impressions in the plastic showing where to drill... they aren't really any weaker or less structurally sound than any other part of the housing.

GEICO needs to SPEAK with Tesla ?

Is your car at a Tesla collision center right now getting repaired? Anything like this is generally handled directly between the adjuster and whatever facility is repairing your car.

Does a battery ever have a positive ROI with net metering

Of course. But ultimately it doesn’t really matter. We have saturated the grid with solar to the point that prices are going negative during peak production. There’s very limited value to adding more without associated storage and utility rates are of course going to start reflecting that fact…

Vehicle to PhotoVoltaic PV Inverter DC discharger available?

Which they most certainly did not intend to power your home. 👍🏻
  12. ucmndd

Does a battery ever have a positive ROI with net metering

Not so sure I agree with that. Most people have little to no grounding in how electricity works (pun intended) and don't inherently grasp why they shouldn't be paid handsomely for their excess solar output in the middle of the day when the sun is shining.
  13. ucmndd

Does a battery ever have a positive ROI with net metering

You're right, to the extent that you can store and consume it on site. As for grid-tied systems without storage, it seems we're already well past peak financial benefit and the economics are going to get worse. California is grappling with a growing problem: too much solar

    2018 Tesla mode S 100D, Battery health percentage ?!

I think a new X100D was rated at 475km typical when new? If so that's ~7% degradation and perfectly normal. Like I said... until your battery fails, there's no claim to be made. Just trying to be realistic about your expectations. Tesla is not going to replace your battery.

[Help] Finding my 2015 Model S 70D for Insurance

Honestly that looks like a pretty typical spec for a 2015 car. Most of them were optioned out pretty nicely - not a lot of stripper models around from that era. What are they valuing the car at, and what leads you to believe it’s under market value? As for comps, have you looked through the...

    2018 Tesla mode S 100D, Battery health percentage ?!

Then the “dealer” was wrong. You don’t have much choice but to deal directly with Tesla as they’re the ones providing the warranty. For your car it’s pretty simple: Does the car show any alerts or error codes related to the battery? If yes, Tesla will evaluate them and determine if your...

Vehicle to PhotoVoltaic PV Inverter DC discharger available?

There is no off the shelf product that does what you’re describing. The Tesla charge port isn’t bidirectional so you’re gonna have to do some major modification to the HV system to get direct access to DC power from the pack. A whole lot of custom work just to steal some electricity from Tesla…

Model 3 Highland faster home charging

Not charging faster… exactly the same rate. The car just goes farther on the same amount of energy.
  19. ucmndd

What battery cells are in the 2023 M3 LR?

I think it’s actually the opposite. The NMC chemistry is more stable, degrades less, and has better longevity at the expense of some energy density and max charge/discharge rate (similar to LFP).

Recommended TIre Vendors (Not a particular tIre)

While that's true and I generally agree, I'll also third the recommendation for Discount/America's. I've been to probably 10 of their locations at this point over the years and they've all been consistently excellent. Good corporate culture. 👍

Tesla wants to replace my Model Y Standard Range battery pack with an LFP pack

Nah, you’ve got the basic read of it. It’s like 95% dumb luck. “Babying” the battery might yield you like 3% less degradation over 7-10 years, but it isn’t gonna do much of anything to protect against outright failure of the pack. Supercharge early, supercharge often. Live on the edge, charge...

Optimal speeds for recapturing energy during descend and lowering consumption on ascend

If I can sum up your point: Duh. It’s not really related to the point I was making though - which is that regen is not perfect energy recapture and has a significant round trip loss. If you can avoid it via your driving style and conditions, that will always be more efficient. If you can’t...

Looking for current (as of April 2024) info on upgrading 2018 MS (MCU2 HW2.5 EAP, 2024.8.9) to HW3

Looking for current (as of April 2024) info on upgrading 2018 MS (MCU2 HW2.5 EAP, 2024.8.9) to HW3

I think anyone claiming any performance difference right now for basic autopilot functions between HW 2.5 and 3.0 is experiencing a major placebo effect. I don't think there's any reliable evidence whatsoever that the two behave differently in any measurable way. Pretty sure the radar is already...

Model 3 Highland Performance/Plaid Speculation [Car announced 04.23.2024]

2024 Model 3 Performance Announced - Discussion thread post announcement

lol, deception? This is massively hyperbolic. None of the reviews have any performance testing metrics (because they were almost certainly prohibited from instrumented tests). How can you deceive someone when you aren't publishing specs yet?

Why is Supercharger status always wrong?

I think there are some improvements that could be made, absolutely. More frequent updates when actually navigating to a location would seem to be an easy one. It DOES seem to update occasionally... but it seems like it's once every 10 minutes or so - probably not frequent enough to be useful.
  31. ucmndd

Why is Supercharger status always wrong?

Proactively pushing availability updates to millions of cars every time a spot turns over at a site isn’t practical. I don’t think Tesla ever intended for the availability to be a real time metric, just a general busyness indicator. I have noticed if you click the pin it will refresh to current...

    First Tesla purchase turning sour.

No they wouldn't. That's a silly conclusion to draw. Heh, this is one of those good questions to ask before you bid. ;) To put it bluntly, not good. Early Model S packs have a number of design flaws that lead to early failure. Search these forums for "BMS_029" if you want to settle in for some...

How much would FSD cost on my non-autopilot 2018 M3 mid-range?

They’re wrong. The HW3 upgrade is “free” if you purchased FSD. Always has been.

    Unusual loss of charge

This is normal when parking your car under ~20% SoC without charging. My 2016 S did it every single time, “losing” 4-6% within an hour or two of parking at low charge. Many other reports of the same. You don’t actually lose that much energy… just the BMS doing BMS things. Doesn’t seem to be...

Does $2k upgrade from EAP to FSD include upgrading CW 2.5 to FSD computer for free?

HW3 is free if you buy FSD. Always has been. Your leverage statement is backwards though. You have no leverage at all to push for a free computer upgrade UNTIL you have purchased the FSD software package, which requires HW3 to work. Buy FSD, then schedule the computer upgrade. It will be...

    FSD now $8,000. Who's buying?

My last FSD experience was late 2023 when I got a 3 month trial with my Model 3. Maybe the new versions are better. Probably even. But they’d have to be WAY better for me to want to waste my time. I’ve been using autopilot-enabled Tesla’s since 2016 and fell for the Elon snake oil all the way...

    Looks like I can’t have the PG&E plan E1, that’s a problem

If you set your powerwall operation mode to “self powered” it will do everything it can to avoid pulling from the grid at any time.
  44. ucmndd

    Looks like I can’t have the PG&E plan E1, that’s a problem

As for “I’m assuming it’s going to force me to take from the grid at certain times of the day even though I don’t need it”, no, that’s not true. The price varies by time of day but you have no obligation to use energy from the grid at any given time.
  45. ucmndd

    Looks like I can’t have the PG&E plan E1, that’s a problem

If your question is “can I stay on E1 with solar?” the answer is no. Solar customers must move to a time of use rate plan.

Is disabling battery preconditioning now supported?

I assume it just clears the message from the screen based on what you’re reporting.

    FSD now $8,000. Who's buying?

I hear this a lot as an excuse to try it out but I’ve gotta say, there’s just no world right now where FSD is a stress reducer on a long trip. It requires SO much more attention than basic autopilot. Simple AP is a game changer for long drives - stay between the lanes, follow the car in front...
