80 Amp Charing for Cybertruck, Tesla WC Gen 4?

I expect Tesla to beat the competition on specs because the tech is years ahead, but they are also very smart and not wasteful. If they have a cost-optimized 72A charger I would expect them to use it and still beat Ford in miles-per-minute charging due to superior propulsion efficiency. The...

80 Amp Charing for Cybertruck, Tesla WC Gen 4?

I would also like to see higher amperage, but I think few people would take that option because (1) home charging is usually not in a hurry, such as overnight, and (2) needing a fast charge means you have already driven a lot and need to drive some more, so there is likely to be a supercharger...

Recent fire another reason all controls on screen are a bad idea!

Reminder that the driver of the vehicle: 1. Initially fled the scene of the incident; first responders were not able to contact him until hours later 2. Issued public statements via law firms on each coast within hours of the incident 3. Falsely claimed that he was trapped in the car and "could...

Cyber truck will be the best selling vehicle ever

I'll be replacing my Prius with a Cybertruck. Is this an aesthetic upgrade? Downgrade? Lateral move? Tell us what you think in the comments. Be sure to smash the "like" button and ring the bell for notifications!

    Hummer EV

WOW WOW WOW. Good job, Doc! A good friend of mine had a black metalflake civilian hummer (98 or 99, before GM took over and started messing with things) and it was a blast. No good on the freeway, to be sure, but an absolute joy for stomping around a farm or a small town. Ehhh... I think one...

I always wanted an H1. Still do. Hummer EV isn't working for me (except for the lunar theme, LOVE that). I do want it to succeed, though.

It seems like the new S has a wider track (and wider body) on all trim levels. Is the X widened by the same amount? Anyone have the details?

Elon: We can reduce the length 6+ inches

I'm in love with the cybertruck it the way it is now. I don't care if I have to park outside in the snow. This is a monster truck, after all. But I wouldn't mind a shortened two-door 8-foot-bed version (dimensions like a Ford Bronco) in a few years. My only concern about the current dimensions...

Scraping noise mysteriously came and went

Yes, actually. I used to work in a place that had very fine gravel for its driveway/parking--think like the tiny colored rocks at the bottom of a fish tank. They would get caught somewhere in peoples' brakes from time to time and the noise was horrific. Loud, metallic milling noise. I saw this...

Just announced. 500k cars by 2018 instead of 2020

If they hit 5000/wk by summer, that's a 350k/yr annualized rate (including S/X). Then it would be easy to imagine hitting the 500k rate by the end of the year. We'll see.

Still worth getting a Model 3 if Electricity costs more than Gas?

I do use a clothes line XD. Anyways it's totally worth getting the 3 even if electricity costs more than gas. Home charging convenience, performance, style, the environment... Then get some solar panels ASAP.

First Model 3 motor failure reported

Yes it is. But i'm referring to the inverter, which has no moving parts. I'm also leaving the bearings out of the true motor parts list because you can design a motor without them or they can be external to the stator/rotor assembly. I should go take another look at that Model S motor cutaway...

First Model 3 motor failure reported

And yes, the drive unit contains all three major pieces (on S/X at least). They just unbolt the whole system and drop a new one in, then send the problem unit back to the factory for analysis.

First Model 3 motor failure reported

David: The noise almost certainly can't come from the actual motor components or the converter (which has no moving parts). It could only be from bearings or the gearbox and i'm 90% sure it's actually in the gearbox. Would love to know if any insiders have the scoop on that. Bearings do...

[Poll] Given the Trade-offs, What's the Minimum Acceptable Range for a Tesla?

Can I drive to Grandma's house two states away with only 200 miles range? Yes I can, using superchargers. As long as they keep building more superchargers I think people will get more and more comfortable with reasonably "medium" EV ranges like 200. I did.

    Discussion about production Model 3 #1 (SN1)

Anyone else notice that the steering wheel is narrower than the prototype ones we've seen? That's all we can see of the interior from these pics. Hood gap (or lack thereof) looks like it might have been intentional on the other prototypes.

All cars need falcon wing doors.

I think they'll eventually iron out the details of the FWD and they'll become a multi-product offering-X and Y. The Y might be sufficiently high-volume for two versions, though. There's also the possibility that a future sedan will have regular gullwing doors (single hinge). Or that they'll...

    Picking the right color

What about your wheels? My experience (YMMV) is that the white S makes the 19's look too small, while they seem to look fine with other colors. I don't know why white makes the body seem "thicker" to my eyes. If you're planning on the 19's, I'd recommend a darker color. White is my personal...

Be honest: is SCing on a long trip annoying?

Stopping on a very long trip is a nuisance even with and ICE car. Stopping at a supercharger to be reminded of the benefits of your free electric mobility can be positively glorious. Depends on the station, really.

The logic behind over the air upgrades?

A few reasons. 1. Tesla isn't interested in taking back old, used 60 kWh battery packs that still have plenty of life in them. They already have a battery shortage and designing a car to require two battery packs during its lifetime is a good way to sell fewer cars. 2. People who are willing...

An Idea for fixed battery replacement cost - Tesla please read this

Because they expect the cost of batteries to fall significantly but they aren't sure precisely how much, a reasonable "guarantee" price quoted today would have to be higher than the price they expect to offer at some point in the future. This could make them look bad without providing any...
