Power out - now I know why we got Powerwalls!

FWIW, we had another power outage yesterday. Power was out from 7 PM to 6AM. Powerwall powered everything as planned. We were only one of two houses on the block with lights last night. Looks like the same issue as earlier. The exact same number of customers were out as last week...

Smart of you to test these procedures out before you are dependent on them.

Power out - now I know why we got Powerwalls!

I worry about those issues also. Especially since the big shortages are likely to be in Sept/Oct when the Red flag warnings occur and the winds and/or fires shutdown the powerlines and/or spike usage. And when my solar production will be down. Since we have 2 PWs anything more we add would be...

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

Thanks. I am on the original $2/kWh plan. Do they only use the original plan when the new one is not filling the shortage?

I am not familiar with that program. I am in NorCal on PG&E. Maybe this was a SoCal only event.

185 Teslas flooded last week in Miami and the battery replacement is $20,000!! Help please

Agreed. A flood repaired EV will always have a big black mark on it in the resale market.

Tesla Virtual Power Plant in CA

I saw no discharge on Thursday. Is there any way to see if there is something wrong with my settings, or perhaps they just did not need that much power.
  8. J

I just got PTO email from PGE, but now I dont know what to do exactly.

I belong to the VPP in PGE NorCal. I am on NEM 2. You set limits about how much power they take during a VPP incident. Therefore, you control how much you send to the grid versus what you reserve for your use.

Power out - now I know why we got Powerwalls!

With respect to the internet, that is a concern. We were out for about 5 hours yesterday and the internet stayed up the entire time. We have Comcast (or whatever they are these days) cable service and they seem to have good backup power supplies. Previously, we had a 2-day power outage when...

Power out - now I know why we got Powerwalls!

Good points. We were sitting in 76F indoors while it was 95F outside. When you are working and trying find and fix some nasty bug you would pay a lot to not deal with the heat.

Power out - now I know why we got Powerwalls!

I think we lose power maybe twice a year. However, once it was for 30 hours. And our metrics are not just based on cost since we are running a business from home. We have to evaluate things like waste of time setting up alternative and business disruption impact. A few hours of this can eat...

Power out - now I know why we got Powerwalls!

Hi, We just had a power outage and the power will not be up for 5+ hours or so according to PG&E. My wife has to give a video presentation in 2 hours and the demos are on her desktop computer. Is she panicking and running to move her presentation to a device and then run to Starbucks? Nope...

    SpaceX Internet Satellite Network: Starlink

If they have the cable TV Comcast boxes in the area, they can usually trench to your home pretty quickly. They when 1/4 mile for a relative of mine in a day or so. But it would be so much better if they had been putting fiber in the trench instead of coax.

    2024 or 2025 Model X?

I have a 2022/23 X and have not had a lot of issues. The biggest one is rattling noises. It seems to happen most when the car is cold and seems to be a wire loose behind the driver display. It usually goes away when the car warms up. Other than that, the car is a dream to drive. Quick and...

    SpaceX Internet Satellite Network: Starlink

Could be. But family members on fiber nearby see symmetrical up/down speeds, for less money. I was thinking, but don't know, that it was a cable plant issue since this cable infrastructure is old, circa 1970/80s. It was state of the art back then, but a lot has changed since then. I stop and...

If they want to upgrade the system, I would do it. It usually results in a better performing or better supported replacement.

It has been there for a month or so. I wonder if it is now a matter of getting that much power to the site. 24 X 250-350 kW at max load.

The Good the BAD and UGLY experience Of Cross Country Trip

On our older Teslas, we replaced the 12-volt battery every 2 years or so. They seem to go from OK to "replace me" to dead fast at around the 2-3 year mark. It was easier to replace the battery and not worry about it stranding you. We have the newer battery in the new X and approaching 3 years...

    Deliveries of $80k X?

It appears to take obstacles into account. I park my car near a post in my garage. It has never opened my door into the post. When I pull the car out of the garage the door opens all the way to 1/2 way open.

Used X Plaid or New Model X LR

I would go with the new LR unless you really have the need for even more insane acceleration. And people that have Plaid are more likely to drive their vehicle a bit harder.

Could the Government work with Tesla to install a Supercharger on post? Maybe at the PX. Bases I have visited had gas stations, why not chargers?

is Registration fee $750 in California?

Correct. It is partially a function of car value which decreases over time. I believe you see this mostly in the license fee.

parallel universe: assume $ is not an issue (gas, payments, etc.), would you still insist driving MX/MXP SUV over say BMW X7 SUV 100% fully optioned ?

I have owned 3 X series BMWs. They were nice cars, but each had their flaws, ranging from excess tire wear, noisy vibrations, to failed turbos. Obviously, the turbo is not an issue for an EV, but I prefer my Tesla Xs over the BMW Xs. FWIW, one of my children owns the last BMW X (am X3 with...

Annual (temporary) goodbye to grid power?

What are the specifics of the NBCs for Nem 2 documented? I did not see good examples on the PGE site. Also, a bit concerned about wear on Powerwalls with Self-Powered and can't seem to find any data on that.
  41. J

Annual (temporary) goodbye to grid power?

Interesting phrasing. For the past month or so we have not had any net draw except on days when it was cloudy. So I am happy we are connected to the grid, That connection gives us credits we use in the late fall and winter and gets us a live check when we send power back to the grid during...

Gummi Plege will help with the squeaks. You may need to reapply it after a while. We used own BMWs and bathed them with the stuff every few months.

    Tesla X - suspension issue

The car is warrantied for the actual components not adjustments like the alignment. However, Tesla always gives you are cost estimate for repair work. If they do determine a part failure is the root cause they will likely replace it under warranty.

Supercharger - Pleasanton, CA - Hopyard Rd (under construction Dec 2023, 24 V4 stalls)

Pretty much done with construction. Now PG&E needs to connect it up. Lots of V4 chargers!!! Options for charging from various sides and front in. Or front and back on either side. Nice Long cables!

    Super charging temperature really high

I read that 40C (104F) is the idea pack temp at start of charge. But when charging the battery will get hotter as the cells heat. As long as the cooling system is a working property you should be fine.

(MXP) I cannot decide between black and cream interiors (out is no-go from the boss), is black monotonous?

I had cream and liked it. It does not show dirt like white. We have black in the 3 and that is fine but gets a tad warm in the summer.
