Light Harmonic speaker HONEST review and install

Congrats on stepping on the crazy deadening side. Remember that loudspeakers have a break in period until the sound is as designed. For me the advised waiting time before coming back for DSP tuning was 1 month. However, running hours of the speakers count. I agree the difference is not...

    Rial Lugano lugs

I've been using the same nuts that came with the car on Slipstreams in 2017 (newer open design) on my Rial Lugano winter wheel set. I asked the wheel dealer about correct lug nut shape (round or cone), as I had concern in the beginning. Especially when new, the torque felt "soft" towards end...

Light Harmonic speaker HONEST review and install

When you're taking the door card off for LH installation, it is not much more effort to add dynamat. Definitely see the effort to remove the black plastic cover with a door module on the inner sheet and dynamat between metal door sheets. Don't go crazy on adding material wherever the door card...

Light Harmonic speaker HONEST review and install

I have done now all areas that are relevant for deadening, and some that I found are not so. I did the project bit by bit and got crazier along the way. Started with standard audio. I first installed (day 3 of ownership) the LH speakers and deadened the doors with alubutyl similar to Dynamat...

Light Harmonic speaker HONEST review and install

I have 4xLH speakers, excellent amp with DSP, separate amp for subwoofer and custom built highish-end subwoofer done and all tuned by award winning professionals after break-in. I've done also a thorough deadening project. If I'd have to pick one, I'd do the deadening. Main problem for audio is...

2013 Model S Front Bumper Damage

That "black area" aka. nose cone pulls right off can be replaced with a new one for a reasonable price. Just pull it hard and directly away from car. So you're kind of lucky. I got similar hit on refresh bumper and it cost 2000€ to repair, though it was covered by insurance. Just a little...

Model S Floor Mats (Suck) - Any recommendations for replacing?

Double checked in case I need to replace the mats. Mine are actually ebony color and match perfect with black interior where floor is dark grey. Driver's mat comes with retrofit safety hooks. They were so expensive that I've used cheap chinese all weather bowls on top of them almost all the...

Model S Floor Mats (Suck) - Any recommendations for replacing?

Lloyd Luxe mats are ones like you'd expect to come with your car. Black color matches black interior perfectly. Shipping and customs made the mats double the price in EU.

QQ on what this door plug is, and ideas to hold door trim in.

When working with the door cards, I've been able to do everything without cutting that piece of nylon strap you mention. Just unplug connectors if needed and leave the door card resting on the strap (and something like a cardboard box from below). I'm sure it is a PITA to replace since you'll be...

Am I crazy for wanting to put Turbines on a new Model S LR?

Fully agree and have pretty much same situation. There's such a huge difference between Slipstreams (which mine came with) and Turbines (which I bought this spring). Model S was designed with Turbines, and it shows. Silver Arachnids look great too on MSM, but I'm not a fan of dark rims. If you...

Model S - DIY UHFS Audio Upgrade - This may be a far shot

I bought an inventory car in 2017 since it had all I wanted except UHFS and had a 15% discount. Figured that aftermarket installers typically do a much higher quality job than car companies for the same money spent. When I replaced standard speaker elements with Light Harmonics, noticed that...

    Integrated wireless charging in cubby

Here's another way to do wireless charging, which I did a few years ago. This option enables using phone as a 3rd screen. Facelift Center Console Wireless Charging Modification In fact, nowadays you can buy above modification as a ready product, so I wouldn't bother DIY unless you enjoy the...

Loud clicking noise from drivers door

WD40 is a dissolvent, and it is good for cleaning metal parts. Its temporary lubricating effect wears off quickly, and I think it somehow hardens/dries rubber parts over time. You would want to apply something inteded for lubricating (grease, graphene but no silicone) or suitable for rubber...

Put cycle rack on rear of Model S?

I wouldn't be so worried of the weight if were talking about light road cycles or similar. But. I think that type of rack is intended for a vertical tail gate. Would you be able to ensure the pedals, handlebar etc. wouldn't touch the car especially in case of emergency braking or speed bumps...

Can't decide between P3D or Model S, halp!

If you secretly want a Model S but are going for the 3 for ”sensible” reasons, you’ll most likely end up regretting not getting what you wanted each time you see one in traffic. Think about it. I would hate to drive a new car and not be 100% committed to it. Model 3 is likely better value, but...

Buying a Tesla with quietest cabin

I have 2017 MS with a full glass roof. I made a full roof cover made of sound deadening foam and black felt, with purpose of improving in-car acoustics, two summers ago. I thought it probably made a difference, but I did many other things to deadening around the same time. Later, I took it...

    Creaking headliner

A pillar panels have one screw under the airbag plate, otherwise they just pry out. You’ll need vinyl prying tools and a bit of practice and confidence. Always pry directly outwards from panel, never bend while prying. There is a youtube video on how to do this on Model X, and it is almost...

    Creaking headliner

Does it sound like it could be a loose wire touching styrofoam insulation? I had that, but coming from the passenger end of headliner. I found a fix when taking off A pillar panels: there was some excess wire (10-15 cm) routed through passenger side A pillar up to the headliner, which enabled it...

Why does Tesla use a Resistance Heater instead of Heat Pump

I will try to document if I’m to make another revision of it. I can second @dgpcolorado comment on solid roof. My friend has one, and we contemplated insulating and deadening it, but when we peaked under headliner, we concluded it is already reasonably well done from the factory, and not worth...

Why does Tesla use a Resistance Heater instead of Heat Pump

I've done that as part of my project, with main motivation in improving car audio. It came out better than expected. Could have used OEM alcantara if I had known it works so well. Upper layer is reflecting and strong aluminium paper. I glued closed cell foam on it, and upholstered with black...

Why does Tesla use a Resistance Heater instead of Heat Pump

Well, some of us also drive mainly from warm garage to warm garage. And if heating up is done plugged in, insulation surely improves heating performance, perhaps even more than a heat pump could. I have a free idea for Tesla (next one costs a Roadster): have a team of SpaceX engineers design an...

Why does Tesla use a Resistance Heater instead of Heat Pump

More than a heatpump (which has marginal gains in specific temperature range), I would like Tesla to improve insulation on cars. Adding a layer of insulation to cabin would work in all conditions, and would also benefit in cooling and road noise. If you strip down the interior, you’ll notice...

    Anyone else have a dieselgate?

I have one 2.0tdi with CBAB engine code rusting in the yard. In Europe, they provided an apology and a mandatory service call to the owners, nothing else. Guess if I'll do business with VW or VAG ever again. Hit on car value from dieselgate was 20-30%. Positive was that they gave me an argument...

Vibration sound in plastic cover over instrument cluster

Yes, apply a bit of sound deadener material on the parts, and a bit of felt tape on touching surfaces, for a permanent fix. I've done the same for the whole dashboard while wrapping the woods. It also improves audio due to less resonation in mid-bass.

Car Suddenly Won't Go To Sleep

Yes, I guess the car OS becomes unique combination over time especially as the updates seem to be incremental patches judging by the size of them, and full refresh happens only maybe with full version change, if ever. More over, us with older MCU1 gear are probably no longer the focus of...

Car Suddenly Won't Go To Sleep

@wdolson how do you define IC sleep, just by it going black? My 2017 S90D started to put the IC to a deeper sleep mode since a couple of updates ago (28.3 now). When I sit in the car, the IC has Tesla logo still for 5 seconds or so before it’s ready. It used to be ready by the time I’m in the...

    Hakkapeliitta R3

It’s not the dry asphalt, but the temperature. Around +10C (50 fahrenheit) they start to really melt. Age is worse for rubber which is designed to grip by friction than miles. All weather tires can take heat, but they just don’t perform when going gets tough, it’s a bit of worst of both worlds...

    Hakkapeliitta R3

I’ve driven MS RWD with Nokian R3 in extremely slippery weather, and I was surprised on how well they performed. They are also some of the softest and quietest winter tyres, maybe more silent than my Goodyear Ultra Grip Ice 2, which are also good tires. Both of these have done well also in 3rd...

Mercedes video released today re new EV

I saw one of these near my house. In silver it looks like any 13 in a dozen SUV, except I find the mandatory EV weirdmobile grill they call ”black-panel”, hideous. Is there a an easy, quality solution for a quick swap of the speakers?

I wish I documented everything, but I never planned to do as much as I did in the end. And for a first timer it took plenty enough time without documenting. In fact we’ve done now almost all the same to a friend’s Model S, which has been interesting comparison between facelift AWD and a...

Long commute question, SR+ vs LR vs S 90D

AP can indeed see lane markings better in the dark or blizzard or rain than a person, but if the lane markings become covered with snow, AP refuses to activate. However, AP is a real safety improvement for those early morning gray road gray sky gray rain commutes. I believe Model 3 loses a...

Long commute question, SR+ vs LR vs S 90D

I’m driving similar distance (185km one way) to an office location maybe once a week with a 2017 90D. In the summer I can do it with one charge with 10% remaining back at home and speeds up to 120-130kmh. But it needs 100% charge which I rarely want to do. Charging at the other office is not...

    Rattles? These ended mine.

Some of the clips Tesla uses should be replaced anyway if a panel is removed. E.g. Door panel clips gave up after a few removals. Another tip is to add felt tape to all surfaces where the panels or clips meet. I spent 5 meters in a few millimeter pieces mostly on dashboard clip openings. A...

New soft closing door kit for Model S

Yes, Dynamat is one of best known brands for deadening butyl sheets coated with aluminium. Also, if you’ve ever considered upgrading the speakers, that’s the time to do it. And adding a softer layer on top of the dynamat does wonders (e.g. dynapad). I got second thoughts on the winter...

New soft closing door kit for Model S

Looks absolutely doable DIY. While at it, I recommend deadening the front door (both interior metal and the plastic panel) with alubutyl product and a closed cell foam. That alone upgrades the feeling of the door, and it is so easy as you have already taken the panel off. In the end of the video...

Clicking noise from dashboard in front of passenger side

Probably this. Reason for sound is that the physical contact which should indicate to the step motor to stop is not being recognised, so the motor just runs the flaps against the boundaries until there is a timeout. Model S is long in the tooth

This is how subjective the whole noise topic is. Some feel that difference between 19 and 21 inch wheels is night and day, and Raven measures quieter with 21s than earlier cars with 19s according to a couple of youtubers. However, tone of noise is almost as important as volume. You might get...

Is there a an easy, quality solution for a quick swap of the speakers?

Based on experience with S: best bang for buck and a fool proof improvement is to dampen selected body panels. You can do relatively little by only changing speakers. I went in 3 stages: swapped speakers with little result, added actively equalized amp and sub with some improvement, and finally...

Model S is long in the tooth

Didn't Raven suspension upgrade address road noise and comfort remarkably? What else are you expecting? Most road noise transfers from suspension to body and panels and from there to cabin. I’ve done quite extensive extra sound insulation on my S. I’d rather even pay for that job done...

    Software Update 2019.16.x

I got 2019.16.2 a few days ago and 2019.16.3 last night. NoA is nowhere near ready here. Today it missed a ramp where it had plenty of time to make a lane change or suggest one. Even funnier was that it took another ramp earlier which was not even close to the correct route, but I let it go...

New regulations in Europe - Update to 16.2 or keep 12.x?

Steering limits come into play only at very curvy roads at some speed, in my opinion in situations which would be slightly unnerving on autopilot anyway. Model S range and interior update imminent?

I’ve removed door trims several times. There is nothing behind the lower part of trim. A small to medium pocket would be easy to fit by just redesigning the plastic. Large pocket would need redesigning the inner door sheet metal. Not having door pockets is a design choice. I’m fine with that...

Facelift Center Console Wireless Charging Modification

Aliexpress is cheap but most vendors are very slow, also the shipping can take 5 weeks from China to Europe. Anyone who finds this thread now: building this DIY is no longer worth it as the Chinese copied the idea (obviously ), and prices of the off the shelf products have come down a lot.

Facelift Center Console Wireless Charging Modification

Yes I did if driving was more sporty than normal, but it would be easy to modify so that there is a good cradle for the phone to hold it down. I’m no longer using this as I don’t need the screen for waze.
