    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

I would like to see a navigation/map feature where you can discover approximately where you will be at given time... e.g. on a journey you need to stop to take a meeting or other activity, where you will need to stop at a specific time. I often drive about 300 miles in the late afternoon but...

Scroll wheels and other UI items misbehaving with high cabin temperatures

My 2016 S 90D is exhibiting odd behavior from the scroll wheels. If the cabin temperature gets around 85 F or higher the scroll wheels stop working. Also the on the control screen the charge door cannot be opened unless I select the charging screen from the top menu and select the "open charging...

    Vendor CAC is King

I just took a look at my battery with SMT. this is the screenshot of the CAC I guess this is pretty good? At 2.5% after 153000 miles and 6.5 years

I got SMT and it shows a 12 mV difference at 17% SOC

MCU2 uses soldered eMMC memory too. My MCU1 failed and was replaced with a 'refurbished' MCU1 without charge. However the refurb was so slow as to be impractical. Sometimes the navigation would take 20 minutes to compute a route!. I stumped up for an MCU2 replacement so Tesla got the money anyway.

I see it is now available for iOS.. I'll post an update after scanning maybe next week.

I don't have SMT.. I watched TeslaBjorn using it on his YouTube channel but haven't got it yet.. I don't have an android device but I'll check again to see if it is available on iOS

    Lifetime Average Wh/mi

I have just over 150,000 on my 2016 90D. I have averaged 287 Wh/mile. My battery has started to show signs of problems over the last few weeks but nothing that has stranded me yet. The battery held about 80 kWh for the last 5 years or so and in the last month it has dropped below 70 kWh. Not...

Supercharger - Atascadero, CA - 900 El Camino Real (under construction Jun 2023)

Looks like construction is complete… waiting on PG&E would seem plausible.

Great Pic's. Unfortunately not much has changed. I went by there today around 7:00am and it still looks like that.

Tesla slashed prices by huge amount for all models, feel duped

I don't think you're annoyed about the price cut, you're annoyed by the time lapse. I bought a Model S in 2016 for $95k. they are much lower now yet I don't feel scammed or annoyed. the difference is the time! How will you feel in 2 years when the price of raw materials may have doubled and the...

    Tesla App Safety Score

It worked on my app for a while then it 'black screened'. I have Tesla insurance but I'm in California, so the premium is, as yet, unaffected by the safety score.

    Crash Rates

CA Hwy 99 is probably not the most dangerous road. Most serious collisions in the US occur on rural roads. Hwy 99 has it's share of trouble with fog and truck/vehicle collisions, nevertheless despite the high number of problems, it also has a very high 'vehicle miles travelled'. As with most...

Blog New Autopilot Feature Keeps Cars in Passing Lane

Staying in the left lane is mostly an American problem. In California it is against the law to stay in the left lane if the right lane is clear, and there is a following vehicle "Notwithstanding the speed limit".... CVC 21654. On the other hand I cannot say I have ever seen this law enforced. In...

MCU Upgrade for 2016 Model S with AP1

My MCU just failed (April 2016 90D, AP1). The frustrating thing is the app cannot connect to the vehicle, thus scheduling a service and getting service updates is not possible. I went through the phone route and spent time on hold to get a phone rep to schedule for me. The appointment was a...

1 million Teslas by 2020 - what does it take?

I don't know about 1 million model 3's, but TSLA must be closing in on 1 million vehicles produced. My guesstimate is 250k MS 600k M3 150k MX. Are there better numbers? Just curious.

7 years later what is your 100% on your 85kWh battery?

My April 2016 90D now has 86,000 miles (138,400 km) and 100% charge states: 263 miles (423 km) of range vs 285 miles rated when new. I rarely charge to 100% as 90% is always sufficient for my purposes. I mostly uses the superchargers from 20% to 75%, and top off to 90% at destination chargers.

    Software Update 2019.8.x

I got another update this week to 2019.8.5 3aaa23d. Now the browser issue appears to be fixed and it's working a lot better. Also the release notes are visible now.. Essentially for this AP1 vehicle it added 'Dog mode' and updated the GUI layout of the climate controls.

    Software Update 2019.8.x

I got 2019.8.3 da116a6 on my 2016 pre-facelift 90D. I see the climate control GUI layout changed, and 'dog mode' was added. The bad news is that the web browser is now virtually unusable, as it much much slower. I use the browser mainly for the Chargepoint destination charger app. When I enter...

Tesla Plans Software Update to Cater to Campers

How about an electric camper? Nissan are doing a NV2000 based camper but only selling it in Spain :-(. In the US most RV sites are already equipped with NEMA 14-50 outlets at each space.

    BBC Autopilot video

There are some unknowns here. I have not been able to discover what AP following distance setting the Chatham people used. From the video i am estimating that it's a little under 2 seconds. If the Tesla had been following with a 3 second gap, the vehicle would have probably stopped before...

    BBC Autopilot video

This was shown on the BBC and on CBS news yesterday. The video demonstrates a situation that the Tesla advanced driver assistance features (Autopilot) cannot deal with alone. Braking distance concern by Consumer Reports

I wondered about that too, and found that in some jurisdictions you can only start a left turn if the exit path is clear. In the UK. (turning right) you will fail your driving test if you start the turn before you can see down the road you intend to turn on to. The sweeping turn, which you often...

Braking distance concern by Consumer Reports

It's not just pure reaction.. it's the time to make a decision too. The best everyday example is to observe the front vehicles at a red light. when the light changes to green, the alert driver will move in under a second, but most exceed a second, and sometimes it's 2 or 3! The study at Monash...

Braking distance concern by Consumer Reports

Nevertheless, those 20 ft misses were more likely down to your reaction time than the actual braking distance, if the speed was less than 60 mph. At 60 mph a 1/3 of a second extra time to react would have used up nearly 30 ft. Whats more, this issue is of increasing importance as braking...

Braking distance concern by Consumer Reports

Hi Sharkbait. You should check on those following distance requirements! Three seconds is the recommended following distance by global best practices. Depending on which state you live in, over 55's can get a 15% (mandated) insurance discount if they take a driver improvement course. It takes a...

Braking distance concern by Consumer Reports

Agreed! :) I would like to see why the first test gets 130 ft or so, and the subsequent tests are worse.

Braking distance concern by Consumer Reports

The Highway code in the UK does that very thing (accounts for reaction time and publishes an overall braking distance). I agree 20 or 30 feet could make a difference, but if a driver hits the car in front, that driver was travelling too close! When the driver reaction variation could be 66ft to...

Braking distance concern by Consumer Reports

What annoys me most about braking distance numbers is they leave out the decision and reaction time of the driver. Monash University in Australia have shown that a typical driver will need 1.5 seconds to make a decision and get their foot on the brake. 60 mph = 88 feet per second, thus it takes...

The Rules of Model S Road Tripping

Great post! I would add on the subject of drafting that a 3 second following distance should be observed. 1 second is less than most people assess and react (studies show it's closer to 1.5 seconds). Travelling less than 1 second behind another vehicle virtually eliminates any chance of dealing...

    Tesla Battery Replacement Cost

I think that once the long term degradation picture is known we will start to see replacement options. The Tesloop vehicles run 10-15 k miles per month and have a number of vehicles over 300,000 miles. Tesla swapped out at least one of those to look at the wear-out progess. From the reports I...
