Enabling Supercharging on salvage Tesla Model X

Very interesting. Thanks for your perspective. This definitely improves the value of salvage vehicles, especially in states like CA with a robust third party charging network.

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Not directed at you. IMO your posts have been fine even if we disagree some :) I was talking about the folks who claim that no one should question Tesla's changes. I think all good-faith criticism should be welcome without prejudice.
  3. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

I don't know why you have to use pejorative terms like closed-mindedness. Skepticism of change is healthy, especially when there are obvious downsides that have not been addressed by Tesla. Not all innovation ends with good results - I've seen plenty of duds in my time and I'm sure you have too...

    Is Yoke Steering Wheel legal?

There are two things in question: 1) Turn signal / gear buttons on the steering wheel 2) Yoke-shaped steering wheel I think Ferraris confirm #1 is legal, but as far as I am aware no Ferraris come with a yoke out of the factory.

Enabling Supercharging on salvage Tesla Model X

Oh I didn't realize that superchargers had network access. I thought all the communication was done on the car side. Interesting.

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

I don't think I'm being unnecessarily pessimistic. I am taking all the currently available information and thinking through how it would work. Let's take your hypothetical solution - how would that work if you were currently in drive and needed to reverse for some reason? It would have to be in...

Enabling Supercharging on salvage Tesla Model X

I have a sort of tangental question - when a car has disabled supercharging, is all DC fast charging disabled or just at superchargers? Could you in theory charge it at chademo (or CCS when the adapter comes out) fast charging stations?
  8. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

This is the image from the Tesla website of the new center console: I don't see where the gear selectors could be in that photo. The hazard lights have to have a physical button by law, so I don't think the gear selectors could be capacitive on that strip. Unless they're even further below...
  9. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

I must have missed that there would be a non-stalk selector. Do you have a source on that? I don't see one in any of the renders, and Elon specifically said the override would be on the touchscreen, so that's what I was going off of. I don't see how you could turn that feature off without...
  10. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Thanks for this reasonable post. It does seem to be a polarizing issue, presumably based on your faith in Tesla to deliver an automated solution. To date, all of Tesla's self-driving features have been driver-activated (not counting things like emergency braking), so the driver has always had...

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Again, you've failed to address my concerns in any meaningful way and instead doubled down on insulting me and claiming I don't know anything. All while you ignore my points and type useless platitudes about how self driving will one day be better than humans (duh). That's not a constructive...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Yes. Here are some higher end BEV SUVs coming out in the next few years: Rivian R1S, Bollinger B1, Hummer EV, Mercedes EQG, Porsche Macan EV, updated Audi e-tron. Of course those will have their pluses and minuses compared to the Model X, but I will certainly be looking into all of them...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Speaking for myself here, but I'm assuming this applies to others as well. In the past I was willing to accept these sort of things from Tesla because they were the only EV game in town. My number one priority in a vehicle is that it's an EV, and Tesla was the only company that could meet my...
  14. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

When true FSD exists I will be happy to have the car select gears for me. However, at this point, someone has to control the vehicle, and automation can lead to complacency. In a situation where something works 99% of the time, people will become complacent and not check the selected gear. This...
  15. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Not sure why you're being so defensive and rude. I am perfectly happy with my Tesla right now, and I am well within my rights to criticize features or design choices that I don't like. I'm not sure why that seems to offend you so much. And what exactly demonstrates an inadequate grasp of...
  16. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

The comparison isn't between myself and a vision-based system. The comparison is between Tesla's complex, error-prone design and the cheap, effective, ubiquitous rain sensors that other OEMs use. And I strongly doubt a generic vision-based solution will ever be better than a purpose-built...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Even if people can afford the extra $10k that doesn't mean it's worth the money. People are right to complain when there's a price hike and no significant improvement in the product, regardless of how much money they have. Also, the "no competition" thing will only be true for another year or...
  18. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Unless Tesla changes the way it currently works, your car will not learn anything. The neural net is static - it's not going to learn your driving habits. It will be up to the data scientists in Fremont to update your cars' behavior. Also, a failure rate of 1% is orders of magnitude too high...
  19. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Nope. Bad ideas are bad ideas, regardless of the quality of the engineering team. See vision-based rain sensors as example #1. It's entirely possible for Tesla to have amazing engineers AND poor design decisions.
  20. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

The correct way to do this would be to have a shadow system predicting which gear the driver will engage, and then collect data and learn from that. It's not appropriate to take away driver controls in anticipation of FSD, when FSD is years away from being a reality.
  21. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

People don't like this change because it doesn't add any value. It takes a microscopic amount of effort to change gears with the gear stalk. Literally just a 0.2 second flick of a finger. Instead, they are replacing that incredibly simple and effective system with an overly complex and...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

I'm honestly surprised there hasn't been a class action lawsuit against Tesla at this point. How many thousands of people paid for FSD back in 2016-2017 and still haven't gotten anything out of it besides a gimmicky summon and auto lane change?
  23. D

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

True FSD (as in level 4 autonomy) will not exist for at least 10 years. Until then we will just have varying degrees of driver assistance. Don't believe the hype - Tesla has been saying FSD is just around the corner for years now. Remember when Elon said there was going to be a fully autonomous...
  24. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Apparently there will be a manual override somewhere in the software menu. At this point no one knows exactly how you will override the car's decision, but I can't imagine it'd be as easy as a stalk. Imagine trying to parallel park on a busy road, or doing a 3 point turn, or backing out of a...

    Is Yoke Steering Wheel legal?

I hope the US regulations follow what is safe and don't bend over backwards to allow crazy designs from manufacturers. If they determine the yoke steering wheel and automatic gear selection is safe, then go ahead. But Tesla shouldn't just get a pass on this without a thorough safety review.

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Yep, I will be shopping for a new vehicle at some point in 2022. I think the R1S will be my main consideration outside of a new X.
  27. D

Why is the newly announce X have lower range?

I'd guess when driving the MCU is significantly clocked down to reduce power draw. No way you need that much processing power just for some maps, music, and control displays.

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

The question is whether or not the additional features are worth the perceived $10k price increase. It seems like for most in this thread they are not. We will see what the general public feels in the coming months as these start to get delivered.

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

I think it would make more sense to have the yoke be an option for plaid vehicles, since the people buying plaid care about performance. But for me, 90% of my driving is through city streets and trafficked freeways. A yoke without stalks does not add any benefit in those situations, and arguably...
  30. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Yep, this exactly. I guarantee you there will be tons of accidents where someone is assuming the car is in one gear, hit the gas, and realize it's going the other direction. Once people get used to the car selecting the gear for them, they won't bother checking to see if it's right.
  31. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Anyone who's tried to use auto park or summon will realize that the car selecting the gear for you is a terrible idea.
  32. D

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Elon has a habit of over-engineering things that don't need fixing. See the the rain sensors as a prime example. Why spend all that effort to create a vision-based rain sensor (that doesn't work super well) when a cheap, universally-available component already exists? Or the overly-complicated...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Very hard pass on the car guessing which direction I want to drive. That is not something I want to leave up to software. Especially considering how well summon and autopark work.... It literally takes less than half a second to select the gears right now, and it's very intuitive and tactile...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Assuming you're moving to the Augusta/Bangor area (based on the 3hr comment) I see 8 CCS fast chargers between Bangor and New Hampshire on I-95. Most of those are 50-100kW but there's a 350kW charger in Portland and one in Seabrook, NH.

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

By the time the R1S comes out (late 2021) the EA network will have hundreds more stalls across the country. It's really expanding at a fast pace. If you haven't checked out their network recently I would recommend you do so. Just at a quick glance there are plenty of DC fast chargers in both OH...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Other people have said they got an offer to keep the order for +$8000, which would be $2000 cheaper than ordering today. I wouldn't expect much more than that.
  37. D

New design - With no stalks how do you change directions or signal?

Agreed with all of your points. My major concerns are: 1) What happens with a digital gear shifter when the OS crashes? I've had the MCU crash a number of times, I'd hate to get stuck in drive because of a software bug 2) How seamless is it to shift gears? Try to imagine doing a 5 point turn...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

My priorities, in order, for any EV are: 1) Range 2) Ride comfort 3) Controls / handling 4) Interior features So... #1 is objectively worse #2 is unknown, maybe there will be some additional soundproofing? That would be nice. #3 is worse IMO, the more I think about it the more I don't like...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Not a deal breaker but will make me consider a Rivian a lot more. I don't want a crazy steering wheel in my family SUV. I want to be able to turn on windshield wipers and turn signals easily. Also not sure why the range dropped. None of these changes would really significantly increase the...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

Really don't like the yoke steering wheel. Also don't like the lack of stalks - I hope they figure out a better way to turn on windshield wipers than what's in the Model 3. The three screens are awesome. Love the back screen. Video games in the rear will definitely be a hit with kids. Can't...

Tahoe Road Trip - Range Concerns in Snow

Don't go to Tahoe this week. The Sierra are getting a historic amount of snow (over 100 inches forecast) and I guarantee you that I-80 will be closed down. This is not going to be some fun little jaunt in the snow, it's going to be an extremely hazardous situation that you should not enter...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

I think you're misunderstanding me. The bulk of the model Y's efficiency (and model 3's) comes from their motors, BMS and aerodynamics. On top of that, the Y has a heat pump which further increases efficiency. Heat pumps are not new or fancy technology. To install this heat pump, they designed...

Most companies are not 5 years behind Tesla with batteries. In fact it's impossible to make that comparison because most companies are sourcing their battery supply from third parties (i.e. Panasonic and LG). As you said, it's important to track who is sourcing adequate supply and who is not...

Major 2021 Model X refresh pending [Update: Unveiled January 27, 2021]

You really think the octovalve is the reason for the Model Y's energy efficiency? Not the motors, aerodynamics, or BMS? The octovalve is cool but it's a marginal increase in energy efficiency at best - its value is more in production efficiency and reducing the size and components of the heat...
