Powerwall / battery storage: can you share how you use it with UK energy tariffs?

Thanks @Mark_T, I’ll give that a go. I have a similar setup with Zappi, Octopus etc. I haven’t tried the Tesla Custom Integration yet. I didn’t know Powerwall was not subject to Fleet API.

Powerwall / battery storage: can you share how you use it with UK energy tariffs?

Hi @Mark_T, can you share which Home Assistant Tesla integration you are using, and perhaps the automation rules? I was just reading this, and it’s getting rather involved now the older API has been deprecated. https://github.com/alandtse/tesla?tab=readme-ov-file#tesla-fleet-api-proxy

[UK] Report that Tesla not going to produce low cost “Model 2”

Robotaxi and a cheaper Model 2, would seem to be orthogonal products. Surely they have the engineering capacity to do both? They’ll need cheaper vehicles - or serious price cuts on the current line-up - to counter new vehicles from other manufacturers and to increase the TAM

    UK FSD Discussion

It will be interesting to see if Robotaxi comes with a different sensor architecture. LIDAR seems unthinkable for Elon, but I expect more cameras and in different locations to ensure full visibility with zero blind spots. And a new Autopilot computer is almost certain, for more compute...

    UK FSD Discussion

I haven’t watched many FSD beta videos. Does it seem like it performs better on USA highways, than the phantom braking that is often seen on UK motorways? I’ve pretty much given up on seeing FSD in the UK, but I DID expect (hope?) autopilot to get better in the UK as a side effect. It feels...

Powerwall / battery storage: can you share how you use it with UK energy tariffs?

As I understand it, I would have to give up the deemed part of my FIT payments to benefit from export during saving sessions, right? We made about £35 from the Octopus savings sessions, by er, just saving energy 😄

Powerwall / battery storage: can you share how you use it with UK energy tariffs?

Don’t we have a contract setting out the terms and duration of FIT and deemed payments? (I do appreciate governments can basically do what they want 🙄)

Powerwall / battery storage: can you share how you use it with UK energy tariffs?

One more question 😁, has anyone measured or calculated the degradation of their Powerwall battery? I see the warranty guarantees 80% capacity at 10 years, depending on mode of operation and energy throughput

Powerwall / battery storage: can you share how you use it with UK energy tariffs?

I take your point that cheaper alternatives are available. However I don’t know if the differential is quite that big… I’m seeing 15kWh Fogstar for £3000, 30kWh for £6000, with an inverter and installation to add on. (And I don’t know much about other inverters!) Powerwalls can be installed...

Powerwall / battery storage: can you share how you use it with UK energy tariffs?

Thanks, that is certainly an interesting option! We’re getting between 3500-3800kWh per year; relatively old panels and some shading, so maybe £540 at 15p/kWh export. We’ll be getting a little over 7p/kWh deemed this year, I think. So in the region of £125. If we didn’t self-consume any...

    [UK] 2024.2

I agree. 2024.2.8 was horrible for auto wipers today, in a variety of rain conditions. I spent most of the time having to toggle between continuous and auto. I sure hope this isn’t the improved wipers that was mentioned on X… I also had a bad lane change abort for seemingly no reason. Sigh.

Powerwall / battery storage: can you share how you use it with UK energy tariffs?

Thanks for all the replies! I'll have a good look at Intelligent Octopus. Two Powerwalls certainly seems to be common! Not sure I can justify a second PW - total cost would then be in excess of 10 years of our current electricity bill... maybe I need some different man maths ;) A few...

Powerwall / battery storage: can you share how you use it with UK energy tariffs?

Hi, With the VAT rate now nil on battery storage, I think a home battery may make now (almost!) sense for our household. I’m leaning towards the Powerwall. I was considering the Givenergy AlO, but after spending some time on the Givenergy forums I’m concerned by their long-standing SOC / BMS...

    [UK] 2023.38

I drove 2023.38.6 on my Model S today and experienced very poor recognition of the gantry reduced speed limits on the M1. It was late morning, with some spray and drizzle but not terrible conditions by any means. I’d estimate it didn’t adjust for about 3 out of 4 of the 60mph signs. ☹️ And...

    So… Highland is out…

There will be an image processing step before the camera data reaches the neural networks. This should mean the core neural networks are somewhat isolated from camera specifics.

    So… Highland is out…

I haven’t been following Highland news very closely. There was talk - and marketing images - of a front bumper cam, but that doesn’t seem to be implemented?

Autopilot is getting worse, not better.

I think they do use simulation for autopilot training, and presumably testing. It was mentioned in one of the AI days or something - there’s videos about it. I doubt Tesla are missing some procedural step. I think time has shown that Autopilot is just very difficult for them to achieve...

    [uk specific] Software 2023.32

PS: one of the most annoying examples I’ve found is when a car overtakes you and then Autopilot brakes, sometimes even if the overtaking car does not slow… You’d think a car ahead and moving faster than you would be less of a “threat”
  22. squarepeg77

    [uk specific] Software 2023.32

I agree that the 2023.32 branch had been very poor for autopilot and TACC. Hopefully Tesla are tracking autopilot usage and disengagement stats and so will know there are issues in the UK. The silver lining might be that these problems indicate an upgrade to the neural networks has made it...

Model S MOT Recommendations? (North London)

I've used Apsley MOTs near Hemel Hempstead for the past two years. It's not a fancy place, but convenient for me and I've had two passes. I've taken the MOT guide from Tesla website as a print out to help them with the settings, but they are getting (more) familiar with Teslas

    [UK specific] Software Update 2023.26

2023.26.6 has changed the speaker balance for sat nav voice prompts on my Model S. It now comes from the very centre of the dash. Before I think it used to come more from the driver’s side / A pillar. Has anyone else noticed this?

Holiday on the Isle of Wight - first time using public charging points!

I was on the IoW back in October 2021, out of season, and had a tough time with the public charging. Hopefully it has got better since then. The stupid BP chargers at Asda Newport took an age to start the charge from the app and then wouldn’t release my cable. After about 20 minutes of messing...

This is why Tesla Vision is not yet ready for Autopark and Summon

I’m still surprised a company would build millions of cars that are supposed to drive themselves, but they put the cameras in the wrong places and have large blind spots. (Yes, I know a human driver has blind spots...)

Ripple Energy: "shared solar" -- views?

I’ve invested into Derril Water, at about 50% of our current electricity usage. I agree the projected returns are not very attractive compared to other investment opportunities, but I think part-funding a new solar park is worthwhile. Calculating returns over such a long period is obviously...

    Autopilot raised at PMQs

Normal “dumb” cruise control would seem to be at risk in any legislation that would ban Autopilot. With lane keeping and steering wheel nags, Autopilot is probably safer. Yes, auto lane changes are still too unreliable. I almost never use it to pull back alongside or in front of a lorry, or to...

How concerned are you about the warranty (or lack thereof)?

Given the Tesla trade-in / WBAC quotes for my 2018 75D (£26-28k!), I’ll be keeping mine for the foreseeable future. I haven’t taken an extended warranty - coming up on 10 months of self-insurance - and so far, so good. 🤞

Random delay when charging - New 2022 charge point regs now in force

If this random delay also applies during daytime hours (and it seems that way) then the Zappi starting charge according to solar export will be impacted. That will be tedious on days of intermittent sun and clouds. I can see it makes sense to stagger charging start times at key off-peak times

    Powerwall versus Givenergy batteries

Today I received an update quote for a Givenergy system - I had been waiting on pricing for the 9.5kWh battery. What started out as a £5000 quote in March for an 3kW AC inverter + 8.2kWh battery system became £6800 for similar 9.5kWh system. And when I asked for an updated quote for the “gen...

I have free supercharging, but with Octopus Go a £3 cup of coffee at the services costs the same as 40kWh of off peak charging. And the 7kW charging rate should be better for the battery, better for the grid and at a lower carbon intensity as it’s off peak. So unless I (personally) need a stop...
