Model 3 - BMS_a174 - Unable to charge, Disconnect and retry error

Hey sorry just saw this. Sure, I've been supercharging this thing a lot as I have free supercharging and use it for our family trips (bought back in 2018) so I've gotten my money's worth out of this car! ;) Probably about 75% SC, had about 80k miles when it failed? FWIW haven't had any problems...

Model 3 - BMS_a174 - Unable to charge, Disconnect and retry error

I wish I had investigated as thoroughly as you! I do think it's odd. The issue only emerged when I rebooted the car during supercharging, between 2 software updates. The latest update had no release notes, so it was a quick fix. Current version 2023.12.9, so it happened on the prior release...

Model 3 - BMS_a174 - Unable to charge, Disconnect and retry error

Perhaps this may helpful for anyone who encounters this. From Tesla service notes: "Replaced Fast Charge HV Battery Power Switch". Cost me $785. Ouch. Fixed the issue, though. Back to supercharging.

Crickets out here. No one has experienced error BMS_a174?

Model 3 - BMS_a174 - Unable to charge, Disconnect and retry error

Recently got a BMS_a174 "Unable to charge, Disconnect and retry" error on a 2018 AWD M3 while supercharging. I was pretty low, around 8%, charged up to 27% or so. Saw new software update notes, was fiddling with the new "Search" section at the top. Saw the new text size option, and when I...

    Supercharger - Santa Maria, CA (LIVE 18 May 2022, 20 V3 stalls)

Went over and charged for a bit in my 3. Was already over 50% so it wasn't fast! Started off at 100 and dwindled to 70's pretty quickly. Assuming that's mostly a function of my charge state and not anything to do with the chargers. Also, noticed a few Teslas plugged into the J1772 stations...

Odd. Shows up in my cars too. I'll try to drop by today or tomorrow and actually charge!

The long wait appears to be over! Showing up on the map in the app.

    Supercharger - Santa Maria, CA (LIVE 18 May 2022, 20 V3 stalls)

By any chance do you recall how long the delay was between activation and it appearing in the app or in the car nav?

    Supercharger - Santa Maria, CA (LIVE 18 May 2022, 20 V3 stalls)

I don't think so. I live within the range where it would appear on the map in the Tesla app, and it's not showing up yet. But, that might mean it's just not active in the app yet. I see Arroyo, Pismo, etc., but not this one. This one sure seems to have taken a looooong time. PG&E backlogged on...

I wonder how many of the people unhappy about V11 are really trolls

Absolutely. My first drive with V11 and an alert for tire pressure pops up while I'm driving. OK, swipe's gone. Hmm. Maybe the little alert is a button that will display the current tire pressure so I know if I need to stop immediately or top off next charging stop. Hmmm... nope, not a button...

    Supercharger - Santa Maria, CA (LIVE 18 May 2022, 20 V3 stalls)

Looks like it's almost ready! Photo from 10/14/21. Fence removed, some equipment still covered up, and a black band still attached to each charger. 16 on this side and 4 on the other (not pictured). Threw in a photo of one of the J1772 chargers as well.

Missing Superchargers from in-car nav map

It was cleaner before, and was also a great demo for friends and family who don‘t understand how extensive the supercharger network is. It’s a game-changer. If you‘ve had a Tesla for awhile you tend to forget how much misinformation is out there regarding range and charging. For what it’s worth...

    Supercharger - Mojave, CA (EXPANDED Dec 2021, 6 V2 + 4 V3 + 2 urban stalls)

Yep. The new ones are still covered as of today (8/10/21). Also, seems like Tesla could have had this paved. As Doug mentioned, pretty goofy given how Mojave is a pretty key stop for a lot of people heading east. Have been to a decent number of superchargers over the past 4 years and this is...

Missing Superchargers from in-car nav map

I agree with you - I preferred the old format. Same behavior here on a Model 3 AWD. Tried to reenable it but thus far haven't found the setting (if it exists).

    Supercharger - Santa Maria, CA (LIVE 18 May 2022, 20 V3 stalls)

Swung by today. Fenced off and construction was underway. Spoke to one of the guys who said it could be a few months. Some boxed up equipment marked “Tesla Energy” were present. Good to see it moving forward!

Was just there - wish I'd stopped and checked it out. Really looking forward to this one! Per documents originally posted by SMAlset: Looks to be the portion of the garage fronting East Main. Now only if they would upgrade Atascadero... 😉

    NEM metering on account (SCE)?

FWIW I'm on the same basic setup (SCE Prime, 7 kW system, 2 Powerwalls) and my monthly minimum charge varies from $12-13 in the summer months to sometimes $23+ in the winter months (excess attributable to taxes/fees on usage which are a few cents per kWh). My total cost for the year (on month...

    Storm Watch not charging!

Same issue happened to me just now. I had enough battery to get through the night (80%+) and yet Storm Watch wanted to pull during peak. I repeatedly tried to turn it off and kept getting the "Failed to save Storm Watch setting". Most settings occur fairly quickly for my setup, so it's odd...

Solar with SCE TOU-D-PRIME vs. TOU-D-4-9PM

As I understand it, not initially. After the first year, when you get paid for the actual excess kW you generate, you get a credit applied to your bill that will then offset the NBCs. At least that's what I believe... but I haven't gone through an entire year yet, though I expect to generate...

Solar with SCE TOU-D-PRIME vs. TOU-D-4-9PM

So I wonder if you net produce, they'd hit you with the minimum charges which are about the same as Prime. Unless the NBC's offset the minimum charge.
  23. schrodarkian

Solar with SCE TOU-D-PRIME vs. TOU-D-4-9PM

:) My actual home usage is 900-1000 kWh / month. The 356 kWh was just what I pulled from the grid, and the 95 is the amount that wasn't offset for the Jan - Feb bill.
  24. schrodarkian

Solar with SCE TOU-D-PRIME vs. TOU-D-4-9PM

@troptop One more question. Did you net produce that month?

Time to cut over after grid is lost

You would be wise to have UPS’s for sensitive electronics. I’ve had multiple outages with Powerwalls, and the iMac usually reboots. Otherwise, you might not even notice the interruptions.

Solar with SCE TOU-D-PRIME vs. TOU-D-4-9PM

Yes, my wife's MS charges from about 4 am onward, and my M3 during the day when needed. I can charge mine under the solar profile usually, so that's a win. PRIME's great for EV charging without solar, but if I'm going to be a net solar producer (which looks possible) I wanted to minimize the...

Solar with SCE TOU-D-PRIME vs. TOU-D-4-9PM

Thanks for the clarification. Do you know if the non-bypassable charges (NBC’s) will offset the minimum charge? Or are they counted separately?

    Powerwall Location Options

Yeah I think the issue was that the Powerwalls need some grid energy to precondition in cold temps (e.g., < 50° F), so if the grid is down the Powerwalls wouldn't charge even if solar was available. Charging from solar below 50° F was not listed as a concern when the grid was up. So, long...

    Powerwall Location Options

Great question on the fire. Haven't heard of any catching fire, but it is a large lithium-ion battery after all. If EVs are any indication the problem would be putting the fire out! However, these days we have all kinds of these batteries all over our homes... cell phones, laptops, etc. The...

Solar with SCE TOU-D-PRIME vs. TOU-D-4-9PM

Well I think I answered my own question. Appears that if you're a net-zero solar customer, you'll just pay the connection charge. There really isn't much difference between the 2... $0.395 cents a day for PRIME, or about $11.85 a month minimum, and $0.35 minimum on 4-9, so $10.50. Baseline...

Glad my car charger was not backed up

As to #3: I've had this happen multiple times with my M3. The workaround for me is that I discovered that if I cancelled charging, and then swiped off the M3 to say, the MS or the Powerwalls in the app, it will not start charging again. If I leave it on the M3, it would just start charging a...

Solar with SCE TOU-D-PRIME vs. TOU-D-4-9PM

Solar with SCE TOU-D-PRIME vs. TOU-D-4-9PM

All, Unfortunately I lost SCE's TOU-D-A rate plan some time ago. My choices now are TOU-D-PRIME (which I'm currently on) and TOU-D-4-9PM. I just received my first NEM 2.0 bill. Happy to say it's only $18.09 due today, and $4.17 added for year-to-date charges. Not bad for February...

    Powerwall capacity not utilized?

Yep! Section 48 is commercial, 25D is residential. It seems the law is much clearer for commercial. “Placed in service” for residential has been interpreted to mean different things. Some have told me it’s when you get PTO, but that seems absurd since you’re waiting on a utility to get...

    Powerwall capacity not utilized?

I think they have different standards for residential vs. commercial projects. From what I understand the “construction underway” test applies to commercial only. Thanks as always to our government for making things clear. o_O CA SGIP is worse. Spent a little time trying to understand that...

    Powerwall capacity not utilized?

I realize that an "I believe" post is worth about the same as a used teabag, so here's what the SEIA says about it. I think they have more attorneys on retainer than me. o_O Per their statement: if you paid for the install in 2019, you're good. If you paid (at least in part) in 2020, it's...

    Powerwall capacity not utilized?

I *believe* as long as you paid in full for the system in 2019 you should be able to claim 30%, not 2020's 26%.

Battery Management System - What I Learned At Tesla Service Center

I've got the type of personality where I'll obsess over this and spend waaaay too much time trying to optimize something that in the long run really doesn't matter all that much. I've watched countless YouTube videos on this, read a ton of threads, perused technical articles way above my...

    Powerwall capacity not utilized?

Yeah you should be able to get more out than me with a 35% reserve. We have the same sized systems. With a 40% I get up to 14+ kW out of the PWs. Usually 10-13 kW. Of course the data is spread over 2 days so it’s not perfect. One cycle would really be the charge phase, then discharge from...

    Powerwall capacity not utilized?

What’s your setting in “Customize”? Self-powered, or Advanced? If you’re on a TOU plan you should definitely check out Advanced. From your graph I would guess you’re on Self-powered. Have you ever drawn more than 5 kW at a time purely off the PWs? For example, by charging an EV? That would...

Buying Tesla Solar - Monitoring Fees?

I had some issues with my contract. Although you sign a contract, they *can* change it if the design varies significantly. Unfortunately they couldn’t really explain the price increase post-contract, and they ultimately agreed to do it for the price on the website. IMHO they need to be more...

PowerWall bundling option gone from Solar Design page

If this is in fact their new approach, one thing you may miss out on is the discount Tesla applied for installing solar and Powerwalls together. That knocked my install cost down by $2.5k.
  47. schrodarkian

PowerWall bundling option gone from Solar Design page

Odd. Wonder if it’s a glitch. You can still order PW’s separately. Maybe it was slowing their solar installs as PW’s appeared to be backordered in some locations?

Alas, it's an electric oil-filled radiator heater we use during the winter for our bedroom. We try not to run the NG furnace at night as it's pretty loud by our bedroom. I'm using Advanced > Balanced. I've set my peak from 4-9 pm (actual peak, 36 cents in winter), and shoulder from 9p - 4a...
