Tesla wall connector to non-Tesla cars?

Just a summary of issues brought up in this thread: Yes, we can modify the Tesla Wall Connector for J1772 Yes, you can connect up to 4 Wall Connectors together on one electrical circuit (15-100 amp) Yes, JDapter Stub also is viable Yes, virtually all Tesla charging equipment is built outside...

    Crazy J1772 Adapter Question

Did they offer a repair 7 years ago (when Blink was flush in Obama Bucks, Nissan bailout money and investor cash?) ? Yes, I think they did. Toyota / Tesla repaired the inlet on my two week old RAV4 EV under warranty. There was a design change to the RAV4 design to make it easier to exchange...

Anyone have experience buying a NEMA Adapter from Tesla online shop

I have purchase hundreds of items from the Tesla online store over the last almost 6 years. The experience can be ok one time, and horrific the next. I wouldn’t even bother trying to call or write, because they rarely respond. If the part doesn’t arrive within a reasonable time, I just contest...

How hard is to replace HPWC with Nema 14-50?

UL doesn’t extend past the wire lugs. Put anything on there that is safe, meets code in your area, and will pass a safely inspection form a government representative. That includes a NEMA 14-50, of that’s what you want. You can find UL listed 14-50 pigtails at Home Depot.

    GBT Chademo. The global standard

The new joint charging standard is called HPC. It is designed to be capable of up to 900kW ! While the physical plug is different than CHAdeMO (Japan) or GB/T (China), vehicles with those plugs will be reverse compatible with an adaptor (similar to the Tesla to CHAdeMO adaptor). The German...

Free Destination Charging: 50x L2 80A Stations @ Caltech, Pasadena, CA

I have a picture around here somewhere of a Roadster charging on “L3”... at Cal Tech. Obviously, the Roadster can be modified to use L3, just like it can be modified to use J1772 or Tesla plugs. They have oodles of 80 amp stations at Cal Tech... we provided them the cables and plugs. With the...

NEMA 14-50 with extension cord vs. HPWC modified with a longer cable?

Yes, we extend HPWC GEN1 and GEN2 cables. The NEC rules about “25 feet” only apply without “cable management”. They don’t want the cables all over the ground. If you have some method to manage the cable (coil it upon a hook), then you met the requirement. There is no specific definition what...

    145kW Supercharging?

Yes, as already stated, the maximum for Tesla cars is 120kW (about 330-365 amps). The maximum output of the v2 Supercharger is indeed 145kW. The Model 3 is capable of 525 amps, according to Tesla, so I expect 175-200kW with v3 Superchargers: For example: 525A * 330V = 175kW 525A * 380V =...

Are we ever going to get ChadeMO?

German cars, like the BMW i3, must have CHAdeMO in Japan (and the i3 does... it’s not an adaptor). Cars sold in China must have GB/T (two separate plugs for AC and DC), and in the future, China and maybe Japan will migrate together to HPC (up to 900kW). You won’t have to worry about CCS in the...

Picture of just about every charging adapter I could find

Your second generation UMC, as well as the first generation UMC, both have a NEMA 5-20 plug available. I don’t recommended mixing amperage. The same is true of the TT-30 adaptor. Use a 30 amp receptacle (either NEMA 10-30, or 14-30). Removing the neutral pin on a NEMA 14- series plug also...

Picture of just about every charging adapter I could find

Yes, Quick 220 can be very convenient, and as you note, it requires a 6-15 adaptor for the first generation 40 amp UMC. I recommend using an adaptor from NEMA 6-15P to NEMA 5-15R, so there is no chance of overloading the circuit. Just clearly mark the adaptor for DANGER * 208-240 VOLTS ONLY *...

Final nail in the coffin for CHAdeMO in the US?

I can guess as well as anybody’s about what any of these companies will actually do, but it’s only a guess. The 6-7 years of “CCS taking over” is pretty obvious that it’s not “taking over”. CHAdeMO just announced, as expected and as I predicted, its 400A * 1000V = 400kW protocol, v2.0. Now...

    Can L6-20 charge at 32A?

Final nail in the coffin for CHAdeMO in the US?

The Germans decided to kludge on a couple of large DC pins to their Menekkes Type 2 plug in an effort to fit any future electrical conductive connection into an existing body panel used for a gasoline or diesel access port. The SAE just rubber-stamps whatever they do. Actually, the SAE just...

Final nail in the coffin for CHAdeMO in the US?

The ongoing “CCS will take over (from its last place position)” is alive and well in this thread. If I were to choose a worldwide standard FROM AN EXISTING ONE, it would China’s GB/T. Of course, it doesn’t really matter why, as folks supporting their brand of charging are sometimes fact...

The 2019 Nissan LEAF e+ will most definitely be 200 amps (about 75kW max).
