How does disabling autopilot for supposedly not paying attention to the road make driving SAFER? Removing the option to keep the car in the lane and alert the driver? Safer? I can’t get over how counterproductive the update is. And frustrating. So frustrating.

Auto pilot disabling does NOT make it safer

Clearly it is unsafe if the driver is not paying attention to the road or to what the car is doing while the car is underway. To reduce the number of accidents when AP is enabled, Tesla must discourage this unsafe behavior. And from what you say their approach seems to be working.

You're right, for that one particular trip when the driver gets kicked out of AP, that drive may be less safe, especially if the driver is inebriated or otherwise incapable of safely driving themselves. But in exchange there are thousands or millions of drives that are more safe because drivers have learned that they have to pay attention.
