Cabin overheat protection question

I have this feature set at 90 degrees. Today, like many others, I turn on my AC a few minutes prior to leaving work. I see the cabin temp is 116 degrees. Wazzup? Is this feature working or do I need service? I suspect it's working because with a black interior it would get much hotter than 116 degrees with no periodic cooling. Anyway, I'm stumped.

I don't know why they have the temperature setting now? It used to be just On or Fan Only or Off. Anyway it's actually useless. 116 degrees is not really that hot for a car interior. Nothing is going to melt or anything so having Cabin Overheat Protection just keeps your var awake and drains your battery running the AC.
