The TPMs will need to be taken to
Discount Tire - America’s Tire soon after the spare tire is put into use so that the sensors can begin to do their job. I’ve also heard that they just start working after so many miles, but I’d suggest having them programmed to begin their task.
You’ve heard of Performance drivers unknowingly hitting potholes or road debris, and getting a leak or a flat. With just 2 inches of rubber between the road and the wheel, its a known risk. What drivers learn after-the-fact,
however, is that the original 20 inch oem acoustic tires are hard to find. In many places you cannot find them, and the best that can be done is to put them on back order as you wait 5 days for them. And if your rim is jacked up you need to either get it repaired or back order that, too.
Me, I like piece of mind. I have two Model 3s. One is a dual motor with 18 inch aeros. I bought a Beemer space saver spare tire that is the same diameter as the aeros, and on trips it goes in the trunk.
I tried the Beemer space saver on my performance M3, and was surprised when the centering ring actually fit, but was dismayed when I spun the wheel to find that the inner wheel was scratching my red caliper in two locations. I could have shaved some of that caliper metal down, and it might have worked, but I decided against it because it was just too close of a margin, and I couldn’t imagine the catastrophe if I hit a rock or curb and bent the wheel/rim and what that would do to my caliper/rotor/suspension/drive linkage.
So I hunted and hunted the forum looking for some 20 inch Performance wheels. The ones I found were primo: no curb rash and without even a scratch. On inspection their only flaw was brake dust. So I bought them, wiped the brake dust off, and took them to Discount Tire, where they back ordered the tires, because the Michelin Tesla 20 inch acoustics are simply unavailable. It took more than a week, but they got the Tesla Acoustic Performance tires mounted and balanced to the rims.
And I’m offering 3 of these as I’m only keeping a single spare. On second thought, I might keep two. Regardless, I’m offering at least two of these prime spare tires so that you can have a spare that you know will fit your Performance Model 3 and that is warrantied for 30,000 miles including full repair/replacement, with a brand new tire and a brand new TPMS.
