Prompted by this interesting OP and Thread dealing with upgrading 2022 Model X brakes to red, "Performance" calipers and/or high-performance parts, I did some further digging in the online Tesla Parts Catalog (for USA models) to better understand what the owners of "Refreshed" (2021+) Models S and X are dealing with (in comparison to "Legacy" Models S & X drivers). (See APPENDIX A for explanation of why creation of a new thread was arguably warranted.) As often happens with research, I am left with more questions than I started with. (But that can be a good thing.)

Even though the original discussion mentioned above was about "Refreshed" Models S & X brakes, it may also be interesting to owners of "Legacy" Models S/X (and perhaps Models 3 & Y), as well. And comparisons among the model-years can be informative. Therefore, here is a tabular summary of selected information about (a) Tesla (mostly aesthetic) "Performance," (b) actual high-performance, and (c) otherwise out-of-the-ordinary brake calipers and pads (taken from the Tesla Online Parts Catalog, April 14, 2024).

Footnotes

¹ As can be true of parts catalogs in general, Tesla part names/language can be inconsistent and/or vague—perhaps because it was written at different times by different people and/or was originally intended for internal use only by trained parts/repair staff.

² Parts with numbers that vary only by a single digit or letter may be similar/compatible--e.g., left or right; black or red; and/or indicating sequential releases over time. Parts with numbers that vary significantly may or may not remain compatible (especially between model-years).

³ Ostensibly, "Over the Counter" parts should be available for sale to any customer. But that may not always be the case, depending on the Service Center. Increasingly, it seems, Tesla policy is that parts are to be ordered via the (phone) App, and parts orders to be reviewed by a regional "team" for authorization, modification, or rejection. (And see Footnote 4.) Still, the online Parts Catalog is available to most Tesla customers. What precisely do "Over the Counter," “Tesla Only,” and “Unrestricted” mean in this context? What, exactly, are the official (Company) rules and case-by-case (Service Center) policies for selling Tesla parts?

Update: "Tesla Only" (TO) appears to apply to parts that (presumably for safety and liability reasons) Tesla does not normally want DIY customers buying and installing on their own. This category includes parts that Tesla feels should be accompanied by thorough inspection and replacement, as needed, of related equipment by Tesla or otherwise by Tesla-certified aftermarket service centers. So these parts may be available for customer cars through the valid repair process, just not directly over-the-counter for DIY projects. In the case of high-performance calipers and pads, Tesla probably wants to ensure that these optional brake parts are installed properly and that associated parts repairs/replacements and software changes are made, as necessary. Makes sense, as brakes are critical safety items.

⁴ This unfortunately restrictive language for red Legacy Models S & X brakes in the Tesla online Parts Catalog is relatively new (to me). Code number X024 apparently signifies the/a "Performance Package" and has been used by Tesla for many years (e.g., at least since 2015). (Thanks to @beatle for Tesla code info.) But what is the significance of the date October 7th, 2019? One could guess that it signified the switch from Brembo to Mando rear brakes, but that change actually happened about three years earlier. Furthermore, why is this restriction only officially codified for rear brakes? (For more on code restrictions, see APPENDIX D, Table 3, below.)

⁵ What is this plate? Judging by the car manufacture date (2019+) it has to be intended for rear Mando brake-equipped cars. Is it the standard outer plate (with "TESLA" decal if installed by that EV Company) present on all (Mando) rear brakes? (I don't think so.) Or is it the new, oversized caliper "cover" that is apparently intended to make Rear (Mando) calipers resemble front (Brembo) brake calipers? If it is the large cover, than this part for Legacy cars is a relatively new development. I could be wrong, but I don't believe Legacy Performance Models S and X originally came with such a large plate/cover (just a standard small outer plate that forms a part of the Mando caliper). Did this cover plate issue (for Models S & X with Mando rear brakes) materialize around the same time as the Performance Model Y brake cover scandal?

Additional Notes for Table 1
  • "2016*" means "from 2016 to 2017." Tesla apparently (gradually?) phased out rear Brembo in favor of rear Mando brake calipers from 2016 to early 2017, I believe.
  • The Part Title, Number, and Status language and CAPITALIZATION are intended to be just like those in the online Parts Catalog. (However, the red color and small italics font were added for emphasis.)
  • For Legacy Models S & X the full online Parts Catalog lists replacement brake calipers both with and without pads/hardware.
  • Respective of performance/non-performance versions, Legacy Models S and X brakes were apparently identical (i.e., the same part numbers were used for both models).
  • And for Legacy Models S and X, performance and non-performance brakes were functionally identical (only the color differed).
  • In my mind, "Performance" (greater top speed, faster acceleration, better handling) was the antithesis of "Long-Range" (more comfortable ride, better tire wear, longer range between charges). Over the years Performance versions (of any particular Tesla model) may have come with (a) more powerful motors, (b) additional motors, (c) larger radius wheels paired with "shallow" performance tires, (d) special software settings, and/or (e) various aesthetic add-ons (e.g., aluminum pedal covers, and red brake calipers). Noticeably absent from Legacy "Performance" Models S and X were actual better-performing brakes--possibly because they were not needed? The OEM brakes were pretty darn good to begin with. (And with regenerative braking Tesla car brakes were not used as often as in ICE cars, anyway.) So unlike other "Performance" modifications (like wheels and tires), red calipers were pretty much all for looks.
Additional Questions
  • Are Refreshed Models S & X front brakes made by Brembo? (If so, they appear to be a similar, but updated brake model.)
  • Are Refreshed Models S & X rear brakes made by Mando? (They appear to be identical to Mando calipers used in Legacy vehicles, except for the color (now black [or red]) and large cover piece. The Parts Catalog, which wisely distinguishes between Brembo and Mando rear brakes for Legacy models, is silent as to the (manufacturer) source of Refreshed rear brakes for Models S and X.
  • Is the "LOGO PLATE & SCREW KIT" actually the rear brake covers that people have been (in some cases angrily) discussing? If so, there appears to be a kit for "Legacy" Models S and X, also (but curiously not identified as left or right).
  • Currently, Models S and X Plaid versions come with "Higher thermal capability brake pads" (presumably at all four corners). However, there are no replacement high-heat-tolerant pads listed for front (Brembo?) brake calipers. So does this mean that regular (Brembo) front brake replacement pads are already adequately heat-tolerant, or can only the rear (Mando?) calipers receive this thermal upgrade? (Another answer might be related to the presence of a Ceramic Brake Pad Kit, also only listed for Model S. In addition, there are both ceramic and high-heat brake pad replacements listed for rear brakes. So, again, why the absence of high-temperature pads for front brakes?)
  • What about the "Tesla Only" Carbon Ceramic (front) Brake Kit (for Model S)? See "Update" under Footnote 4 (above) for more about "Tesla Only" parts.
  • What is the difference between "Over the Counter" and "Unrestricted"? (In the absence of any explanation, I assume OTC items may still be restricted for sale only to owners of certain vehicles and/or in limited numbers, whereas unrestricted items can be sold to anyone in any reasonable number?)

In Defense of a New Thread

I chose to create a new thread because with a detailed posting it is easy (for me) to make errors (or use too many words) that should be corrected later (if/when discovered). Unfortunately, that is not as easy to do in regular entries (postings) within the body of most threads. Sadly, the TMC forums are littered with posts (by me) containing typos and errors (not to mention occasional embarrassments). While authors can use the "Report" button (at the bottom of a post) to request corrections, that increases administrators' workload and takes time to see implemented.

I have likewise added additional appendices to this OP so as to be able to continue to edit content (whereas language in any other post in this thread is "locked" in after 24 hours).

APPENDIX B

Early Legacy Models S & X with Brembo Rear Brakes

Ah, the 'good old days' (2012-2016*), when Models S and (a few years later) Model X had four (powerful) Brembo brakes. (Plus two separate rear, smaller supplemental parking brake calipers, also made by Brembo [as confirmed by @KalJoMoS; see Post #2, below].)

Here is additional Parts Catalog info for "Performance" Models S and X during that period.

Table 2 Footnotes

⁶ According to teslascout.com, "BC0R" signifies "Tesla Red four piston Brembo brake calipers" (color added) and "X024" means "Performance Package" (as previously reported in Footnote #4 for Table 1, above). The distinction between these two codes is real and valid. Over several years Tesla offered the four-Brembo red caliper set as an optional ($2300) accessory for any early (Legacy) Models S/X (capable of accepting Brembo rear standard brake and rear parking brake calipers). So certain non-performance cars may legitimately have all red Brembo brake calipers. (For the curious, more about the sales timing of the optional four red Brembo caliper accessory package here.) One can also imagine that, for various reasons, there may have occasionally been performance vehicles without red brakes, as well.

⁷ OEM Parking brake calipers may have been gray only, even for "Performance" vehicles. (There are currently no identifiably red parking brake calipers listed for Models S & X and optional Tesla red caliper accessory sets did not include parking brake calipers.) Visual evidence to the contrary notwithstanding (see Post #4, below), I am going to assume that OEM parking brake calipers were always gray (except when painted by owners).

⁸ These parts were listed under Model S (2012-2016) only (and not Model X). Possibly an oversight in the Parts Catalog? I assume that the (full; w/pads & hardware) Brembo red rear brake caliper assemblies 1078541-01-B and 1078542-01-B were/are available for both early Legacy Performance Models S and X. Likewise, I assume that both left and right parking brake caliper assemblies (either with or without pads/hardware) were available to both early Legacy Models S & X.

Additional Notes for Table 2
  • Footnote numbers 1-3, asterisks, and explanations as per Table 1, above.
  • Note the lack of any true high-performance brake pad option. (With Brembo calipers at all four corners, were special pads even necessary?)

(More) Notes for the Figures
  • Caution should be exercised when attempting to categorize or identify a part solely on the basis of any line drawing in any parts list for any manufactured product. Experience shows that line drawings produced by some companies are incredibly accurate and can be very helpful in DIY repair work or when ordering parts from a dealer. However, some publicly-available parts lists and accompanying line drawings can be out-of-date, inaccurate, or too vague to be much help.
    |
Unless confirmed by other sources, take any perceived lessons learned from these drawings with a grain of salt. For example, even though the drawings look artistically different, Legacy Models S and X front brake calipers should be identical (based on parts numbers).
    |
  • In the Figures above I added a "?" after "Brembo" and "Mando" for the 2021+ brakes, since I do not know for sure who makes these newer calipers. I assume that the manufacturers are still Brembo and Mando, but until I receive confirmation... (Update: It increasingly appears that the refreshed rear brakes do use Mando calipers.)
    |
  • Meaning of "2016*" as per Table 1.
    |
  • Red arrow added to pinpoint the parking brake caliper in bottom left Figure.

I've mentioned sales restriction codes appearing in the Parts Catalog. I've also mentioned that Parts Catalog language can be inconsistent. Table 3 Notes

I think the (inconsistent; arguably unnecessarily restrictive) issues surrounding red caliper sales restrictions are illustrated in this table. (Restriction inconsistency, it seems, reaches a maximum with the Catalog listings for rear red Brembo brake calipers for the early Legacy Model X.) So I am left with questions, but no firm answers; again considering that Tesla once encouraged (via its online accessories page) installation of red brake caliper sets on any applicable (Models S&X) car.

On the bright side, there do not appear to be any official (codified) sales restrictions for red brakes to Refreshed Models S and X. And objectionable cover aside, I can testify that Model X Plaid looks good with its red brakes. But so, too, do Legacy models.

Very nice effort to gather all information to one place. If it’s allowed then here is one little addition for Legacy S (was it on X as well?) rear separate parking calipers. Although they list the items also without pads, I was not able to get any. The part department said they have never seen them without. So I got with the pads.

...here is one little addition for Legacy S (was it on X as well?) rear separate parking calipers....

Yes, thanks for that. I too am in the process of adding additional "Legacy" information for 2012-2017, when four Brembo brakes were included and the rear wheels had (Brembo--you just confirmed that!) parking brake calipers, also.

Here's a minor thing: I believe that I have seen photographs of "Performance" Legacy Models S/X cars with red rear Brembo brake calipers and gray (Brembo) rear parking brake calipers. Is that the stock, OEM condition? It would seem to be, based on the fact that no red Brembo parking brake calipers are listed in the online Tesla Parts Catalog.

But I also remember having seen a photo somewhere (?) of red Brembo parking brake calipers along with red regular Brembo rear brake calipers. They looked OEM (though I suppose that an owner could have had them painted). And I think I've also seen white ("T") decal kits for the red parking brake calipers. Again, may be aftermarket, not original Tesla.

Any confirmation on the color of the parking brake calipers from owners of early "Performance" Models S and X with four regular red Brembo brakes?

*****

I am not a Brembo brake expert, but having to buy a full caliper (even a small one) when all that's needed is a brake pad rebuild seems unnecessarily exorbitant. Tesla lists a "PARKING BRAKE LINING KIT - SERVICES TWO CALIPERS" (1003460-00-E), that looks from the line diagram to include pads and hardware? Check that part number out.

Found it! Not a still photograph--it was in a YouTube video I saw here.

Sure looks like the red parking brake caliper is OEM Tesla.

This was a 2014 Model S from the U.K., so maybe ten years ago (in Great Britain) Tesla was having the "Performance" parking brake calipers painted also?

Again, thank you for the information you provided. After more careful re-reading of your post, I see now that you were probably saying that you needed to buy new parking brake calipers, not pads per se. In that case, purchasing the calipers with pads included is not only an acceptable (minor) additional expense, but in many instances may make sense.

Also, I believe you are saying that your car always had gray brake and parking brake calipers, correct? Have you ever seen any older ("performance") Models S or X in your area with four red Brembo brake calipers and two red Brembo parking brake calipers (presumably stock/OEM from Tesla that way)?
