    Charging Adaptors 101

No, an average extension cord won't offer enough resistance to cause a drop in voltage that would effect the UMC. It's the temperature sensor

    Charging Adaptors 101

I've often wondered why Tesla's recommend not to use extension cords when charging using the UMC. Firstly. It's not because extension cords can't handle 10a or 15a continuously. They can. I figured it out by accident. I'm staying at a Airbnb trickle charging off the 10amp socket in the car...

    Supercharger - Bowen, Qld

Charged up at the Bowen supercharger today. Thought about posting on plugshare, but since I was the only one there and 5 spare chargers, the only scenario which warranted it would be a convoy of 6+ EV's hitting town at that time... I took my chances. Could be the least utilised supercharger in...

    Superchargers in Australia

I've just driven from Sydney to Airlie beach in Qld, and I've discovered two Tesla super chargers that are about the best I've seen. Firstly, the new one in Thrumster near port Macquarie. I've always stopped as Cassegrain winery before, and its great when the restaurant is open, but lonely when...

2 scooters and a full size spare

If anyone is wondering how you can fit 2 electric scooters and a full size spare wheel in the boot of a model 3.... Then look no further. The secret is to remove the sub trunk floor panel.

    Supercharger - Bowen, Qld

Looks like Mackay SC could be a victim of Elons hissy fit dispensing the entire supercharging team. Means Bowen is kind of orphaned, too far from Rockhampton. I'll be driving up to Bowen from Sydney next week. What's the best strategy after Rocky?. Charge at Mackay, then Proserpine?

Does using Tesla Tyre Repair kit require you to pull the nail out first?

100% on using a tyre plug kit, instead of goo. Those plugs are easy and will outlast the tyre.

    Electric new sales S-Curve

Ive been seeing a lot of analysis that the transition from ICE to Electric cars will take on a S-Curve shape, and 5% EV sales is the tipping point to join the S-Curve, but none of those graphs ever have any X axis... like how many years does the S curve take. Does it need consistent subsidies...

Tesla opening up the Supercharger network in Australia to other brand EVs.

Yeah, in NSW it's the inland ones, which I assume don't get much use. Make sense.

National and State Renewable Energy stats

I wish the mainstream media would promote this stuff (NEM peaked in 2008, and renewables make up more than 25% of energy generation). Quite a big achievement and tick for everything from LED downlights, to energy efficient stickers on appliances, to roof top solar initiatives like grants and...

State based EV road user charge (Overturned 18/10/23)

The people dont want that. We like sprawl, and we like cars. Rather than move the mountain (emulate EU cities), just make cars better (EV's). All most Australian cities need is a move to EV's and increased cycling/ebike infrastructure, and they'd be about as good as they need to be.
  15. G

State based EV road user charge (Overturned 18/10/23)

A per km charge is a terrible tax. Not only because it has no objective, but its an absolute pain to administer. Drivers have to send a photo of their odometer? That sounds very cumbersome and error prone. Very high cost to administer. If you want a tax levy for all road vehicles, I'd focus...
  16. G

State based EV road user charge (Overturned 18/10/23)

Idealistic claptrap. Actually, for Australian sized cities, cars are the best option for transportation. Can you imagine living in suburban adelaide without a car? And the best type of car in cities is a non-poluting, low noice, EV.
  17. G

State based EV road user charge (Overturned 18/10/23)

It has as much to do with the maintenance of roads as a Fuel excise does. (ie, nothing). And since when did a couple bits of stamped metal (number plates) cost $500. Some gouging going on there. Why? They both have no correlation to road maintenance. One is a fossil fuel usage tax. Mostly...
  18. G

State based EV road user charge (Overturned 18/10/23)

Your answer seems to ignore the logic of your preceding comments. Everybody uses and benefits from roads even if you don't own a car. Car owners already pay extras for the privilege of a car such as rego, tolls, insurances, services, etc. The Medicare levy is a flat income based tax. It...
  19. G

State based EV road user charge (Overturned 18/10/23)

That's the simple answer (flat tax). Road expenditure doesn't even closely track fuel excise revenue. Time to end the BS.
  20. G

State based EV road user charge (Overturned 18/10/23)

..for commerce. Joe blow going to visit grandma is not contributing to the bottom line. Fuel excise is a bad tax. It targets the wrong people, and it's revenue is not tied to road maintenance. It's only justification is as a pseudo carbon tax to penalise polluting vehicles. In which case an...
  21. G

State based EV road user charge (Overturned 18/10/23)

Any road maintenance costs are not proportional to the km driven, but the weight of the vehicle. In the current fuel excise regime, car drivers are over paying, while trucks (10x more damage) get a free ride. The electrification of cars is a great opportunity to redress this imbalance...

I camped in my 3 once on my trip to Darwin, at the Winton showgrounds in qld. It was a cold night and just me, so I thought I'd sleep in the car rather than the tent that night. Because the car was full of stuff, I had to shuffle gear into the front seats to make a skinny single bed in the back...

Practical kilometres in a M3 long range

I just saw the Tessie app now measures charge cycles. A cycle is charging from 0 to 100%. If you charge 3 times from 20% to 53%,. (33%),. That counts for one charge cycle. Anyway, I've done 35,000km with less than 100 charge cycles. Tesla batteries are good for 1500 cycles, so should be...

Practical kilometres in a M3 long range

I think Sydney to Canberra is the hard-stick for what range is required by EV's in Australia. I.e. 400km with a bit to spare.
  31. G

Practical kilometres in a M3 long range

Lots of variables. I can get down to 100 wh/km tailgating a truck on a smooth freeway at 105km/hr. And can do 165 wh/hr on an outback road at 100km/hr. You have a good 500km range on good roads, but budget for 400km comfortable, no stress range. I did some analysis on a YouTube video in...

Everything Electric Sydney (February 9-10-11, 2024)

He's a very smart guy, and his message about planning the transition to 100% renewables I 100% agree with,. But his unkept look, his little proletariat hat, and some of his comments are a bit too Marxist and extreme to resonate with the mainstream. He just needs a bit of 'teal-ing' . ;) Just...

I went for an hour and a half today. I'd give it a 6.5 / 10. Scored down because: - no ID buzz, - no cupra born - in fact, none of the big EV makers: Tesla, Kia, Hyundai, VW, ...rivian, ford. - no ebikes. - no real industry experts, just you-tubers. Still worth going, and I'll be there tomorrow.

    New compact tesla

Its also hard to imagine that the cybertruck exo-skeleton will end up being a dead-end technology only for one use-case. Like the 'truck' market, I think the low-end cheapy car market is also open to this kind of innovation. The 'luxury/family' market will need traditional body stamped panels...

Model 3 LR - battery capacity

Great info Ted. I was worried whether my charging habits had any impact on range. Usually charge to 90% about once per week, but did the trip to Darwin last year where I'd charge to 100% most days Didnt seem to make any difference.

Model 3 LR - battery capacity

I never use projected range, and I don't believe it measures battery degredation. My recommendation is to get the Tessie app. It will take a few weeks of calibrating before it gives you a result.

Model 3 LR - battery capacity

In my personal experience, with a Jan 2021 LR (74.5kw). And 40,000km on the clock, my battery degradation is way less than Tesla average, but if adjust the 'starting kw' in Tessie up to 76kw, my degredation then matches Tesla average Suffice to say, Jan 2021 LR 3 could be anyway between 74.5kw...
