CA drivers using PG&E's EV rates?

Local energy storage is great, but still quite expensive (long ROI, unless you have a ton of outages, IMO). As long as you PV generation covers your peak needs, and off-peak rates are reasonable for charging EV at night, you are essentially able to use the grid as the storage system.

Tesla Wall Charger or Nema 14-50?

Can you give more info on your potential setup? Is the potential charging spot in a completely exposed and publically accessible place, more private? Wall connector seem to make sense more for outdoors setup, but there are options for securing your UMC on the exterior as well.

CA drivers using PG&E's EV rates?

I think it's a relatively common knowledge that you don't want to always charge your car with fast charging, as it ultimately affects the longevity of your battery. I would definitely recommend considering home base changing, as it's by far the most convenient way to charge your EV. I dunno if...

    Staying below 100%

You are basically using your own green energy, as long as you generate enough for your needs with your PV system. Not sure why it matters where it stored prior to you consuming it. If you want to be completely self-powered, one PW is likely insufficient.

    # of Powerwall 2's

I have a similarly sized PV system (5.85kw), 1 PW, Model S. One PW is sufficient (as a backup system) for our needs based on the number of circuits being backed up by PW. I would go with one PW, but it depends on your home needs and how much you want to be in the "self-powered" mode. I don't...

How to set scheduled charge to maximize saving?

What he said ^ :) Chances are you will not need to worry about charging past 7AM, but if there are few of those occasions, you can set your charge level a bit lower potentially to make sure you don't charge past the end of low nightly rate. But if you want 100% guarantee, there are EVSEs out...

Mini Solar Charger System to just Charge my Tesla S75D

Hmm, sure, I read that, but the primary listed OP goal was to cover 20 - 30 mile commute needs and backup was the secondary.

Travel Times on MS cars vs ICE cars

There is no point in sugar coating it, it takes longer in EV on most long-distance trips that require charging vs ICE cars. I would recommend a few things to consider (it may or may not put your mind at ease): - How frequently you take such trips? Statistically, ppl take only a few such trips...

Mini Solar Charger System to just Charge my Tesla S75D

Not positive what the motivation here is... Cost savings? Your commute costs you around $1 - $1.3 in electricity per day. Makes little sense from cost-saving perspective IF system used only going to cover your charging needs. Having PV and PowerWall combo is more about self-powering your...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Tesla claimed it was PG&E slowness with our project, but who really knows... PG&E did simplify the final approval process to some degree, which allowed my project to move forward. I did complain to Tesla though, and they sent me a check (did not ask for it!) for one loan payment of my system...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

I'm also up for CleanPowerSF rebate, but don't even know if I want to ask Tesla the status again on that, as they have been extremely slow to respond on most communications. The sales person (sorry, energy advisor, was super quick...before the sale :)

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Oh, then I'm in the similar boat, I guess... Signed contract early Nov '17.

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Nope... they are not that good at outgoing communications (have to ping them about everything). I was hoping to make step 2, but now dunno, and will be happy to be a part of step 3 at this point... Did get a reply today from "district energy partner" contact about self-referral though, and I did...

    New PV+Powerwall2 setup

Thanks, everyone for your replies! It all makes sense, I just wish Tesla would outline the functionality better during the pre-sales and design process. I'm a "Tesla cool-aid drinker", so it's easier for me to overlook some of the rough edges in the process/with these new products and, at times...
