    Model S Software/Firmware wishlist

Automated motorcycle detection and highlighting in the rear view camera video stream. They are too small to see clearly in the raw video stream. Much as I hate motorcyclists lane splitting in fast moving traffic, the ultimate sanction seems too harsh. Something that Tesla is going to have to...

Amazing Core Tesla Battery IP - 18650 Cell

I had a loose connection on that chiller power supply which prevented it from working. After going up a steep hill I got the "Car shutting down, please pull over safely" message when the battery temperature went too high. Tesla picked up the car (and brought me a loaner on the same truck) and...

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

No, not a tesla employee, but Ive spent a lot of time working with precise opto-mechanical systems, mostly driven by linear motors of various types. When you are dealing with optics, and feedback control systems, mechanical resonances really^n matter.

Model S Technical / Mechanical Issues

The inverter can be pumping hundreds of amps of current into the motor, and that amount of current generates significant magnetic fields and therefore (Lorentz) forces in adjacent current carrying conductors. If any of those conductors is even slightly free to move then its likely they will...

    Lifetime Average Wh/mi

I'm at 284 Wh/m at 9339.9 miles total distance traveled. I have a 60kWhr battery and 19" wheels. Most of the miles are from my daily commute over Hwy 17, about 50miles round trip 450m of elevation gain to the summit, but not much chance to get over 60mph, and usually no need for air conditioning.

    Energy accounting

I have a bunch of data from the car while driving, (about 3 months worth), so I will take a look at it when I get the chance. The nice thing about the vampire drain is that the battery temperature was (presumably) fairly constant during this time (around 25C). When driving the battery...

    Energy accounting

Yup thats correct, just one dataset with the SOC measured every 10 minutes for about 13 days. Its a fairly clean dataset though, since the environment was fairly constant and the rate of drain was also fairly constant

    Energy accounting

My MS60 was sitting in the shop for several weeks waiting repairs, so I plotted up the rated range as a function of battery capacity as the vampires drank the juice. As you can see (if the image upload worked), the rated range definitely goes to zero when the battery reaches 10% capacity...

Same problem here. Taking it over to Freemont tomorrow.

Likelihood of a CHAdeMO adapter for the Model S

It would seem to me that it would be less expensive, and result in less weight to cart around if everyone who wants this capability, got together and purchased an adapter for each charger location. Or maybe persuade Tesla to rent the adapters by the day.

Model S Service Contracts - the poll edition(tm)!

My gen-1 Prius has 182000 miles on it and I'm still only 2/3 of the way through the original brake pads. Can't imagine the S will do any worse. $600 in service fees is way more than I have ever paid. The Prius maintenance is typically less than $400 per year, and could be a lot less if I took it...
