    Supercharger - Cann River, Vic

Interesting that they clearly state on the packaging how to strap the item down. Must really take the guesswork out of transport. Thanks for taking the time to post this excellent random encounter to help slake our thirst for info on this site.

Tesla gen 3 charger - single phase vs 3 phase for Model 3 RWD (2023 model)

Costs the same to run the cable and only a small amount extra to terminate. Cable cost is obviously higher, but 6mm orange circular 5 core is not exactly super expensive unless you are making a really long run (I actually used 10mm but I am known to overengineer things). The other cost that...

Tesla gen 3 charger - single phase vs 3 phase for Model 3 RWD (2023 model)

I discovered something interesting the other day. It appears that the APIs that set charge rate actually allow less than 5A to be set. Using ChargeHQ, I was able to set a charge as low as 1A, which would be around 720W! I actually have my second wall-mounted EVSE (a Jetcharge unit) setup for...

    Charging Adaptors 101

Do you mean a type 2 to type 2 cable? Why would you want one? BYO type 2 chargers are far less common around here than Tesla destination chargers. A few shopping centres maybe? Just drop in for a meal at De Bortoli in Dixon's Creek. Their destination chargers were working last time I checked...

    Service Mode in Australia

Yes, definitely an option, thanks. I was also suggested to just plug a (not necessarily energised) charger into the charge port and that would also stop the car from starting!

    Service Mode in Australia

In a related zone, what about demo mode? This is supposedly accessed by the same "press and hold the logo and then when you let go you get a box and can type 'showroom' in to activate, but I have never managed to get it to work. I show my car at advocacy events a lot, and I would be much more...

    NRMA fast charging network

Exactly! If NRMA will not use Chargefox for billing and their app, then why would anyone else. It sends a very poor message about the future of the Chargefox network. Has Chargefox actually delivered a single fast charging site since they finished the first stage of their network in 2020? I...

    NRMA fast charging network

The thing that you have to ask yourself is why does the NRMA feel the need to create their own network when they already own a share of Chargefox? How dysfunctional must that relationship be for it to have been better for NRMA to set up and run a vary large network with no payment than to just...

    NRMA fast charging network

To add to your note, AMS already had a controlling interest in ChargeFox before the finished buying 100%. If you have no morals then Hydrogen looks to be a great boondoggle. Make extraordinary claims, get money thrown at you and never actually have to deliver anything that works in any way...

    Supercharger - Brisbane (Indooroopilly), Qld

Superchargers and chargers in general in multi-storey carparks are almost always hard to find, even if you have been to them before. The Ikea at Springvale in Melbourne has two sets of AC chargers and there is no signage at all, Broadway in Sydney, Moonee Ponds in Melbourne, all virtually...

Legitimate locations for superchargers in 2022/23

I of course voted for all the really remote places that facilitate long distance travel. The assorted sites in NSW were interesting, I could not really figure out what routes they would open up to be honest? I mean Canberra to Batemans bay is only 148km so what would it do? Berry to Narooma via...

Australian EV sales are poor without Tesla and PHEV

And that hits the nail on the head. With brands like Hyundai and Kia drip feeding fewer than 500 cars every quarter to their entire country-worth of dealers, it is pretty obvious that they are using them to bait and switch people into buying ICE vehicles rather than taking the market seriously...

    Uneven tyre wear

I had this on my M3P and did not address it quickly enough so probably knocked many thousands of kms off the life of my tyres. They still lasted almost 50000km but I had kevlar and steel sticking out the inside edge of all four tyres. It seems that Teslas can end up with significant significant...

    Supercharger - Cann River, Vic

If I go to Lakes Entrance for the PSM meetup on November 4th I may just go a bit further and check at least some of these out. Super excited to be able to do that run without stress or hassle! Of course without Orbost being online, it might be a real struggle for me to get to Cann River and...

'SPACEX' custom number plate available in Victoria

It was never for sale by the original poster. They were just pointing out 6 years ago that no one had them yet on the VicPlates site and that someone should grab them. A quick check of vplates.com.au shows that this is now gone, so either then or since, someone has picked them up.

What is the point of nose in Superchargers where you don't have the room to keep a trailer on? They seem to have them in quite a few places now. Cooma springs to mind for example, while the older chargers never really had nose in options.

Makes a lot of sense to put mega-branding on them to be honest! The best advertisement you could have.

Popularity of Utes in Australia and the prospect of electric versions

This is interesting, I mean most 4WDs will float but they are far from stable in this configuration. I guess with 200kW of batteries in the floor, the CT will be fairly well ballasted. I am also not sure how they will do the door seals unless they have some sort of active multi-point door...
  19. WoodWombat

Popularity of Utes in Australia and the prospect of electric versions

They are all reasonable close in dimensions (the CT was benchmarked against the F-150 for size), but I suspect that the CT will look a bit less stupid from the front and provide significantly better visibility since the bonnet height on a stock Dodge RAM is over 1470mm high. By comparison, a...

    Supercharger - Cann River, Vic

You can just charge at Sale if you are not tracking. Any sort of DC fast charger should allow all Teslas to run the coast road since it is only 163km from Cann River to Bega where you can pick up the NRMA charger or 243km to Narooma where you can pick up the Supercharger. Currently it is a 395km...

Popularity of Utes in Australia and the prospect of electric versions

Huge pickup trucks as daily drivers are bloody stupid, yes, but they have their place as work vehicles. I need a tow vehicle to replace my diesel Prado, something that I can tour off-road and tow many trailers around for example. I did not mistype by the way, I wrote in a double negative snarky...
  22. WoodWombat

Popularity of Utes in Australia and the prospect of electric versions

Tesla are not Stupid. At a bare minimum they will meet all the requirements for the US, where such large pickup trucks are everywhere. There is a reasonable chance that we will get the original full-sized CT, based on our frankly ludicrous appetite for RAM trucks, Silverados and F-trucks...

    Queensland Electric Highway

Rockhampton to Longreach is 687km, assuming a safe range of 350km for a Model 3 without any hypermiling, you need to charge 337km so 4 hours to make that leg. Get up early, drive to Emerald for breakfast and have a long breakfast, then on to Barcaldine or Alpha for a long lunch. Hypermiling...

Victoria Destination Charging Across Victoria Program

Corryong would have been nice on my trip through there on the recent weekend, more for the SR+ Model 3 that was with us than me since it is a fairly difficult run from Wodonga to Jindabyne otherwise. Access to Wilson's Promontory looks to be solved, with Meeniyan only 74km from Tidal River, nice.

    Spare Tyre for Model 3

Does the jack actually fit under the car with the supplied hockey puck and does it struggle to lift the car? I customised a similar jack and the clearance is very low. If you have not done so already, you should try and change a front wheel with the supplied tools it might prompt you to carry a...

    Powering up the Princes Highway

I was in Buchan on Friday having driven from Jindabyne on my way to Sale. Was managing power carefully in my M3P, although possibly did not have to. Being able to chuck a bit of juice in while I was eating at the hotel there would have been a great comfort and would also open the route to SR...

    Ampol AmpCharge network

I have both a 3 phase and single phase fixed charger at my house. Realistically a single phase 32A charger will charge your car over night so it is fast enough. A Model 3 or Y can only take 11kW so 7.7kW single phase is fine. I am hoping the Cybertruck will have 22kW built in charger though...

Gen 3 wall connector and EMF

Not to be that guy again, but you mean 3mm, right? unless you meant 100MHz, although that would then be 3m. I think that you have a bad case of the Fridays and I prescribe a trip down to the pub.

Gen 3 wall connector and EMF

More likely warm from resistive losses than inductive heating though.

Gen 3 wall connector and EMF

That would be 50Hz here in the land down under! Otherwise very true. A nice quarter wave antenna would be about 1500km long. Nice!

    Spare Tyre for Model 3

Oh, one other thing about space saver spares. While they may seem like a good idea, think of your use case. Remote area touring with an 80km/h space saver when you are 5000km from home with no chance of getting a replacement tyre is going to ruin your week. They are usually limited to a few...

    Spare Tyre for Model 3

When I went on my recent Outback trip I obviously wanted to carry a spare for my Model 3 Performance so I might be able to add something to this discussion. I went with a flow-forged ROH RF2 wheel for around $330 and a Winrun R330 in 235/35R20 for about $150 since it was just a spare. This was...

Gen 3 wall connector and EMF

Just to add to what @cafz said, identical low frequency electromagnetic fields will be created no matter how the cable is coiled or not. The coil just concentrates it a bit, but it is no big deal for the typical messy and large coil that you hang on a hook.

    Powering up the Princes Highway

I will be driving past there late September again if we don't get any further update before then. I can't see how Cann River can be ready to go so soon since there were no groundworks when I went past last. Orbost I would believe though.

Why are there so many M3 for sale in Australia. The number on Car Sale has doubled in a week

And that is the thing: the percentage of those Tesla sellers (flippers excluded) who are just going to another Tesla is very high indeed. Actually, there is a good chance that even the flippers are flipping cars to make money to buy a Tesla for themselves.
  36. WoodWombat

Why are there so many M3 for sale in Australia. The number on Car Sale has doubled in a week

About the only thing that is better in the Y is car camping since the hatch and higher roofline make it more comfortable. Not going to give up my M3P for that!

    Charging Adaptors 101

I use this one: Portable Charger 3 Phase (11kW or 22kW) Tails Bundle - EVchargers - EV cables and adaptors Not cheap at all, but if you plan to head off the beaten track, it is a much better deal than the single phase UMC. I have had no problems charging in the Outback from 32A three phase...

    Darwin to Sydney road trip

That is interesting. Actually sounds like there is more "grid" to their grid than northern SA for sure. All their roadhouses, towns and communities seem to have their own generators as soon as you are north of Pimba.

    Darwin to Sydney road trip

I am pretty sure that Mark Tipping did that loop in his Model S P100D on his recent work trip up the east coast, across and then down the middle. He was visiting a lot of remote First Nations communities as well so really got around. I am really looking forwards to vehicles like the Cybertruck...

    Powering up the Princes Highway

I am all for these clusters of EV chargers in small towns to be honest. It helps with overflow for Tesla people or redundancy in case of damage, and will eventually do the same for others once the network opens up. It also shows the superiority of the Supercharger system with multiple stalls...

    Powering up the Princes Highway

Assuming that they are not going to magically complete Bairnsdale before then, this makes it look like they have decided to start including existing infrastructure in their plans to achieve maximum utility. Moe to Cann River is 310km, which is easy enough in an LR or P model Tesla, but...

    Darwin to Sydney road trip

I was staying at Erldunda Roadhouse since I could not get accomodation when I wanted it at Yulara or Kings canyon. Erldunda is at Ghan, on the intersection of the Lassiter Highway and Stuart Highways. This is roughly 200km south of Alice Springs, about 250km from Yulara, 300km from Kings Canyon...

Type 2 Cable ip55 vs ip65 What to buy?

The plug has definitely got a locking cap with a grommet and the cap forms a crude lock (nothing like the superior clipsal setup) but I don't think that when a plug is in the socket it is particularly water resistant. These are the only plugs and sockets of this type that I have, so I don't have...

    NRMA fast charging network

Interesting. You just know that since they are a motoring club they will eventually offer this as a packaged thing to EV OEMs, just like they do with roadside assistance. I guess the names don't suck, which is nice. Anything which helps EV adoption is good in my book.

    Queensland Electric Highway

Another interesting thing that I have noticed after talking to a number of different caravan parks. They have all been happy to have any number of people (e.g. club trip) pulling 15A continuously. That is their electrical setup is appropriately sized for all of these 15A pillars, each with their...

    Ampol AmpCharge network

I quite like the design of these chargers. Many of the Tritium 350kW units (e.g. Euroa) make it impossible to part in the correct spot for a given charger in any Tesla. Instead you end up parked in the adjacent spot. These look long enough to match pretty much any vehicle, whether left or right...

    3 Phase Powerwall

Powerwall 1 was mostly DC Coupled and used special external inverter chargers. Powerwall 2 is AC coupled and the way that he describes it is exactly how my 3 phase setup works so I really think that it is more likely a PW2 here, especially since I don't think that there are many PW1s in...

Type 2 Cable ip55 vs ip65 What to buy?

So I did this last weekend in Canberra as an experiment when I was at the AEVA Conference. For reference I have an aftermarket EVSE with a range of tails, including 15A with an industrial (screw type) three pin plug, which it so happened was very convenient with the Clipsal industrial sockets...

    Darwin to Sydney road trip

Sounds like a fun trip. Hunter Murray and the AEVA have done a lot of work making the NT section viable. I recently did a 6500km round trip to Uluru, Alice Springs and Kings Canyon in a 2019 M3P from Melbourne and it was pretty uneventful. How many kms per day do you expect to do on the AC...

    Powering up the Princes Highway

That is a worry. As far as I have seen from the planning, all of the chargers are coming to Ward St. Technically the charging spots will be dedicated, so hopefully this will prevent ICEing. Tesla chargers will likely be in a dedicated lot, as usual, so less likely to be affected as well. That...
