    DIY PPF

I got a clear 3M Pro PPF via eBay to wrap my front bumper. Whew, it was hard. I prepared as best I could by watching videos, and had already had some practice with rear bumper PPF I've done in the past. I am patient, and have a good eye for detail. But wrapping a car is much harder than it...

Is it possible to drift a Tesla Model 3 on a track better than a 350z?

Bad phrasing on my part, obviously the power from the front motor can't magically transfer to the rear motor. However, I didn't realize your selection was overridden when the wheels were straight.

Is it possible to drift a Tesla Model 3 on a track better than a 350z?

If you have a Performance Model 3, you can put 95% of the power to the rear, so drifting should be quite easy/fun. Especially considering it has more power than a 350Z.

Going to rent a Model 3 before delivery

Each of those things take getting used to, in any new car. If you’re used to driving a 2002 Camry, a 2023 BMW 5-series will feel uncomfortably stiff and awkward to sit in. Now if you truly can’t make an objective decision about if a 5-series or E-class is a better fit without spending time in...

Going to rent a Model 3 before delivery

Agreed, it's probably recommended. However, it really just depends on your personality. I consider myself educated, adaptable, and ready for technology. Others are more traditional, resistive to change, and just have a natural tendency for slower adoption to new tech. The "logic" of not...

2023 Model 3 without USS and proximity functionality [park assist / summon not available]

As @MP3Mike says, the $350 isn't even a bad value because now the used prices creep closer to $250. The only bad part about having Tesla install it, they put it behind the front bump cover, instead of underneath the frunk tray. Which means it's a PITA if you ever want to remove it later...

2023 Model 3 without USS and proximity functionality [park assist / summon not available]

I pulled it out of my previous '20 Model 3, and installed it myself in my new car. It was originally installed 3 years ago by Tesla mobile service for $350.

Going to rent a Model 3 before delivery

Not really a good analogy. Most of the awkwardness of a new car is just getting used to where buttons (or lack thereof!) are. It's still a car with pedals and a steering wheel, after all. And it's not like going from a Mini Cooper to a 4x4 Ford dually F350. A mid-size four door sedan drives and...

2023 Model 3 without USS and proximity functionality [park assist / summon not available]

I have a 2023 and took apart the front to install my HomeLink. There was nothing connected to the radar wiring harness. And I don’t expect radar to come back to Teslas. And if it did, it wouldn’t be for parking.

Questions About Equipment on Model 3 Performance - Conflicting Info Found

3 Performance keeps the same rear caliper it always has had. I had both a 12/19 and 11/22 build.
  11. T

    Is the 2020 M3P lower than the 21-23 M3P?

Per Tesla's original product descriptions, yes the 2018-2021(?) Performance should be lower. However, I've owned the '20 and the '23, and they look the same height to me.

Need easy cheap bolt on 18in wheel for m3p with red brembos

I have the same car/wheels, but went with the 19x8.5 OEM Sport V2 wheels. Very happy! I get that 9" looks better, but you have more options at 8.5". My entire set with new tires + TMPS was $1500. Uberturbines bagged up for some other time.

2023 Model 3 without USS and proximity functionality [park assist / summon not available]

There is no confirmation of radar coming for Tesla cars. Just wait for the Tesla Vision software update.
  14. T

    Updated design?

The 3 already got a refresh for 2021/22. New interior, heat pump, MCU, etc.
  15. T

    Updated design?

After 2+ years, the Model 3 and Y now have identical headlights and taillights. Don't expect them to diverge, after all this time and efforts.
  16. T

Are all Model Y orders placed for the 279mi range variant built in Austin with 4680 and structural battery pack?

Ahh.. for a long time, they would only offer the 4680s with the 20" wheels. I'm not in the market... I got my '23 Model 3 Performance at the end of December. :)

Ordered an M3P, any thoughts on planned upgrades

I am now on my second Model 3 Performance. IMO, the first 'performance' upgrade you can make is smaller/lighter wheels. I recently went from the stock 20" Uberturbines to the 19" Sport V2 wheels. Much more comfortable ride, at least 5% better mileage. Handling feels good!

Model 3 Performance Waiting Room [2020-2023]

Yeah it's tape-mounted. A heat gun and some gentle pulling and you'll be just fine.

Surge Protection - at the Wall Charger & the Tesla Itself?

Right. Some little baby MOVs in most of those.
  20. T

Surge Protection - at the Wall Charger & the Tesla Itself?

When you say "Home Depot surge protector", you mean the Eaton box I linked? Because most people who pick up a $15 8-outlet 'surge protector' at Home Depot are actually buying taps, which do nothing but add more outlets to your socket. False sense of security, in my experience.

Chrome Add Thread for 2021 M3

Funny. I went from a '20 Model 3 Performance with chrome, to a '23 version (red) without, and was excited to go the 'stealth mode' without the chrome. The chrome trim does make a big impact on the lines/looks of the car. But not the look I prefer :)
  22. T

Woo Hoo!!! Just ordered my first Tesla!!!

Cool! I had a '20 M3P. That year/model was the only one to have the 20" wheels in gunpowder color. So if you spot another Performance model with those wheels, it's a '20.
  23. T

Surge Protection - at the Wall Charger & the Tesla Itself?

The right way is to install a surge protector at the panel: Eaton Whole House Surge Protector CHSPT2ULTRA-1 - The Home Depot The Tesla can handle voltage drops just fine.
  24. T

Are all Model Y orders placed for the 279mi range variant built in Austin with 4680 and structural battery pack?

Yes, that is my understanding. All of these should show a 269 (not 279) range.

Is the Tesla Model 3 Performance actually better than the Tesla Model S Plaid?

Nice to read you're enjoying it. I'm sure you get more looks in your 911. But you can't beat a M3P for hauling people and cargo, yet still keeping pace with a 'proper' sports car. Add in the fact that you only need to change the windshield wipers and cabin air filter (brake pads will likely...

Model 3 Performance Waiting Room [2020-2023]

So many new M3P owners, awesome! For those long-time thread participants, does this feel like the most new owners we've had in a short period, ever?

2023 Model 3 without USS and proximity functionality [park assist / summon not available]

There is still sound. I have a '23 M3 with no USS Yesterday, I was merging and another car behind me was also merging, and we were close enough to collision that the car made a single beep, along with a 'red car' warning on the screen.
  29. T

Is the Tesla Model 3 Performance actually better than the Tesla Model S Plaid?

I've never driven a Plaid, but I did spend about 30 min driving a refreshed '22 Model S. It did feel very fast, and gave me a perspective on size and handling. I'm on my second M3P, and would have seriously thought about going to a Plaid (instead of my second M3P) if the Model S was a bit more...

Steering wheel scroll wheels get really hot?

How can you tell that yours are plastic? I had a '20 M3, and the scroll wheels were black and definitely plastic. On my 11/22 build '23 M3, they are a dark gray color but feel more like plastic to me.

How long can I expect a model 3 to last?

I actually do want to keep my new Model 3 for five years :p I think I say that every time I get a new car. My '20 was actually pretty good. But I got too tempted by the late Dec '22 offer. My wife drives my former car - 2018 BMW X3 40i. Of course it's paid for and in relatively good shape. In...

How long can I expect a model 3 to last?

Where's the fun in that? Life is short. I realize some people consider their cars as an appliance. The same way I keep my toaster for 10+ years or until it breaks. But my car is my daily fun. Love the way it drives, looks and regularly get compliments and questions.

Used market has really taken a hit [All discussion of Model 3 Resale value]

I traded in my '20 M3P to Tesla in late December for $38K. At that time, Carmax offered me $34K and told me their offer would be trash because they send all 3/S/X straight to the auctions, only Y's go on their retail lot. I knew then that the oversupply problem had started, and hit warp-speed...

    New tires at 21,000 miles

Still missing my point. BMW X5 chews through tires, too. You want something that goes 50K miles on a set of tires, you need to look for a different vehicle type.

    New tires at 21,000 miles

    He has a Model X.
  36. T

    New tires at 21,000 miles

Fundamental design flaws? You have a crazy heavy vehicle with insane torque. It's the opposite of a Honda Civic. Expect the opposite kind of tire wear.

Hankook new iON tire, an "EV" tire (not the same as Kinergy GT)

Nice. I'm in Texas, so I'm not sure if those (as all seasons) would be the best choice for me. I will never drive in snow/ice, and have been leaning towards the Hankook Ventus S1 EVO3 for my Model 3 AWD with 19" wheels. Those are the only Tesla OEM (I prefer the Tesla specs like acoustic...

2023 Model 3 without USS and proximity functionality [park assist / summon not available]

All TBD of course. Buy in my 2020 M3, I got all kinds of false alarms via slopes when backing up in my alley, etc. where collision is literally impossible.
  39. T

2023 Model 3 without USS and proximity functionality [park assist / summon not available]

I don't see how any of these situations are different from the false-alarm behavior that is common with the USS on Teslas and other comparable vehicles.

Used market has really taken a hit [All discussion of Model 3 Resale value]

It’s a combination. Yes price reductions were big, but also improved availability of new-build Teslas, and other new cars in general.

Questions About Equipment on Model 3 Performance - Conflicting Info Found

For sure your new car won't have Homelink built in. They only include it with the model S/X these days. But $350 is a reasonable price, considering the model itself usually runs ~$200 on the used market.
  42. T

Anybody come from a sports car to Tesla?

Does a 2016 BMW F80 M3 count? About the same size, similar price. If so, then I'm 110% happy with the change. So much, I'm on my second Model 3 Performance. I like to upgrade every 3-4 years :) Never going to back to ICE. I love the acceleration, the tech and the every day usability of a...

Questions About Equipment on Model 3 Performance - Conflicting Info Found

I picked up a brand new M3P on 12/30/22. See above: Also, your existing frunk liner and front passenger floor mats will not fit exactly. Reuters: "Tesla readies revamped Model 3 with project 'Highland' -sources" [projected 3rd quarter 2023]

New casting for the 3 will certainly come, but it could be years? Tesla is super-focused on Cybertruck right now, and certainly the spies/drones would be giving us at least a year of heads up when something that giant starts to impact the production line(s).
  46. T

Reuters: "Tesla readies revamped Model 3 with project 'Highland' -sources" [projected 3rd quarter 2023]

I wouldn't get your hopes up for a major revision of the Model 3 in the next year. Ever since the Y was released in early '20, Tesla has been working to get the 3/Y at 'feature parity'. They've finally achieved that (heat pump, lights, interior, etc.) It took 3 years to get them virtually...

Pic of your Model 3.......RIGHT NOW! [model 3 pictures thread]

Although not the same angle, you can see my '20 (blue) vs. '23 M3P here. Suspension height looks and feels identical to me.
