Wheel alignment for S 85 RWD

You were fortunate to grab @zwede to respond to your thread. If you have any other alignment questions, he may just respond, and with clarity since he is one of the very few “hands on” owners on this forum that can speak from experience as nearly all others around here are owner/regurgitate/TMC...

Temporary charging solutions before a wall charger install

Yup yup. I missed that a bonehead ran 10-3 +ground to a 6-50 (welding) receptacle.

Temporary charging solutions before a wall charger install

I would switch out the 30a welder breaker for a 2-pole 20a and replace the the 6-50 receptacle with a commercial grade 6-20. This will provide ~15 mph charge rate and won’t require any manual reduction of charge rate in case you or the M3 forgets its geo-fenced reduced charge setting at that...

Ride height and tire wear /energy usage

Your welcome. I would enjoy owning a P85+ over my P85 since you have the more robust Gen II rear suspension that tracks superior than the previous S cars especially under high acceleration loading. It is so darn good, it became the standard in all S cars. I am such a low tech old school...

Just had a Tesla charger installed. Charges are going at 12 amp at 246 volt?

The Gen II MC plugged into a 14-50 using 8ga NM-B with a 2-pole 40 should be to code in most areas and is not dangerous in any way. Gosh, i thought a HPWC and WC are required to be hardwired instead of a kludged oven pigtail jury rig. I wonder what folks do with the extraneous neutral conductor...

Ride height and tire wear /energy usage

Yes, me (6+ year P85 gearhead most modded suspension owner). RWD S cars were a hot mess WRT to excessive camber and L to R spread. Without getting into the various suspension mods (both front and rear) I performed along with other strategies to double or triple the service life (I am on my...

Waiting a month for parts: Suggestions?

Sorry to read your thread. Not all Tesla employees are the same. Not all Rangers are the same. Not all service centers are the same. Not all body shops are the same. Not all Tesla certified body shops are the same as well. Always shop around before you intrust someone to work on your ICE car...

Just had a Tesla charger installed. Charges are going at 12 amp at 246 volt?

I can’t disagree, however, I love my receptacle charging 14-30 (~80,000 miles), and now my 6-20s that charges both the S and M3 using a Gen II WC. The HPWCs were for PlugShare users (back when “supers” were rare), and are now mostly for old timers with 72 and 80 amp capability guests along with...

Just had a Tesla charger installed. Charges are going at 12 amp at 246 volt?

Unless I needed the extra 8 amps, I would have just switched to a Gen II MC which would keep you safe and and kept my Gen I UMC in the trunk for road trips. So glad you caught the mistake before a serious calamity ensued!

Just had a Tesla charger installed. Charges are going at 12 amp at 246 volt?

Yikes, if you are correct (and I have no reason to doubt you) it appears that I have mismatched components for over 6 years running, and I will once again with tomorrow’s install even though I have passed inspections. After being satisfied with reasonable temps at all connection points (even...

Just had a Tesla charger installed. Charges are going at 12 amp at 246 volt?

Not a google jockey like all of the folks over at the M3 forum electrical threads. But I will admit I looked at my trusty ampacity chart in my toolbox and #4 THHN is showing 95A, which is the same as the XHHW-2 cable I deploy on some of my Gen I HPWCs with dips set at 72a charging on a 2-pole...

Just had a Tesla charger installed. Charges are going at 12 amp at 246 volt?

So very few electromagicians install the entire circuit correctly as they often miss the 125% continuous rule, don’t pull the proper wire/cable gauge, jam an incorrect (some are interchangeable) manufactures 2-pole breaker onto the buss bar because that is all that is in the storage bin inside...

    Rear alignment

Yes, have the toe checked. Also, I torque my RR ULs with the suspension fully loaded so as not to incur any rotational bias on both the inboard and outboard bushings thus removing premature wear since I have original (6+ year old) bushing design.

Semi Owner needs help sizing electric motor

Gosh, do you grab 4 rear M3 motors from an auto recycler and duplicate the 5 -10 year delayed (since amazing Jerome was yanked away to fix the M3 assembly line from imploding) Tesla semi layout with 1/wheel. Mr. Twitter claims (lol) the motors will rock for a 1M mile service life.

How to Calculate if Safe to Charge at 48 amps?

Opps, I forgot to mention that since I keep my cars forever and due to the expense of the traction packs in the S and M3, I insulated the garage and installed a Mitsubishi mini-split to keep temps more accommodating for the girls during the hot summer months.
  16. L

How to Calculate if Safe to Charge at 48 amps?

I would charge at a lower amperage during the cooler nighttime temps to reduce the load on the battery cooling system.

Destroyed Wheel bun Pothole. Need Advice

I strongly reccomend going with the 18s since the taller sidewall will factually absorb the most road hazards.

Destroyed Wheel bun Pothole. Need Advice

I wonder if any M3 owners have switched over a 225/50-18 or a 215/55-18 to obtain a taller than OEM sidewall ? If I ever moved back to Taxachusetts (but I won’t), I would probably deploy a tire like I previously mentioned as my go to winter driving set to drive up to Loon or Sunday River.

Destroyed Wheel bun Pothole. Need Advice

I am a fan of @Tsportline. I purchased one of their first sets of gray turbine 20's for the S (after hounding them at the '14 Teslive event to manufacture 20s:)). The manufacture/model specific wheels they offer require no centering rings, utilize OEM lug nuts, and accept center caps for an...

Destroyed Wheel bun Pothole. Need Advice

Not a smarty tech person here. I am just a very old gear head who has been around cars nearly all my life. The 21s on the S and the 20 M3 wheel/tire option are not a high performance set-up. They are extremely damage prone, alignment sensitive, revenue generating, road side stranding...

    HPWC on 12/2 Romex

Even though Veronica can gulp a full 80a and I have (3) HPWCs, I charge her and the LR RWD M3 using a Gen II MC with 6-20 adapters 99% of the time. The HPWCs are mostly for guests. I really dislike pulling and working with unruly 3 and 4ga. cable when a 30/24a 10ga. or a 20/16a 12ga. will...

    Suspension Questions

Road racers will tell you that a staggard set-up is better suited on RWD cars and a square set-up is better suited on AWD cars for balanced handling.

Sorry that I don’t remember all of the details of the various donut spare packages I put together back in '13 which used both 18 and 19” diameter wheels that deployed a steel Bimmer wheel, an alum Bimmer wheel, and a Bently aluminum wheel. I then secured the tires from other cars and the tire...

Extension cord for charging at 110V?

Agreed, yes, the Gen I UMC 5-20 and the Gen II MC 5-20 are terrific versatile adapters. I believe that everyone should at least carry a 5-20, 10-30, and a 14-30 adapter along with the amazon adapter as well. For general safety practices, might we be able to refrain from discussing modding a...

Extension cord for charging at 110V?

Usually, I agree with Tex, however, if you are like me that keeps their equipment and cars in top condition forever, you are not necessarily “overthinking this”. If you flip cars every 4 years, it really won’t make much of a difference. I don’t really abide by the Telsa manual WRT daily...

(Possible) Fitment issues stepping down TO 19" FROM 21" OEM wheels

Teslas factory 19s are ,5” narrower than their (non-staggard) 21s to provide the necessary inboard clearance since the strut slightly angles outboard as you move from the top towards the spindle. I don’t want to get get bogged down in a protracted discussion with others whether you should or...

dd You are very wise to immediately chuck the damage prone, expensive, heavy, inefficient, costly, alignment sensitive, low performance (20s = real performance), rubber band sidewall, pot hole stranding, Tesla revenue generating, gorgeous, 21 *fail* option. I can attest to all the above with...

Extension cord for charging at 110V?

Yes, 12 is the smallest I deploy. Personally, I will gladly use a longer extension cord to reach a known dedicated receptacle. Those of us dinosaurs had to charge by any means necessary back in the day before supers and destination hosts. Don’t use extension cords for EV charging.

Extension cord for charging at 110V?

Such good advice given already. I experimented with extension cord charging up to 300' six years ago, and often send 240v thru the above mentioned extension cords (that’s a topic for another day).
