Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” [range] projections

No, you are mistaken. The 48 mph average is not across city+highway. Here is a link to the EXACT profile of JUST the EPA highway test: Emission Test Cycles: EPA Highway Fuel Economy Test Cycle It's a bit more than 10 miles long, averages 48 MPH, and momentarily touches a top speed of 60 MPH...

Try this, when your battery doesn't have enough to reach the Supercharger

Would you try and drive a gasoline car down to the last few ounces of fuel and just hope that you'd make it to the next gas station?

Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” [range] projections

The need for all these fudge-factors which inevitably distort reality depending on the details of the cars design GO AWAY if you just make a highway test that involves driving 65 mph. Here are the two options: 1). Test all cars with a wildly unrealistic highway pattern that averages 48 MPH and...

Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” [range] projections

The whole outrage over "EPA range" would be fixed if the EPA made realistic tests. They use an average of 48 MPH for the "highway" number. Yes. Really.

How soon will BYD be the largest BEV manufacturer in the world?

Tesla is shipping record setting electric car volumes every week. BYD is fine - a worthy competitor. They are getting up near Tesla levels on electric cars (and doing fake hype by counting ALL cars they make in the headline totals instead of just their pure-electrics). Tesla's mission was to...

How soon will BYD be the largest BEV manufacturer in the world?

I agree inside the article there are -accurate- numbers for BEV production that are not meaningfully higher than what Tesla has been doing all year, and which don't match the article's title line that purposely gives the wrong impression. For reference, Tesla Q2 rate was around 140k per month

How soon will BYD be the largest BEV manufacturer in the world?

BYD again mixing hybrids with full electric car counts

What's your Wh/mi and how do you do it? Any tips?

Highway speed, ambient temperature, tire size and inflation, one pedal driving... in roughly that order

Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” [range] projections

I think this is a good point. Teslas are getting their range from being super efficient. Many competing cars just use a bigger battery pack. Using the two cars in an inefficient way (high speeds, heavy use of AC, etc) will have a greater impact on the Tesla.

Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” [range] projections

Yeah the EPA process is decades out of date, focused almost purely on gasoline engine performance with an unrealistic fixed pattern of simulated speeds and loads and then some math to approximate wind resistance. It was fine in... the 1950's. But since it's a "standard" upon which lots of...

Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” [range] projections

Cars are designed differently and have different optimal operating conditions. As I explained above, an easy example is that the Germans tended to add a transmission to optimize the top end efficiency (at the cost of complexity, weight, and cost). Doing so did not improve their EPA number at...

Large Drive Unit issue in Model S. Is this unit also used in Model Y?

I'll defer to the experts, but I believe the Model S/X motors are different than those on the 3/Y in most cases. They do share some common componentry such as inverters and whatnot, but the front MYLR motor is smaller and pure-induction design, while the rear is a permanent-magnet type. I...

Tesla rigged the dashboard readouts in its electric cars to provide “rosy” [range] projections

The EPA range test is completely defined by the EPA and is unfortunately highly unrealistic for highway conditions since it uses an average speed of only 48 mph. Teslas happen to be crazy efficient at that pace - you'll easily pass the EPA range if you drive under 60 MPH on the highway. Real...

    Chevy Bolt gets the ax

I would also expect that the design/product team might not be perfectly in alignment with the production team. The traditional makers have "ideas" for cars, some of which look promising. They do NOT have the ability or experience to produce them in volume, maybe a few Korean and China makers aside
  15. ZenRockGarden

How soon will BYD be the largest BEV manufacturer in the world?

Which is fine since just about everyone else are losing money on making electric cars, with a few like BYD maybe approaching break-even (again, on making electric cars - no fair bringing in your hybrids, washing machines, etc)

You all have about talked me out of a Tesla altogether...

Add up all our minor annoyances about our Teslas and they are utterly DWARFED by having the support of the Tesla Supercharging Network. Game, Set, Match. There is no other option unless you never travel outside your home city.

    More powerful regen

It's not completely maxed out on regen, but it's near the limit as can be seen when regen actually gets limited if the battery is nearly-full and/or cold.

Bought a 40.5k miles 2020 Model 3 with significant Battery degradation. What can I do?

He literally gave you a decent estimate. It's mostly just calendar aging which is in this ballpark: 5% after one year 7% after two years 8.7% after three years 10% after four years 11.2% after five years 12.2% after six years 13.2% after seven years 14.1% after eight years.

Bought a 40.5k miles 2020 Model 3 with significant Battery degradation. What can I do?

I think we agree. Note that the above chart would need to be adjusted for the number of cycles since it takes twice as many shallow-cycles to go the same distance as a twice as deep cycle. This is where I think you quickly find a wash. For example I think the 4.5 line at 500 cycles is just...

Bought a 40.5k miles 2020 Model 3 with significant Battery degradation. What can I do?

I think this is a slight over-generalization. What bothers the battery is sitting at higher states of charge with the 60% region being particularly important if you look at the available charts on loss-over-time vs SOC. I doubt there's much difference in charging 2x from 20% to 30% vs one time...

Bought a 40.5k miles 2020 Model 3 with significant Battery degradation. What can I do?

Yeah, I regularly get 250 wh/mi on a Model Y, which is inherently bigger and less efficient... wheels/tires/pressure are a big factor as is driving style. High highway speeds eat watt-hours
  22. ZenRockGarden

    More powerful regen

While I agree it might be nice to let users select between mild/medium/strong regen (and back in the day I think Tesla offered mild/medium option), I find the regen on my MYLR to be delightfully right. I drive for days without touching the brakes. Perhaps if I lived in a busy city with a lot...

How soon will BYD be the largest BEV manufacturer in the world?

Given Ford lost like $40k on each and every electric car it made... I think they'd find +10% margins drool worthy
  25. ZenRockGarden

Is it me, or is the Model Y really ugly?

It's not really trying to be pretty - it's about aero efficiency and utility. But yeah, it can look a bit like whale-on-the-road. There are folks who make some body kits - mostly front and rear clips. Some people black out the greenhouse portion of the car for a different look. But not a lot...

What was the Tesla's advertised range for a 2020 Model T Perf when new?

Yeah, so 3 years ago the LR packs were in the region of 290 to 316 miles, depending mostly on what wheels you used (MYP has the least efficient large wheel/tire setup). Since then, the newer MYLR's have gained about 8% efficiency in the battery pack and various other aspects of the car, so...

How soon will BYD be the largest BEV manufacturer in the world?

I see some very hard times ahead for Ford as they transition away from long-profitable things like gas trucks, and try to replace them with electrics that they're not really very good at making yet. They may get there, but it's at least gonna be painful as the profitable-stuff declines and the...

How soon will BYD be the largest BEV manufacturer in the world?

I agree to some extent. The level of mindlessly-copying what Tesla did (right down to the minimalist interior with a big touch screen in the middle, to say nothing of mega-castings in manufacturing) is amusing. But I don't think the traditional makers will see quite the margins that Tesla...

    Cadillac Escalade electric: Tesla Killer!

Yeah, you're basically buying two full Model X battery packs, plus the frame, chasis, brakes, etc to carry all that weight. It will be incredibly heavy, require either hours to charge or a private powerplant-level charger to fill it, and of course you'll have to PAY for all that metal and...
  32. ZenRockGarden

How soon will BYD be the largest BEV manufacturer in the world?

Actually every manufacturer except Tesla has a profit-margin problem. Ford lost tens of thousands of dollars on every EV it made. I'm not sure BYD is at break-even despite having the largest economy of scale short of Tesla. Everyone else is pouring cash into getting market share.

Reuters: "Tesla readies revamped Model 3 with project 'Highland' -sources" [projected 3rd quarter 2023]

I'd have to agree. Tesla made the luxury-class S and X because that was needed for price and scale reasons at the time. Their attention is now to reduce prices further, offer a truck to those who don't want a car at all, and to hopefully make a compact cheap car for the masses.

Placing a reservation on hold and rejecting a VIN

I don't know what's complicated here. You order a car from Tesla. When it's ready, they tell you to come and get it. If you are somehow unable to get the car you can place your order on hold one time, or if you go look at the car and somehow it's not acceptable you can reject it. If you do...

Reuters: "Tesla readies revamped Model 3 with project 'Highland' -sources" [projected 3rd quarter 2023]

Tesla obsesses over streamlining production and parts. I'm not saying it makes sense, I'm just describing it. Having two different headlight designs, 2 types of steering-wheels/stalks/controls, 2 kinds of seats, etc etc bugs them. They want it all one thing wherever possible on the high...
