    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

I got to see my inventory Model S before they detailed it (it had to be trucked from Sydney up to Brisbane) and before I paid up. There were a couple of issues which they pointed out to me quite happily. All bar one (a tiny ding behind the rear door) were polished out. I was very happy with both...

    Model 3 Charging in Australia

Tricky, you would have to get the presumably proprietary plug that goes into the UMC end. Otherwise it's straightforward, the only electronics is a resistor to set the charge current. Then you could make a one-piece solution. I wouldn't mind making a 15A wall plug tail if I could get that plug...

    Model 3 Charging in Australia

You can wire up the tails yourself (or get a sparky to do it if not confident, but it's very simple) There are posts on this site that tell you what you need - there is a little light bedtime reading here: Mobile charging for Australia, and this: https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/posts/1168640 is...

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

If enough Tasmanians drive Teslas, they'll put in a service centre. (What do you do now for service, Chuq?)

Yes they're not saying if they will use the existing locations where their AC chargers are. No info yet.

Currently showing one at Toombul and another at Springfield.

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

People are always surprised when the car starts moving silently just after the door shuts. The doors shutting is the loudest thing about it :-)

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

Likewise - in Brisbane too. Nobody needs to worry about heat through the glass roof.

    ChargeFox EV charging Network

What plugs do the ultra-fast ones offer? Chademo and CCS physically the same as the 50kW ones, or something different? And if they do Chademo, are they limited to 50kW or do they go higher?

Purchased. Thanks for uncovering that one..

Wireless phone charger for my model S

They don't ship to Aust - how did you get it?

Wireless phone charger for my model S

Yes it does but I'd like the special one with the right length and 90-degree plugs that fits inside the console :-)

Wireless phone charger for my model S

While on the subject of phone charging, does anyone know of a USB-C cable that will drop in place of the iPhone one that comes with the Model S? I've read that Model 3 comes with one, but not having any luck sourcing one that will ship to Oz (and at a reasonable price)

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

If you're talking about the UMC, it's limited to 15A, even with a 3-phase tail - but if you have 3-phase power it is faster than single phase. The only way to get more than 15A into the car at home is to use the HPWC, or a (very) expensive EVSE that takes the place of the (free) UMC. The HPWC...

I believe so, but I haven't tried it.

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

If the M3's are all on CCS plugs they can't use the existing supercharger stalls, but they can use Tritiums (Chargefox/NRMA/QldHwy/whatever). That might give Tesla some breathing space in which to build out CCS superchargers. But the cars will all have to come with CCS HPWC's to put in at home...

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

I daresay a few have bailed out to buy a Model S/X. People in the line when the 3 went on show here in Bris were saying they might, due in some part to the small boot (including me)

Used to AWD from Audi quattro experience. Tesla fits right in.

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

The obvious thing at least to my naive mind for Tesla to do, is to sell a SW locked car for under the LCT threshold, you buy it, and then pay a bit more to unlock the features, thus avoiding the LCT. But I bet there are clauses in the legislation that prevents a new car seller from doing this...

HPWC wiring question: switch between off-peak and retail power?

Yeah I considered using tariff 33 (the one that's on for 18 hours+) but (a) I already had an unused meter for the cheaper one, and (b) the saving over retail was nowhere near as great. As things stand I get 8 hours of charge which gives me 160-170km of range, easily covering most days of use.

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

That's too long (for me to wait, of course!) and assumes they will go through the production hell phase before building any RHD cars. That's not so likely with the Y (IMHO) as it uses a lot of stuff in common with the 3, and the new factories will be on stream too. I'd say late 2020 or early 21...

HPWC wiring question: switch between off-peak and retail power?

Just using the meters that existed in my house, as it's expensive to switch to new ones for TOU or whatever. There are two meters, one for Tariff 11 (retail) the other for tariff 31 (off-peak, enabled for 8 hours/day). The off-peak meter wan't being used any more for hot water, as I had solar...

HPWC wiring question: switch between off-peak and retail power?

This is probably a question for any sparkies out there. When I was getting my WC installed, I asked whether I could have a contactor that switched it over to off-peak power when off-peak was running, but left it on the retail meter when it was not. I was told that was illegal, and the only way...

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

The tiny boot is what put me off too... in that regard, the Y looks like what the 3 should have been in the first place. Hopefully they make RHD Y's from the beginning and get them to Oz. I'd like one as my second car...

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

Retrospective discounts are irrelevant atm, because there are no retrospective purchases - nobody has purchased a M3 in Aust yet. Whether any policy changes become effective before/after the M3 release, is another imponderable.

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

From the first car's point of view, the second car is just providing the wall. That's assuming the cars are the same mass and travelling the same speed.

I took mine in to the Brisbane SC for the Takata airbag recall (free). While there, they checked battery packs, coolants and tyre pressures, and washed the car. All free.

    Tesla Model 3 in Australia

There will still be city Tesla centres and you will still be able to test drive at least an S. If you are kindly disposed towards the 3 (and why else would you be test driving?) then it will be similar enough. I drove a P100D before settling on my secondhand car - there's a bit of difference...

From a WHO report I read recently (stumbled upon) on how to deal with anti-vaxxers: stay calm, stick to the facts. Best approach for their kindred folks in climate denial, creationism, flat-earth, etc. But I think we can make exception for flat-earthers, especially when they pull out their...

Current rates of atmospheric CO2 increase are not “natural”

Al Gore, and most climate-knowledgable scientists since, have been certainly wrong, but not in the way denialists and trolls insist. Indeed they have been over-cautious, as we are only now beginning to find out as the models become more sophisticated and take more feedback mechanisms into...

Current rates of atmospheric CO2 increase are not “natural”

I didn't mention the storage aspect of renewables, because they need to be considered as a whole system. Pumped hydro and batteries are proven just like the generation technology is. And solar thermal has an inherent storage built into it. All of these problems are well understood and have...
  42. aegidius

Current rates of atmospheric CO2 increase are not “natural”

Even if all risks can be adequately mitigated (another story) renewables win hands down over nuclear, for upfront cost and scalability. Same for new coal power stations. That's why few banks will touch them now. Wave and tidal power do seem attractive on paper, but nobody has been able to make...

    AU Pricing

    AU Pricing

Not going to make anyone feel better I'll grant, but from the outside looking in (to the P market anyway) it just seems that the P-models were overpriced, and they weren't selling enough of them. Considering the difference is a bit bigger motor and that's about it.

My 3rd door handle failure in 2 years

I passed on the 3 when I saw one in the flesh, for that very reason (the boot was too small and my present car had a good one that I was used to). The S boot is better again. And it was available now :-)
